I've got a feeling we're going to need it all.

Oh, and nice pick. Congrats to the secret door voters.

Sol smiles and shakes his head. Then he starts trying to figure out what's what.

Spellcraft Longsword DC18: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 We're in.
Spellcraft 5 Arrows DC22: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 YOu had that one, but this'll boost Sol's confidence.
Spellcraft 1 Arrow DC28: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 Aided
Spellcraft Breastplate DC18: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 We both killed it.
Spellcraft Shield DC22: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Still unknown. Next batter!

I guess we should split this stuff too.

Not ‘claiming’ anything, but Jod would entertain the masterwork cold iron heavy mace (returning Hannick’s cold iron weapon to her) and the composite (+2) longbow if the group doesn’t object.

“The shield offers slightly better protection than one of its size would indicate,” says Kaygan, examining it with his magical sight. “It can also emit light that can potentially blind anyone nearby – temporarily. The shield has enough power to do this twice per day.”

Yes, Kaygan really needs to claim some treasure!

Hmm, good point, not much stuff for mages so far.

Hp: 21 of 21; Effects active:

I more meant that I haven't looked at the treasure list to claim anything ... but yeah, there looks like a lot of 'fighty' items and less 'magey' stuff.

Sounds like a plan.

OK, I'm assuming that everyone has claimed what they want to take from the loot haul. You are now confronted by the barred and locked door in room 4.

HP 34/34 | Init +2 | AC 16 T 12 FF 14 | CMD 15 | F +3 R +3 W +4 | Per +1 | MP: 7/7

Once everyone is ready, Hannik points the chime of opening at the door and strikes it.

Chime of Opening, Lock: 1d20 + 11 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 11 + 10 = 29
Chime of Opening, Bar: 1d20 + 11 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 10 = 25
10/7 charges
I think I found why the Chime of Opening kinda sucks at its job as mentioned before. It is based on the knock spell which uses CL + 10 to open things. The item is missing that +10 and it is probably a mistake, but one that is unlikely to ever get errata. I included the +10 in the rolls above and may have still failed twice :P.

Hp: 21 of 21; Effects active:

Kaygan stands ready ...

Sol, remember to take a +3 bonus to your next initiative roll for Kaygan's anticipate peril spell.

Feeling preternaturally alert, Sol fingers the feathers of the cold iron arrow nocked on his bowstring.

What say, archer-types in Q7-9, and melee types in O,P7 and O,P9 ?

Sounds reasonable

Jod returns Hannik's cold iron weapon, thanking her for its use. It takes him a bit to get into the chainmail, but fortunately he has others to provide a little aid this first time.

As they prepare to open the door, he takes a knee in front of the door (in P8) so others can shoot over his shoulder if battle breaks out, prepared to stand and charge once the enemy is engaged.

Thinking Mulluq and Booam in the front rank, Ghroth in the next, adjacent to bow-ready Jod. Do we have another melee type? Kira? The back rank might be Wendaug, Kaygan, and Hannik. Other than Rhok, is that everyone?

So how about an arrangement like this? The empty space is immediately in front of the door.
| Booam | Kira | Kaygan
| empty | Jod | Wendaug
| Mulluq | Ghroth | Hannik

I'd rather Sol stood in the archery line. Kaygan or Hannik is more likely to be casting, or more likely to be effective casting. And Sol's got the bonus on his next initiative roll.

Ranger (Infiltrator, Skirmisher) 4/Champion 1 | 41/43 hp | AC 18, T12, F16 | Saves F8, R7, W4 | Perc +11 | MP 4/5 | Effects:

I knew I had overlooked someone, terribly sorry. I would suggest that Hannik be beside Ghroth ("below" on the map), then, and Sol take the spot beside ("below") Wendaug.

Kira tends to take up a rear guard, which means she ends up shooting her crossbow a fair bit. But she's good for Melee.

There is the clunk of the lock turning and the thud as the bar drops down to the floor.

Who's opening the door?

Mythic Power: 5{5}Wand Female Human Inquisitor 4 HP: 31{31} AC: 18 Judgement 2{2}:, T: 12 FF: 16 XP Treasure

Whoever is stood in front of it that isn't grolth or mulluq.....

Oh, I just looked up what Bane does.... wow that's awesome...

Bane gets a save, though, while Bless is a buff and doesn't require one.

We know that Mulluq would insist on being the one to open the door. Rhok doesn't seem to be in the formation, so I'll put him next to Mulluq.

You guys are just perfect for a fireball.

Along one wall of this long room stands a smashed sideboard. A stone staircase leads upstairs. Three blobby fiends slouch on the floor but burble happily and get up as new victims present themselves.

You have seen these before - they are dretches. Please roll initiative. I'm assuming, since you didn't say but carefully set yourselves up in line, that the archers will have prepared ready actions to shoot at any hostiles. You can resolve those actions first.

Booam was ready to go, moving into the room just before Mulluq can get in there. Raising his heavy greataxe high, he hacks violently into the first of the dretches.

Move to L9, no provoke as they are still FF. If D3 lives, he targets that one, otherwise, D2.

Sol Calondor wrote:

The way I work that is to apply the -4 for firing into melee. It makes it easer to work out the penalties, whereas the whole soft cover thing can be a bit confusing. For example, if you miss, do you hit the soft cover (i.e. your fellow party member)? I don't really want to get into that, so I just apply a flat -4 for shooting at anything or anyone in melee with a PC. Note that Precise Shot makes that penalty go away.

Although Hannik is ready with her crossbow loaded, the corridor is far too crowded to risk a shot. With only one demon left standing and it looking like the front line has the situation well in hand, she waits for now.

Hannik delays

They sort of stack. Target being in melee is -4 to hit (unless you have precise shot) and an ally or enemy standing in the path of your ranged attack to the target is +4 to the AC of the target (unless you have improved precise shot).
EDIT: I may have misunderstood what you were saying. Do you count both conditions as -4 to hit so the PC can figure them into the roll or do you ignore the cover penalty from an ally being in the way?

Sol's got Precise Shot. SOunds like Aubrey's just using the melee penalty. Yay for archers!

Indeed, no cover penalty from allies.

There is the thump of feet on the stairs as three tieflings run down, aim crossbows and shoot.

T1, T2 and T3 open fire on Kira, Jod and Booam respectively. Due to height differential with the ground floor only T1 can be reached in melee for an AoO (by Kira, with penalties for cover). Also, if you want to melee with them, you will need to go round to the foot and stairs at J7 and go up (except for T1).
T1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 to hit, damage 1d8 ⇒ 2
T2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 to hit, damage 1d8 ⇒ 8
T3 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 to hit, damage 1d8 ⇒ 2
