Incensed about Incense

Pathfinder Society

As far as I can find, Incense as a purchasable item only appears in the Advanced Race Guide (if you're an Aasiamr, 10 sticks for 10g) and Occult Adventures.

So starting a new character with incense in organised play would require owning Occult Adventures?

I understand that material components can be purchased where the GM could expect they could be found, but what if they're not material components?

As a side note, 7sp each in Occult Adventures makes the Atonement for a deliberate misdeed (2,500gp in offerings and incense) using only incense would be over 3,500 pieces, which I also find quite amusing, and most likely particularly pungent.

Note: Alternate racial traits, racial archetypes, racial evolutions, racial feats, and racial spells are only available for characters of the associated race. Racial equipment and magic items can be purchased and used by any race as long as the specific item permits it (for example, only halflings can purchase and use solidsmoke pipeweed).

Incense: This aromatic resin, imbued with fragrant oils, is often formed into sticks, cones, or balls and burned in ceremonies or during meditation. A piece of incense burns for one hour.

Based on that alone, it seems legit for anyone in PFS to buy that has the ARG? (Not sure about OA, but if it reads similar, then likewise?)

EDIT: Kind of surprised that it isn't in Ultimate Equipment (well, *some scented items are*)

It's a material component for some Core spells (divination, commune, etc.), so should be purchasable for anyone regardless of sources. For spells that require large gp values, just assume you're buying the top-shelf product, not crates and crates of bargain incense.

*suddenly has images of a person in need of atonement with a cart loaded to bursting with 'cheap' incense showing up for one... "So where do I park this?"

Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm more concerned for a new, non-aasimar, non-spellcasting character.

Or does it mean that any character can purchase an item which is also a spell component? If so, at what price?

The listing in Advanced Race Guide also gives a weight, so that's around 250lb, hehe

For my cleric, I just keep track of it in terms of the gp value, rather than weight or number of sticks. So right now, his character sheet just says "Incense (550 gp)."

I assume this is just for roleplaying fluff, rather than some kind of shenanigan. Just pay what you think is appropriate, track it, and you shouldn't have any issues.

Thanks, yes - just for fluff - That does make sense.

After all, some people on the board default to the view that the poster is "up to something" and that they are not going to let them "get away with this kind of shenanigans", even when they can't think of any broken application themselves. ... yeah, I'm a bit of a cynic...just remembering "Yellow Tengu!")

ShawnieBoy,

you can always buy it as:

(generic) Masterwork tool: (50 gp, 1 lb)

Ten bundles of really good incense. This incense relaxes and soothes patients, giving you a +2 bonus to one heal check made while it is burning.

(Rewrite for handle animal, diplomacy, whatever as needed.)

While I empathize with your frustration, baiting is uncalled for. So far everyone has been helpful and polite, lets please keep it that way.

actually - I was hoping that by quoting the magic phrase ("Yellow Tengu!") we would avoid the School One types - and maybe get those persons that have the "denial auto-response " to pause a moment and think, before issuing a blanket objection. Sort of vaccination against that sort of response.

Or buy a spell component pouch (5 gp), there'll always be some incense there even if you aren't a caster as there exist at least one spell where the material component is incense with no specific cost. (I checked, at least a couple do exist, like Guards and Wards and Hypnotic Pattern). It's also waterproof, so no ruined incense.

As a sidenote, I find it funny to imagine what the pouches look like with all the stuff that you can always find there. Like Hideous Laughter requires tiny fruit tarts and all the dung from various animals for the stat-boosting spells.

That's a nice idea using them as a tool.

I just find it strange that Incense is mentioned a lot, but it's hard to get your hands on any.
Harrow carrying case (Harrow Handbook) has a compartment for some
Portable Altar (Ultimate Equipment) mentions it
You can buy inkpens, merchant scales, sealing wax and fishing hooks - but no incense except for ARG and OA.

A Seance Kit (Undead Slayers Handbook) has 10 sticks (amongst other things) and refers you to the Advanced Race Guide. Would you need both books? *shrug*
