AJM's Rise of the Runelords: Anniversary Edition Campaign

Game Master AJM8665

In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia.

I sense that you have recently had to endure an RP tavern. You have my sympathies.

what is an rp tavern? I assume it is when people go crazy rping their characters in recruitment?

I personally approve of a brief snippet of character to help illustrate who they are when I recruit...but I would tear out my eyes if it was non stop

Yeah I dont like that much. Tends to get out of hand and go to far. Also unfair to those types that keep to themselves, give me a character I can discover things about over a transparent one any day. ;p

Precisely. This is all for fun after all. If anything else, repeatedly not making the cut helps one to challenge oneself more the next time. The more you write character backgrounds and make character choices, the better player you become. :)

An RP tavern is just that: when the players RP that their characters are together in a tavern. It's such an easy and stereotypical setting that it doesn't take any moderation. (Usually. OMG that one was such a cluster@#$%, with posts being deleted left and right.) However, it's also an incredibly annoying thing to happen in a recruitment thread.

I can't really put into words everything that I hate about RP taverns. However, I remember when I was new to these boards, and there was this recruitment where I couldn't even keep up with reading the posts (let alone responding to them). So I didn't even apply, IIRC, despite bookmarking it to follow it (because I thought it would be awesome).

And then it turned out to just be an ordinary game, where people posted every now and then; and I think it actually died out in short order. So yeah. They suck.

Of course, as my link is to my original background, I should probably update my character sheet on the likelihood the GM is following the links for ease of reference. Otherwise s/he will take a look & wonder 'why is someone submitting a Kingmaker Character for Runelords?'

edit: done. Although I have not updated my gear & funds. Going to hold off on that until I know I am chosen.

Not necessarily. Since one rarely gets any feedback on what was wrong with the submission, it is entirely possible for the next to be worse rather than better. If you never get to try the characters you don't know that your choices are becoming better.

I have seen no evidence myself that forcing people to write a huge fanciful background makes anyone a better player. It can give the GM more hooks to involve the PC but that's it.
I've seen alot of people thatgrow their characters as they play them. Excellent at both role and roll play.
I've also seen several people write a 3 page back story then don't do almost anything in play because it is all right there in the characters story. Nothing more is needed.

But that is what the GM's seem to want, so it must be provided to have a chance.

I think their is something to be said about party interactions. So I would agree backgrounds are just a hint of the character, they should never be all of what makes up that character. Never growing or changing is just boring, kinda why I dont play LG and the like. A goody good can only be spun so many ways.

Maybe I'm just an optimist. :). IMO, feedback can be helpful but I don't personally feel its necessary all the time. I like the challenge, but hey, that may just be me. :)

    Background in the profile.

Is Rance! always addressed with exclamation? ;)

Not always, just after people meet him. After about 5 minutes with him you learn to address him properly.

I dont know about anyone else but this extra time is making me fluff out Zoruk more. Oh the price of waiting. xP

I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I can make into the game. That seems to work about as well as doing anything else. :)

Home stretch, me cully lads and lasses.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what timezone the DM meant the recruitment close time to be in?

Quick if you have not gotten your hand wringing in now is the time!!

    I'm more for nail-biting rather than hand-wringing.

    What about hand biting?

Close, I occasionally bite my knuckles.

He said saturday, not any time so could be tonight or tomarrow.

    P.S. I just get energitic.

Sorry it took so long to get this done, but RL issues kept getting in the way.

