It's a Matter of Style - How We Fight On Golarion

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

You roll to hit. You do damage. Rinse. Repeat. But how do our characters really fight? Throughout history there have been many masters and many fighting styles. Some more codified than others. From military fight forms, to classical sword styles, to unarmed martial arts there are many different styles of fighting. Here are a look at some of the Golarion fighting styles from Pathfinder as well as a few styles of my own that I’ve added.

What styles do your characters use to fight? Where did they learn this style? How common are fighting styles on your world? How do these styles effect the way your character thinks and acts?

One of my all time favorite characters is a fighter who wished he was a samurai; he was a half-orc of tian descent who's family had been exiled from Minkai. His grandfather was a samurai who taught him to fight with the nodachi, which was his preferred weapon.

He was an honor-before-reason type. Didn't like "dishonorable" combat. Didn't use a lot of combat maneuvers; he'd only ever try to disarm someone if he was particularly intent on ending a fight without killing the other person, would never intentionally trip his opponent. If his enemy got disarmed or knocked prone unintentionally - via fumble on their part or a generated crit on his, he'd let them pick up their weapon or get to their feet so they could continue the fight.

He wouldn't hesitate to kill, though. When the group was on the attack he was very intent on pressing it - had the full line of Step up, Following Step, and Step Up And Strike to show how aggressively he'd press the attack.

I tend to gravitate toward very showy, acrobatic types who like to make a spectacle or even a performance art out of fighting. Aldori Swordlords are one of my favorite because there's a lot of bravado and showboating involved, but beneath that is a very cautious and defensive style. One of my favorite characters to play is an Aldori Swordlord who puts on airs of being a typical reckless bravo, but is actually very calculating and cunning and never likes to go into a fight without first thinking up a thought-out plan, observing how the enemy fights if possible, scouting out the location, etc.
His continual frustration with how the normal pattern of adventuring plays out often makes that impossible is kind of a running gag.
