Welcome! I won't join in on the mechanical discussion of your char's creation, but I do want to say I'm looking forward to playing with the both of you :D

Shortspears, which can be thrown, have a damage dice of 1d6 so either way it's wrong.
Regular spears do 1d8 and can also be thrown. Sulan has some for ranged attacks (though it would be rare for him to use them). Longspears are the ones that cannot be thrown.
If it's a regular spear it's two-handed though so the STR bonus to damage is *1.5 though... so it should be 1d8+4.

Don’t forget, it’s not a spear it’s a Mind Blade. It only looks like a spear without taking a certain blade skill. A one handed mind blade regardless of appearance has a throwing range of 15 ft., a Damage dice of 1d8, and a crit range of 19-20/x2.

That's the question we're asking: is the spear listed on the sheet under ranged attacks a mind blade or just a regular spear?
From the stats given I'd say it is just a regular spear.
Fa'zakar
Howdy folks! I'm in the same game that leinathan recruited the others from...and your game sounded pretty interesting! Hope I'm not too late for the party =)
Fa'zakar is a young adult human herbalist escaping his dreary life in a port city, searching for glory and fortune in foreign land and wanting to make a name for himself! Not sure how much of a backstory everyone else shared, so my character concept and backstory is in the spoiler below - and would not be common knowledge for characters. ;-)
Also not sure if the small boat washing ashore in gameplay is the intro for us or not...so waiting to post in gameplay until cued. Looking forward to this adventure!
Fa'zakar vowed to never be poor, and started using some of his powers to accumulate some coins. Unfortunately, he was caught using magic he wasn't supposed to know to sneak into the Abbot's room one night, and he was banished from the temple and driven from the city in disgrace.
Living on the streets of large port city taught the older teenager how to hide, sneak, and disable locks and traps. First just to stay alive, and later as part of a small gang, he honed his thieving skills, keeping his magic hidden but using it when needed to keep him alive, or to help acquire something valuable!
When the chance came to leave his life behind and start fresh in a frontier, Fa'zakar jumped at it! The gang he was running with tried to stop him (since he was a successful thief who kept the group well-fed), but he managed to get out with a few prized items...a set of masterwork armor and weapons and a pack full of gear he would need. Besides, this was just another city he could never return to...there was an entire world to move on to!
During the subsequent months at sea, the man made friends easily with the crew and the other settlers. Fa'zakar let them know that he was an herbalist, dredging up his past knowledge of growing and mixing plants and oils. He helped out in the galley, providing some extra spices or combining them in unique ways to spice up the food. He also used his powers to keep the food and water safe for everyone, preventing many from getting sick. Of course, Fa'zakar never let anyone know of his magic abilities, nor of his abilities as a thief.
He also had the magical ability to comprehend languages from across the world, so he listened. A lot. And he remembered details. Doubts. Fears. Hopes. Secrets. Lies. All of these things Fa'zakar stored away for potential use later...

Any thoughts on his backstory? Do you think “he’s blessed because he was born pure” is too cheesy or nah? I mean it’s an actual in-universe thing for the culture but still. Also just so you know he doesn’t really buy into it even if he does have some skills suited to it.

I advise you guys to look in the Campaign Info tab, specifically for the houserules bit.
@Hazrond - Myth-Weavers is fine, just make sure to keep some of the vital stats outside of the link.
Backstory looks fine, not "too corny", I'm just wondering what choices you're going to make mechanically to represent that he has "natural leadership" ability.
Also, I think his ability scores might be a bit too high for 15pt-buy? Feel free to correct me, but I see...
2 points put into Strength, 5 points put into Dex, 5 points put into Con, 7 points put into Int (with the 4th-level bonus ability) and 2 points taken from Charisma, for a total of 17 points.
@Fa'Zakar - Don't forget your bonus skill point from being human and background skills. Should give you 3 additional ranks per level. Also, adept only has 2 ranks per level, so make sure you don't spend extra ranks.