    Caerwyn's Background:

As a young boy in Sandpoint, Caerwyn and the other young boys of the village were always getting in trouble. Ranging anywhere from minor vandalism to petty theft the youngsters proved more of a nuisance than any real danger.
Until one day, when he was thirteen, Caerwyn and some of the other boys in the village wandered too far from the town and got lost in the woods. It was getting dark and the group of boys began to be afraid when they saw torchlight among the trees near them. Calling out, the boys were relieved when the lights began heading towards them. They were saved.
Their joy was short lived as a band of goblins entered the clearing. Caerwyn picked up a big stick and prepared to defend himself and the others as the goblins fanned out to encircle the little band. The other boys, taking Caerwyn's lead picked up other sticks and stones in a last ditch effort at survival.
When the first pair of goblins rushed the tight knot of children, Caerwyn screamed defiance and ran out to meet them swinging his stick two handed. As luck would have it his wild swing connected with the lead goblin and laid him out, his skull crushed where the blow landed. This gave the other goblins pause, as they once more circled the group of boys probing for a weakness.
Deciding to rush the group en masse the goblins charged, only to fall into disarray as two feathered shaft suddenly protruded from the lead goblins. Unable to find the hidden archer and with three of their number dead or dying, the goblin hunting party turned and ran back into the woods, but not before two more fell to arrows in their fleeing backs. Suddenly a tall blonde women stepped into the clearing, she was the most beautiful woman Caerwyn had ever seen, she was the elven Ranger, Shalelu. Caerwyn had seen the eleven woman around town before but never paid much attention to her until now.
Shalelu let out a piercing whistle and looked around the battlefield while she waited. Noticing the dead goblin and Caerwyn's blood stained stick she smiled and nodded in satisfaction. Shortly thereafter several men from the village, including Caerwyn's father, burst into the clearing. His eleven features inscrutable, the elder Callandriil took in the scene before him without saying a word. In fact he said nothing to Caerwyn the entire trek back until they reached their farmstead. There he told the boy to meet him at the woodshed as he went to tell his wife that they had returned.
In the shed Caerwyn paced back and forth anxiously awaiting the punishment he was sure was coming. As his father entered the shed Caerwyn began blurting out all manner of excuses and apologies only to be brought short by his father's upraised hand. Quietly the young boy watched as his father reached above the mantle of the door and brought down an item wrapped tightly in oilcloth that Caerwyn had never seen before. Despite himself, he edged nearer as his father unwrapped the package and his eyes goggled as he caught a glimpse of an incredibly beautiful and gracefully cast sword. Caerwyn took an unconscious step backwards as his father pulled the weapon from the cloth and looked down the length of the blade. Turning to his son the old man smiled, he told Caerwyn how proud he was of him for standing his ground and protecting his friends from the goblins. Handing the sword to the young boy Caerwyn's father explained that this sword was his from his younger days and his father's before that and that it was his time to learn how to wield it properly.
Months passed as Caerwyn trained with his father and spent time with Shalelu, whom she called him her little "goblin slayer", in the wilderness around the tiny village learning the ways of woodcraft and survival in the wild. During this time the gratitude that Caerwyn felt for the elven ranger for saving his life grew into something deeper.
Years passed and the young boy grew into a young man who joined the Sandpoint militia as soon as he was old enough. Rising through the ranks Caerwyn now leads a small troop of men, several of whom were with him that fateful day in the forest, scattered around the village square watching over the gathered crowds and awaiting the dedication of the new village temple.

Okay so it's kind of long, but once I got rolling it was kind of hard to stop myself and I had to rein myself in at the end.

Okay all, I'm in the CST (Northwest Chicago) area. Tomorrow I'll be at a company party at the local pumpkin patch with my wife and daughter most of the afternoon, then at my friend's birthday party in the evening, so don't expect the final selection to be posted before late afternoon, around 4 pm CST.

I'll repost the alias list one last time before then.

Funny that, I'm taking the family to the pumpkin patch on Sunday.

    Have fun!

groovy, thats good timing for me, I can have a good birthday morning, then if I don't get in I can forget it over drinks at the party that night. If I do get in I can rejoice over drinks at the party that night.

Wave to the Great Pumpkin for me if you see him.

    Crossing my fingers.

Well its good we have an idea of the time. x3

Have a nice day out, for some reason I crave pumpkin pie now. I blame you for that. ;)

Ah, that reminds me of college (a long time ago) and watching school sports. You either celebrated the victory or drowned your sorrows. It was easy to remember though, since the process for both was identical.

