Is a 3 level dip in magus good for any caster?

Advice

To have acces to spell strike, spell combat AND broad study with, day, an evil cleric, worth it? I know that with a trait you get 2 caster levels back but, is it worth it? has someone done this? I would love a neutral cleric with spell strike and cause wounds spells.

Remember, spell combat and spell strike are limited to spells from the magus spell list. UM - 9-10.

Personally, I think you're losing too much. Better to have a few extra high level cleric spells than spell combat.

That is why I mentioned 3 levels in magus to take the broad study arcana which lets you use another class list with spell combat/strike.

Except it doesn't work. There's a level requirement for that arcanum.

Broad Study (Ex)
Prerequisite: Magus 6, levels in another spellcasting class

Given that, I'd say "no, giving up three caster levels is almost never worth it." The difference between fifth level spells and seventh level spells is huge. The difference between fifth and eight is even huger (if you give up six caster levels instead).

No. Losing 3 levels from a full casting class is a terrible idea.
The trait does not regain those lost levels - it merely means that those spells you can cast have eg longer durations as if you were 2 levels higher.

oh, I didn't remember the level requirement. But yeah, the idea is that I wanted to use spell strike with cleric spells, so I supose 6 levels in magus is too much. Variant multiclassing and a spell storing weapon is my option then.

How about variant multi classing? Spellstrike is gained at 11th level

never multiclass your caster

To be fair, variant multiclassing doesn't cost you caster levels. It costs you feats, which may not be as bad (depending upon what you would otherwise plan to do with them). It will probably cost you spell perfection, for example, but if you can find something you want to do more badly than cast two spells per round, it might not be that big a hindrance.

You can only use spell combat and spellstrike with spells prepared in your magus spell slots.

Magus VMC isn't that much better. You can only Spellstrike with spells that are on the Magus list, even if you use another class' slots to cast them with.

Thou shalt not lose caster levels.

broad study arcana from VMC, questionable if it's selectable.

I see nothing "questionable" about it.

Since you need to be magus level 6th to select broad study, and you have a level in another spellcasting class, there appears to be no issue.

the questionable part is "another"

Do you have levels in cleric?

Is cleric the same class as magus?

no but it's the same class as cleric. :P I said questionable, obviously it should work, but I wouldn't put it past anyone to deny it for stupid reasons.