There is an Alternate Racial Trait for Kitsune that let them trade the Racial bonus to Charisma for a bonus to Intelligence instead. So it is 2 in Str, 5 in Dex/Con, and 3 in Int + the Level 4 bonus. As for leadership ability i decided giving him the Natural-Born Leader trait plus generally high social skills would be a sufficient start till i take the Leadership feat.
Looking at these Feat Tax rules... all of my bonus feats were removed from the game? Any chance i could get a bit of a refund or something on that then? If i could take another feat in those slots that'd be nice. (To clarify, Piranha Strike & Weapon Finesse, while it doesn't TECHNICALLY say Piranha Strike by name every other feat of that variety was deleted such as Power Attack and Deadly Aim).

Got nearly everything done crunchwise. Just gotta write down all the Special Quality entries and write up his gear, then fluff up a little visual description for him. Looking good so far?

1. First, I'd like some kind of narrative backstory. Doesn't have to be very long or involved, or really special or dramatic (although it completely can be if you like). I would, however, like it to touch on a few key points: What was your character's upbringing like? What was their social status? Do they have any sort of profession, and how did they get into it? How old are they?
Gwen is about 21.
Daughter of a poor freeholder, Gwen grew up surrounded by a large family whose farm never quite filled their bellies. The faint air of desperation that surrounded the family made them an easy target for the nefariously opportunistic local lord. The sons helped fill his levy of troops; and they were glad of the work and food. But that left the family short of hands to work the farm. When the lord came courting the oldest daughter, Martha, the family was glad. But when she became pregnant, no proposal was forthcoming. Gwen walked three days to his liege lord's castle to lodge a complaint. The local lord was not pleased. Gwen had made a bad enemy. She, and to a lesser extent the rest of the family, became a subject for harrassment. Her brothers were posted far away. Eventually the family came to feel that they would be better off if she left.
Gwen talked Martha into leaving too. The baby was born on the road. They fell in with a band of traveling troubadores. Martha acted as cook; Gwen found herself performing a wide range of female roles, and even the occasional stint as a soldier in a large battle scene. She even helped out with set and prop construction, learning some basics of mechanics. (Engineering)
The sisters were soon involved with a pair of brothers. Life in the troupe provided a living, but it was often hard. The brothers were able to secure places with the expedition, and they left the troupe in hopes of a better more stable life.
2. Second, everyone (well, most people) have people in their lives. It's okay if your answers to this are "no people", but that has to be a conscious choice. I'd like you to include in your submission two characters: One NPC that your character is leaving behind in their previous life, and one NPC or PC that your character meets on their months at sea. What do these people mean to you? What do you think of them?
Gwen has left behind many people. Most of her family; then the troupe of entertainers. I can flesh them out if you wish.
She's held on to her sister, and nephew, her brother-in-law, and her husband. She's not particularly happy in her marriage. It seemed a good idea when they were all in the troupe, but life as a smaller unit has been more difficult, and her decision to marry was not a mature one.
On the voyage, Gwen might have become a spokesperson for the ship's cadre of settlers. As such she may have been friendly with the captain. Always a lover of maps, his charts were a beacon for her, and she passed some hours with him lokking at the charts and listening to his stories of adventure on the sea and in foreign ports. (Geography)
3. I want to know why your PCs are leaving behind everything they've ever known. Could be lots of reasons, but nobody does that sort of thing for s#&%s and giggles. Unless they do! Feel free to write a character like that, but it should be explicit.
The husbands want to give this a try. Gwen might not have really liked the idea, but she didn't have a better plan, and she wanted to keep the family together and watch out for her sister and nephew.
4. They have a class. Presumably, those abilities didn't manifest out of nowhere. Why are they whatever class they are? Did they get training? Did their grandmother f*%& a demon?
Grandma was a proper old Erastilian; no demon f@!+ing.
Gwen learned basic, primitive really, spearwork for self defense as a young village girl. That served her well on the road with her sister. With the troupe she had an opportunity to learn flashier choreographed spear work for both mass battle scenes and Shelyn pageants.
I imagine her soulknife in fact manifesting out of nowhere. She's not really cognizant of it yet. In fact, until the RP works out, she'll be wielding an actual spear that's like her focus for manifesting the mindblade. At some juncture, she'll figure out that it's not the spear she's actually wielding, but her mindblade.
5. What does your character look and act like? How do they come off?
How do they dress? What equipment do they use?
When she's with close friends and family, Gwen looks and acts like a peasant. She's easy, relaxed affectionate. In the company of strangers, she plays roles both to advance her agenda, and as a defense mechanism. She has a mix of resentment, envy, and scorn for authority figures and the upper classes. She is an advocate for the proletariat.
Her clothing and gear is utilitarian. The gear currently listed for her was actually purchased for the PC whose sheet I copied as a template for her. She'll have a chain shirt or breastplate, and coat or cloak, over homespun.
6. If your character has any self-awareness of their own alignment, what do they think of themselves? Why are they whatever alignment they are?
Gwen has the rules common to people raised in a community with some devotion to Erastil and Abadar, but those rules are a construct laid over a more free wheeling spirit. She thinks they represent what's right, but doesn't feel that way in her heart. I'd put her at mildly good near the line between neutral and chaotic.
I will do her shopping tomorrow and update her stats based on the equipment.

