I know I'm not exactly blazing a new trail, but these are easy and fun, so screw it.

The creeper was written up in a somewhat out-dated statistics style, sorry about that.

Creeper CR 2
CN Aberration
Init +7; Senses darkvision 60 ft, low-light vision; Perception +1
Language Common, Aklo (cannot speak)
AC 15 (+3 Dex, +2 natural), touch 13, flat-footed 12
hp 31 (5d8+10)
SR 11
Resist electricity 20
Fort +3, Ref +4, Will +5 (+4 vs mind-affecting)
Spd 40 ft.
Melee bite -1 (1d3)
Space 5 ft.; Reach 5 ft.
Base Atk +3; CMB +4 CMD 17 (19 vs. trip)
Special Atk blast
Abilities Str 12, Dex 17, Con 15, Int 4, Wis 12, Cha 6
Feats Skill Focus (stealth), Ability Focus (blast), Improved Initiative
Skills Stealth +21 Racial Modifiers +10 Stealth
Blast (Ex) A creeper may, as a full-round action, cause itself to burst in a 15-foot radius blast. This kills the creeper and inflicts 5d6 fire and bludgeoning damage to all adjacent. ALL within the radius include 3d6 bludgeoning damage (this stacks with the close-range damage). A DC 16 Reflex save halves this damage. The explosion creates a crater with a 15-foot radius—15 ft. deep at the center and raising by five feet for every square outward. The crater is treated as difficult terrain. This crater is negated if the explosion takes place underwater, and the radius is decreased to 5 feet if the creeper is standing on strong stone.
Feline Antipathy A creeper will not willingly travel within ten feet of a cat.
Creep (Ex) A creeper can use Stealth while moving at full speed without penalty. A creeper can use Stealth to move without cover as long as observers are not explicitly facing its direction, though it takes a -5 penalty which increases by -5 for every round spent sneaking in plain sight like this.
Charge (Ex) A creeper struck by lightning or dealt at least 10 electricity damage has its blast heightened. The blast now possesses a 25-foot radius and inflicts 8d6 electricity and bludgeoning damage to all within ten feet of the creeper. All within the radius take 3d6 bludgeoning and fire damage. The save DC is increased to 20. This affects the crater likewise.

Originally known only within the depths of the Darklands, these "creepers" have become more and more prevalent in dwarven mines and kobold warrens. Their origins are unknown—they seem to know no master, and indeed don't even appear particularly malicious. Some speculate that they were created in drow fleshwarping experiments, but drow, having suffered great losses from the awful monsters, furiously deny this.

Sages tend to put creepers in roughly the same realm as rust monsters and disenchanters: One of those nasty monsters one just tries to avoid. But creepers don't make that easy. They don't appear to be fully aware of what comes after the "boom", but they really, really want it. And they want people to notice.

Those few who have managed to communicate with creepers have said that, above all, above even their self-destructive instincts, the creatures appear to be intensely lonely.

Charged Creepers (CR +2): A creeper that has been pre-charged is most feared of all, which is why they are so fervently hunted above the surface. Lightning storms are regarded with utter dread in communities besought by creepers.

Dark Archive

Funny thing is, the Creeper I made was CR 2 as well.

It's a good CR for them. Most Overworld monsters will average around .5-3—endermen might hit CR 5, though they're technically End creatures.

Needless to say, the existence of a potential 8d6-damage gank at first level strongly motivates PCs to invest in Perception and Initiative, as well as just occasionally clarifying "I look around for a moment". Creepers' presence should generally be hinted at beforehand. As an area-of-effect 28-damage explosion, it could easily end a campaign without preparations.

Honestly, it could probably go up to CR 3, it's just a question of their being noticed. In hindsight, I might either confiscate their Improved Initiative or lower the Stealth bonus. Perhaps creepers are not allowed to Take Ten while creeping.
