What might be the "best" ranged and melee class for this do you think?

Ironfang Invasion

Trying to get a head start as I REALLY wanna play this instead of GMing it, so I am looking for a GM who gets his/her copy early, plays in Roll20 Friday nights and up to 5 other players, but enough about that.

I looked at the classes one would think would be fun and perfect for this AP, Rangers, Hunters and Druids and so on but in the end I think a good Melee as well as ranged class might be best, (thinking of a Mercenary type who settled down in that small town about to be sacked kind of thing.

So what overall, class would be best for that?, Dips are not quite what I'm looking for here but maybe it has to be....?? But hopefully not.

Thanks

Tom

One classic way of doing that is to play a "switch hitting" Ranger. The Ranger combat style feats are bow-related (or other ranged options), and character level feats are melee-related. Quick Draw is a must-have feat, of course!

I'm AFB at the moment and it's been a while since I looked at the Hunter class, so I'm not sure if one can create a switch-hitter Hunter.

If you're OK with short-range (thrown), then flying blade swashbuckler using starknives, Starry Grace, Startoss Style/Comet/Shower, and Ricochet Toss can be pretty effective. Especially if you can pick up Advanced Weapon Training/Focused Weapon.

Gravity bow and lead blades; composite longbow and nodaci.

Alternately, go the feral hunter route and switch between ranged attacks and wild shape.

Thanks gang so far, so Ranger or Hunter still seems to get the best of both worlds then for these two specifics, Probably going human for the extra feat and skill point to get as many as I can. Should I also try a dip in the Fighter class or just a straight one class all the way through. Yep thought about wild shape for melee, not sure of yet on that aspect, if I did what is the best all around melee animal to go for, small, Med and large?

Thanks, Can't wait to find a GM and some players and get this started off early next month!!
