Rules Questions

in our last game one player jump into a body of water tied by the waist with a rope grappled by his allies. in the water was a foe they didnt saw and surprised the player jumping in the water.
next round his allies pull the rope and move him up

Do the foe gets an attack of opportunity?
If yes, is him negated his dex or mobility bonus to ac?

The monster gets an AoO.
I would say he still gets dex to AC if he has acted, but I wouldn't allow mobility because I think the intent is that you move under your own power.

PS: My mobility statement may be incorrect. I don't have any hard proof.

I've always read it as the active player has to be doing the moving in order for it to provoke, but it's certainly far from clear. Expect table variation.

Liberty's Edge

I would give the attack of opportunity in that scenario since the PC at the end of the rope is at a disadvantage....table variance...

The character would get no dex to their AC in the same way as a climber does not get it when climbing. They cannot move effectively.

Devil's advocate point, if the character was the target of a hostile drag maneuverthere would be no AoO. So a friendly drag should be more dangerous?

Not getting an AoO from a hostile drag is for balance purposes. Getting a "free" move is likely to come with consequences. I was sure I saw something at least semi-official on falling provoking so I thought this would provoke, but I can't find the evidence.

So now I will open up an FAQ on this. I will try to cover falling, and being dragged by a friendly character.

As I posted on that other thread:

By the logic of attacks of opportunity, you should get one in these cases.

Sometimes a combatant in a melee lets her guard down or takes a reckless action. In this case, combatants near her can take advantage of her lapse in defense to attack her for free. These free attacks are called attacks of opportunity.
Falling or being dragged sure sounds to me like a case of "letting your guard down".

Being dragged by a rope through water sounds even more like the PC is "letting his guard down".

I suspect you won't get anything more specific than that out of the RAW.
