Is it legal to DM sessions with PFS and non-PFS in same game?

Pathfinder Society

The long subject heading says most of it. First, I am a longtime Pathfinder DM but have wanted to start DMing PFS for while now. I have a large, regular gaming crew, and can usually field an (online) table of 6-8. However, one 1-2 have indicated they want to play PFS. So my question: If I used PFS scenarios, is it legal to have PFS and non-PFS players in the same session, so long as I maintain the appropriate tracking paperwork for those who are PFS players?

You need to do adventure paths in campaign mode to functionally do what you're suggesting. You can't do it with scenarios.

Yes, but the appropriate tracking paperwork would be none.

You are more than welcome to use PFS scenarios outside of PFS.

If you want PFS credit for a scenario though, all the PCs have to be PFS characters.

Ok that seems pretty straightforward - thanks BigNorseWolf and Pirate Rob! BNW, I think I will try at first to follow your idea, of getting everyone to conform to PFS rules regardless of whether they actually play as a PFS character.

To clarify: any game with non-PFS characters in it is not a PFS game. Any character which has played in a game which is not a PFS game is not legal for PfS, even if it follows all the rules of PFS.

Basically, PFS characters can't play any other game.

Gotcha, thanks. I am lobbying my holdouts even as we speak.

Well, you could do the appropriate tracking paperwork for those that are not PFS players, basically telling them that they're in PFS now but don't worry about it, you'll do all the work (it's not a lot of work, really). The players who are in PFS will do their own paperwork as usual. The only thing is that all players need to ensure their characters are legal, but that's not exactly hard either.

Alternatively, as BNW notes, you can play an sanctioned module or adventure path (e.g. Rise of the Runelords) in whatever way you please, and the players will get certificates which they can assign to their PFS characters if they have them.

You can Make a "copy" of your PFS character and bring it to another game. As long as it is realized that when you go back to PFS the character needs to the one at the time of the copy. Meaning no upgrades or changes.
