What spells should my arcanist take?

I'm pretty certain that my arcanist, Riva Sarjenka, will be leveling up to level six just as soon as my PbP group finishes this encounter with six bloody skeleton trolls.

I'm trying to decide what 3rd-level spells I should take. I need to pick two. I already have all the core spells of 2nd-level and lower.

What might you recommend?

- Fly, almost always the first level 3 spell to pick.

- Spiked pit is the sweet spot of pit spells for me, easy way to eliminate a non-flyer.

- Haste is good if you have a good number of damagers.

- If your GM lets you take it paragon surge can be amazing.

- Chain of perdition gives you an offensive option that gives you a few combat maneuver options and doesn't rely on saves. It's a force effect so it works on incorporeal creatures too.

- Dispel magic usually makes it into my spell book at one level or another.

- Fireball ...

Many people will be mentioning: haste, fire ball, SM 3, and Pit spell.

I really like taking Fly as my first spell. If you have an archer in the group fly can own fights. An archer can solo groups from the air and be completely safe. Or if you come across a flyingenemy it is the answer for your damage dealer.

So fly and stinking cloud.

A few others are dispel magic and Aquatic orb. Of course the popular ones are good choices too. I like them but i feel rushing haste before the entire group gets thier 2nd attack is a better time to take haste. The non full bab classes dont have it till 7+.

Haste in any case. It is not only the second attack at highest but it also movement AC attack and ref safe. So you buff 4 things with one spell. No other spell gives you so much opportunity

Heck it is a oh f&@~ we have to run away spell!
For the second spell it depends on your group!
I love heroism, because sometimes you need the extra little bit to succeed in stealth climb or even knowledge.

Well I prefer to be a great buffer to a great damage dealer as arcanist. Fly is nice for sure, but heroism has soo many out of combat abilities too.
Another thing. How often is haste a great spell in battle. Almost always. How often is heroism a great spell "in" and "out" of combat. Almost always!

If you want to take the group into consideration, we also have a dual-cursed battle orcale, invulnerable rager barbarian, and a maestro-bloodline sorcerer.