Hey folks. I just logged on for the first time in almost two months. I've been dealing with some addiction stuff, mental health stuff, and general life stuff. I don't think I'll be able to continue with the various games I've committed to online, but wanted to jump on and say that I appreciate all of you for reaching out and trying to work with me.
Thank you and good luck in your future adventures!
Richard

Best of luck in dealing with everything, Richard. I greatly enjoyed Yosiah as a character, and I enjoyed your writing. Hope to see you around the boards in the future.

I used HeroLab to create the character, so thought the skills would be accurate. The house rules may pose an issue...trying to load those in. I think it only applied to my Finesse Rogue (basically getting me Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat.) I'll see what I can figure out!
EDITED! OK - there is a way to import the Feat Tax rules in! Fa'zakar is now fully compliant using HeroLab. Exchanged Finesse Rogue with a minor magic ability - can cast prestidigitation 3/day as spell-like ability ;-)
leinathan
Yosiah - Best of luck with your issues. I'm sorry to hear that you won't be joining us, but thank you for letting us know.
Fa'Zakar - you should be using the Unchained Rogue, not the base rogue. This doesn't change much, but it does change trap sense to danger sense (it allows you to add its bonuses against surprise round attacks) and it changes Minor Magic to at-will.

Okay, done i think.
Mind givin him a good look over to see if you can notice any mistakes i didn't?

Okay, done i think.

Looks mostly good, except two things:
As far as I can see, you have to choose only one form of mind blade. If you're choosing "light weapon", then even when you only manifest one mind blade, it still only deals 1d6 damage.
Can you add a little bracket that says how many ranks you have in each skill?
Like this:
Acrobatics [1] +7, . . .
Hazrond
As far as I can see, you have to choose only one form of mind blade. If you're choosing "light weapon", then even when you only manifest one mind blade, it still only deals 1d6 damage.
Well, it only takes a Full-Round-Action to completely swap size and damage types. Even faster if you get certain abilities which I plan to pick up later.
I figured I’d list the two most commonly used forms there.
leinathan
That's incorrect.
A soulknife must choose the form of her mind blade at 1st level. She can either form it into a light weapon, a one-handed weapon, or a two-handed weapon. Once chosen, her mind blade stays in this form every time the soulknife forms her mind blade. The light weapon deals 1d6 points of damage, the one-handed weapon deals 1d8 points of damage, and the two-handed weapon deals 2d6 points of damage. All damages are based on a Medium-sized creature wielding Medium-sized weapons; adjust the weapon damage as appropriate for different sized weapons. In all forms, the mind blade has a critical range of 19-20/x2. A soulknife with powerful build or any similar ability forms an appropriately-sized mind blade dealing the size-appropriate amount of damage. If the soulknife’s chosen form is a light weapon, she may choose to form two light weapons when forming her mind blade if she so chooses, but she suffers the standard penalties for two-weapon fighting.
Regardless of the weapon form a soulknife has chosen, her mind blade does not have a set damage type. When shaping her weapon and assigning abilities to it, the soulknife chooses whether it will deal bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage. The soulknife may change the damage type of an existing mind blade, or may summon a new mind blade with a different damage type, as a full-round action; otherwise, the mind blade retains the last damage type chosen every time it is summoned.
Bolding for emphasis. You can choose the damage type (bludgeoning, slashing, piercing) but not the weapon size (light, one-handed, or two-handed). It takes a specific blade skill to be able to alter the type of mind blade you have access to on-the-fly.
Specifically, the Alter Blade blade skill, seen below:
Alter Blade
The soulknife gains the ability to shape her mind blade into different weapon forms. She may change her blade’s form to the light weapon, one-handed weapon, or two-handed weapon forms any time she forms her mind blade. Additionally, the soulknife may choose to form her mind blade into a one-handed weapon and a light weapon instead of two light weapons.