Finally got rid of that pesky third trait from my profile; still not sure why it wouldn't update for so long.

All those submissions in one day, I'm impressed.

    Good Luck every one

Okay, before we head out the door I'm going to close recruitment, but want to add this submission soemone sent me via PM.

    Sir Egon D'Clausanne -Human Cavalier

I should be ready to post the successful candidates when I return home. Thank you all for your submissions and making an already difficult task even more daunting.

    Thanks,
    AJ

So the awaited day has come! xP

Have a fun day out with the kids.

So the updated list would have a total of 36 submissions. So thats a 2.8% chance for everyone. A 7.8% for martial, 16.7% for divine, 11.1% for arcane, 14.3% for skilled, and just a wild card on the last spot. Yes I am running the numbers thats what I do over hand wringing. xD

"Your data assumes all that all applicants possess equal chances of success. It fails to account for variables such as cognitive bias of the GM, writing skill of the player (as displayed by their background), and nepotism. As such, the numbers simply cannot be accepted as significant."

Well that was a bit of a downer there spectrum!

    Good Luck folks!

Oh I know that Spectrum, I just did not want to say that. I find it kinda mean and really you can never predict what a DM will judge upon. ;P

Just re-stating Calendir's presence and interest in this one.

    Good luck all.

    Ohhh,

I'm so excited! This is a great AP, and all the submissions are spot on.

If I don't get picked I hope you guys have a stupendous game!

    *crosses fingers*

Keeping everything crossed for this one

As the DM has said, recruitment is closed.

As always thanks for the list. Still makes you see how many people are going to be knocked out too. Geez 31 are going home, thats got to be a record. x3

Yeah, this is the most populous I've seen a recruitment. Granted, I've only applied to four PBP games.

Adjusted the weapons, masterwork'd the backpack, and updated the description to match. Not that it really matters. Just sayin', if anyone's curious.

Edit: She only has four visible weapons, because the dagger is in a wrist sheath, the ranged weapons are also melee weapons, and two of the melee weapons are gauntlets. And one of the visible weapons is a nonlethal sap. So it's not as bad as it looks.

Well good luck to everyone!! Maybe someone else will be starting a new Rise of the Runelords AP soon and we will all get to try again!

Rise of the Runelords in particular seems to be a recruitment magnet - I've lost count how many times applied for one.

Is that 36 people applying? Dang!

    Here's hoping

    @Jayne
I have changed my guy a good deal thru this whole time. So your not alone. ;)

Thank you all for applying, I wish I could make room for you all, but unfortunately a perty of 36 would draw unwanted attention. So i've managed to whitle it down to Six applicants (Yes, I said six). So I would like to invite the following characters to join me on this epic adventure.

•Durgan Helsenhammer / NG Dwarf Male / Fighter
•Salisandra Callinova / CG Human (Varisian) Female / Cleric of Desna
•Tania Teg / CG Human (Ulfen) Female / Inquisitor of Gorum
    •Chaise Zikaldiru / N Human (Varisian) M / Wizard (Air Elementalist)
    •Caerwyn Callandriil / NG Half-Elf Male / Rogue (Scout)
•Vachordi Strong Wind / NG Human (Shoanti) Male / Bard (Thundercaller)

To the rest of you I'm sorry that you were not chosen and hope that you and your characters can find the adventure that you seek.

Unforunately I'm pressed for time and don't have any to create a Game thread and OOC thread right now. I will have one up later tonight after I return home. When I do I will post the links here. Thank you for your patience.

O wow. I am a little bit shocked. Thank you AJM!

I am off to see Argo then celebrate my bday, but I will check in via phone and pop a post in the discussion later tonight.

Then make a post officially before I go to bed.

    Thanks again!

Also a sidebar...perhaps a little tacky I am recruiting for a wonky little homebrew game, but there is a lot of creativity in this thread

    HERE

    If anyone is interested.

Well good luck to all of you and I hope you not only survive but prevail. ;)
