Curve Ball Options in Book

Curse of the Crimson Throne

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have been thinking about opening up some of Korvosa a little if my players decide to not follow the conventional path. The other post on training with Vencarlo also made me think

They have just come out of the fishery and the anarchy has broken out. Only one has identified the brooch as the queen's. He has made noises about not necessarily sharing this. Also about trying to find out about his family's well being.

These are easily solved by making the thing impossible to sell as described in the book and blocking off south korvosa as it is already it's own district.

All this said it could slightly delay the immediate progress and rather than force it I may look for options.

But what if:

- I made Verik offer the PC who I gave him a pre-exisiting connection to (as a subordinate in the guard) the option to join his little breakaway?

( Would Verik do this? I assume he wouldn't take the whole group on his side? Or if he would perhaps introduce another shop... It could be fun for a group who are seemingly intent on being a bit nasty discover what is going on as a bit of a kick in the right direction...)

OR

- I offered the female swashbuckler an opportunity to join the gray maidens process before they are officially formed (I am not sure who would make this offer...Sabina?)

Now the question only is relevant if either player takes up the offer. I assume it wouldn't be fair to remove them from the game?

How would people suggest this proceed if they decide to go off and do something like this solo? I can't exactly have the players rescue the swashbuckler from the indoctrination process as early as book 1.

So if the player should overhear mentions of women being offered high paid guard opportunities (I have heard many say they foreshadow the gray maidens with people talking / gossip) and actually go for it - how could I get them out of it without spoiling things? Or should I?

This turned into a bit of a meandering post. I suppose a more simple question is, has anyone actually offered "side quest" like issues to players and does it do anything other than completely derail things?

(As an aside it could be a bonus for the sessions I struggle to get everyone along).
