The setting is going to be Erf, from the Erfworld comic. I plan to have the party pop as a group of barbarians and make it sort of sandboxy my question is, what threats should i throw at them in a world of warring nations where the PCs are unaffiliated? What different ideas do you guys have? Is this a bad idea?

There is a huge difference in the assumptions of the Erfworld mechanics and Pathfinder mechanics. Caster classes just don't line up with Erf caster disciplines at all, wargame turns are used instead of rounds, and it just seems to be a huge challenge to accurately make PF rules fit the Erf setting.

It's a cool idea, but I would hate to try to make it work.

Im gonna scrap casting entirely and be using a homebrew setup, as for the turn mechanics those only doctate how far you can move in a day and such, so its not really a huge problem, the turns act really more like days than they do combat rounds, the only part that would be too hard to make something for would be casting and i planned to just use a loose "i have this many mana points and i want to do this, can i do that using my discipline?" And then ill make decisions based on circumstances and such, the setting is probably gonna be low magic, using something like the Automatic Bonus Progression from Unchained to help balance that, overall the PCs are gonna start weak but grow to be powerful before a side can notice and stomp them, allowing them some leeway to explore and such

I dont plan on the party having regular access to a ton of magic so they are probably gonna have like, a max of one caster PC at best

Maybe look into the mass combat rules in Ultimate Campaign and the mass naval combat rules in the Skull and Shackles adventure path?
