It's not going to be an easy choice, for sure. When I first posted that I would pick 3-4 people I was honestly leaning towards 3 but I think I'm definitely going to end up doing 4 (it'll be hard enough to get it down to that point without dropping another one).
Guess it's time to resort to bribery, blackmail, and other unsavory acts to clinch a spot ;p.

Sadly I don't have time to run two tables, although if another GM wants to run a second table with some of the people I don't have room for that would be just fine with me. The last unique RotRL game I recruited got so many great applications that two other GMs stepped up and we built three full tables!

That is pretty darn impressive.

I have a question, actually, a somewhat important one. Is the fact that my submission is a barebones preliminary rather than a full sheet going to count against me? See, I like to be thorough about my character sheets, with everything nicely and neatly organized--and I'm always finding ways to fine-tune that too--and reference links to the most appropriate site (typically d20pfsrd) everywhere.
But! I type all of that out--indeed, I do all my PbP playing as well--on a tablet. Which is not the best for shifting through multiple tabs to copy/paste links or type things out in a speedy manner on that frustrating on-screen keyboard. And the fact that paizo's own site likes to periodically f*+& with me by erasing my work when I hit "preview" or "submit" to get my most recent work loaded, that doesn't help either. So, this time around, I decided to be a little slack and save myself a great deal of work that might end up wasted, by submitting what I did and saving the full sheet in all its OCD glory for actually getting picked.
@Everyone else: I haven't decided whether or not to go wyrm singer with this skald. So the deciding factor for me--and this might be moot if I don't get in, but I'll ask anyway--is whether anyone is planning on going Dex-to-damage or ranged with their build? Because the standard skald raging song won't help much for that, but the wyrm singer version would.

Sam, just throwing this out there, but there's also the Spell Warrior archetype. If selected I might use that instead of Fated Champion on Axel Hagerson depending on what the party looks like (i.e. if inspired rage looks like it won't be useful). It might be something you want to consider too.

I have considered that actually, and the weapon song looks really nice. And the way the various counterspelling abilities are written, I can still trade the bonus feat for Aspect of the Beast (claws) and not suffer unduly for lacking Improved Counterspell.
The problems, however, with counterspelling as a skald kill it for me. One fight against multiple casters can easily burn out a day's allotment of spell slots and raging song rounds--and if you're not encountering casters regularly, then why bother, right?--and then the party is screwed if there are any follow-up encounters. The counterspelling is, as best I can see, utterly worthless against spells of 7th or greater level, since the skald caps out 6th, and can't counterspell higher-level spells with what the archetype offers. So againt a high-level caster with some serious mojo to use, the bulk of that archetype sits unused until the enemy starts popping off spells in right level range. (Don't know why the archetype doesn't get the option to counter spells by burning off multiple lower level spell slots, at a 2/1 or even 3/1 ratio.)
And finally, it requires a somewhat different feat build than what I have in mind, enough so that it would be a new character entirely. So, and tempting though weapon song is, that archetype isn't a good fit for me.

I'm ok with a certain amount of shifting around your characters after selections are made, as long as the core concept is pretty much the same (that, along with clarifying your shared backgrounds/dynamics, is why I said gameplay would probably open by the end of next week). In fact, I usually give players one last chance to make minor adjustments when you hit 2nd level and have had some time to see how everyone works together.
@Everyone: I just discovered/remembered something I should have pointed out earlier... I use fractional bonuses for multiclassing. That means that multiclassing between 3/4 or 1/2 BAB classes won't hurt your total BAB as much, but it also means that dipping monk or something isnt going to help your saves as much. If you're not planning to multiclass you can ignore this, if you are and have questions please feel free to ask!
Sam C. |
1) I figured Maestro might be an issue, that's why I an alternative waiting to go :D. But it never hurts to try anyway, since the answer might have been a "yes," you know?
2) Cool, then my skill investment in Fly is a go! (And this right here proves the point I just made; I tried and got approved.)
3) Again, not a problem here, as I had an alternative--provided by you in allowing the choice between standard and UC monk to begin with, but still--waiting for use.
4) I'm not seeing what the issue is with Master of Many Styles. I'm going with the d20pfsrd version of the archetype, so it should be fully up-to-date and all. I've looked at the only errata FAQ for the MoMS, and all I can get out of that confusing hash of nested multi-quotes is that the previous version got ignore prerequisites when choosing style feats after the first for particular styles, and the new one doesn't? If that's the problem, then I'm fine; I'm meeting my prerequisites quite happily, because I actually plan to use them.
Edit: The only other possible issue I can make out, is the wording of the MoMS bonus feat selection and how strictly that's interpreted. If the strictest possible meaning is held to and only a feat with a [Style] tag is eligible for selection, then my build is borked, yes. The way the prerequisites go, the build order I posted is the only one that works with those feats, and not being able to take Boar Ferocity as my MoMS 2 bonus feat pretty well throws the whole damn thing into disarray.

Sam C. |
Yeah- the biggest draw of the original MoMS was that at second level you could take style feats that wouldn't normally be available until 8-9th level. You cannot do that anymore. Just wanted to make sure that wasn't going to be a surprise for you.
Nope, that isn't even a concern for me. But did you catch my edit to my previous post?
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
I didn't look through your plans for the future but you could be in trouble... in the nerfed version of the archetype bonus feats can only be a base style feat (e.g. dragon style, boar style, tiger style, etc) until 6th class level when they get the option to choose the 'wildcard' feats (which are used for things like dragon ferocity or boar's ferocity).
Sam C. |
Then that's a problem. The 3rd level character bonus feat can only be filled by Boar Style, since everything else on the list has a either a minimum BAB or skill rank requirement that no amount of juggling can overcome. I could, I suppose, go with retraining; fill the 3rd level slot with some garbage feat, get Boar Style as my MoMS 2 bonus feat, then retrain the garbage feat into Boar Ferocity at the same level. It'd work, but it feels so... sloppy!
Of course, this is assuming I'm actually selected, it might be a moot point :p. On the other hand, though, nailing down the problems before they crop up in play and jam up the game isn't such a bad idea.

Does this affect Prestige Classes?
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
@PDK- it could... I think in your case the BAB would be unaffected but when you get the save increases might shift slightly. iirc your PrC and base class are both full BAB with good Fort and Ref? If that's right then your saves would follow the exact same progression as if you were a straight class slayer.

Krayn La'jal |
Hey guys!
I know we're on the very last hours, but I felt nate's proposal was too good to pass. I have been working on this character, and I'd like now to submit Krayn La'Jal, a tortured crusader paladin.
Krayn is a tiefling with the "Pass for Human" trait, who doesn't even know what he actually is - he always thought he was human, until the incident gave him a whole different perspective.
As supposed, his bloodline is Abyssal - another reflex of his qlippoth heritage.
Thanks in advance to let me in, and best luck to everybody!

Recruitment is officially closed.
I got delayed, but it doesn't seem the extra hour made a difference. There's a lot of interesting applications, but about half as many as the last recruitment so (hopefully) I'll have the selections done before Monday morning...
I'm swamped tomorrow but I might just try to stay up tonight until I sort it out...

Please do not mistake a quick decision for an easy one... there were a lot of good applications but after a lot of reading, and even more hemming and hawing, the Children of Wrath will be:
Josie Fizzwicket- halfling summoner
Ellen Turan- human oracle
Axel Hagerson- human skald
Kejak- human fighter
You four, please check in on the discussion thread. Everyone else, thank you for your interest; I'm sorry I don't have more room. Happy Gaming!
