Advice

So i have this idea for a character

Faust Ravenheart

basically he comes from a noble family, he was a necromancer (in secret) who fell in love with a lower class families daughter who happened to be a Dhampir. basically this ends with her asking him if he can find a way to remove the undead from her and make her human, long story short she dies and he ends up getting expelled from the family so they can save face and catches a lot of blame for it.

In this process he gives up the darker aspects of necromancy and tries to use what he learned for good and to try and redeem himself for even taking such a risk. using his research to help people speak to lost love one's, good things like that.

so the idea is to focus on necromancy but not the parts that are classified as evil cause i've given up on using raising the dead in a non-evil manner, it's not a thing people will allow.

other than that i'm looking for class suggestions to follow this concept. my thought so far is he's more mage like and spellcastery...basically i think a debuffing build.

He's kind of quiet and awkward, definitely not a bad person

other than that i really don't have much so ideas are appreciated

background is great! first question: is he arcane or divine?

thanks! haven't decided on arcane or divine no preference as of right now.

That's sort of part of the thing, i haven't chosen a class or anything yet so it's all still up in the air

Necromancer wizard with the life school. Honestly anything works for fluff, but check out the life school, quite appropriate.

Feats every Wizard should at least read: Preffered Spell, Flexible Wizardry, and the Improved version.

The perfect thing for you would be a wizard with the hallowed necromancer from Horror Adventures. They use the positive aspects of necromancy and swear not the create undead. They're pretty cool.

Um... I am not as up on the occult classes as I could be but...

A spiritualist seems like a natural fit for this.

However if you go wizard then your background literally screams for the spirit binder archetype

Your familiar is literally a piece of a love one that was bound here through death. It can really pick up your familiar for general usefulness and then the familiar gains some feats too.

I would then consider making your familiar a Figment familiar to make it more "ghostly" and keeps coming back even if something happens to it.

took a look at the spirit binder and i love it for this concept

Please note that the familiar uses a base class of your choosing to determine its BAB and base save throws.

I would suggest a ranger. That would grant full BAB to the familiar and good fortitude and reflex saves. Since the familiar can still borrow your base save throw bonus so doesn't need a good will save.

EDIT:

Later on you might consider the Faith Magic discovery. This character seems like the type that would dabble in magic beyond simply arcane.

Naderi is the goddess of tragic love and has the repose domain. Death ward is a domain spell at 4th level, meaning you could take the Faith Magic discovery at 11th level and cast death ward as a fifth level spell.

Just seems like something he would learn eventually.