PCs that are already in Gameplay:
My last post was meant to give us some reason to keep posting: A character that you can question about conditions on the gillman island in order to make preparations before you leave. Feel free to chat him up :) Or not, it's your choice. When everyone (the new players) is ready, I'll throw us directly into adventure with a big summary post either way.
Hazrond
Have you taken a look at the Ability below it, Shape Mind Blade?
A soulknife must choose the form of her mind blade at 1st level. She can either form it into a light weapon, a one-handed weapon, or a two-handed weapon. Once chosen, her mind blade stays in this form every time the soulknife forms her mind blade.
The soulknife’s mind blade retains the last chosen form every time it is formed until the soulknife reshapes it. If the soulknife chooses to reshape her blade, it requires a full-round action to do so. She may also re-assign the type of damage dealt as part of reshaping her mind blade if she so chooses.
The Alter Blade skill allows you to reshape your mind blade for free every time you form it (and unlocks a really cool bonus shape).
leinathan
Same goes both ways: I hate it when a DM's wrong about something in the rules. Thanks for calling me out. Your PC looks good.
I think that it's best if you're introduced with a small group of survivors (including the other to-be PCs) just entering the village. You will have woken up on the shore a few days ago after a terrible storm, with ship bits and bobs, many bodies, and a few survivors around you. You will have spent the last two or three days journeying towards the site of colonization. Does that sound okay?
Hazrond
Okay finished labeling the skills for ya, I’m gonna go write up a little fluff description of his appearance and then everything should be golden.
I had hoped that he could have been part of the group that “founded” the settlement (read: washed up here and started fixing stuff up for people to not die), partially because I felt it fit in his character to try and keep things orderly and make the best of this sudden survival situation. But if that is too much effort on your part I understand.
leinathan
OK, a quick history:
About two months ago, the first group came. Sent before the official colonization effort, this group was of about 50 - farmers, builders, loggers, and mercenaries. This group has been winnowed down to barely 20, through misfortune and violence.
About a week ago, the larger colonization effort (of about 1,000) experienced shipwreck. Of these, about 300 were taken prisoner and about 75 washed up near enough to the settlement to make their way there and settle, including the current PCs.
It makes sense for you to have been here already - but only for about a week.
therealthom
That’s fine by me, sorry for the minor historical misunderstanding.
Edit: I can’t wait for the inevitable character tension between the two soulknives with exactly opposite upbringings and worldviews trying to get along
That should be fun.
Sorry I've been a little slow. Been traveling for work and/or entertaining colleagues/potential clients for the last few weeks. Catching up with the wife tonight. I'll have another go at Gwen's stats and shopping this weekend.
Fa'zakar
Same here - will futz a little more with Fa'za this weekend. Thinking I should replace prestidigitation with mage hand for the Rogue Talent cantrip...will also look to see if Unchained is part of the Rules set I have in HeroLab. =)
Gwen Portrow
Fa'zakar
I'm good showing up with the latest round of shipwreck survivors. Gwen - did we know each other before, or shall we take the easy route and say we only met on the beach after surviving the storm, and only learned a few things about each other (and the others) on our way to the settlement?
