Sorcerer Bloodline: Storm Touched

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Been wanting to do a storm themed sorcerer for a while, but none of the bloodlines available really work for what I have in mind. So, how does this look, balance wise?

Its mostly a mash up between the Stormborn and Djinni bloodlines, with a unique 1st level power. Not sure if its in line or not, given the arcana.

Storm Touched
You were struck by lightning at an early age, and have been marked by the storm as one of it's own.

Class Skill: Knowledge (nature).

Bonus Spells: shocking grasp (3rd), gust of wind (5th), lightning bolt (7th), shout (9th), overland flight (11th), chain lightning (13th), control weather (15th), whirlwind (17th), storm of vengeance (19th).

Bonus Feats: Dodge, Empower Spell, Great Fortitude, Improved Initiative, Lightning Reflexes, Skill Focus (Knowledge [Nature]), Toughness, Weapon Finesse

Bloodline Arcana: Whenever you cast a spell that deals energy damage, you can change the type of damage to electricity. This also changes the spell’s descriptors to match this energy type.

Bloodline Powers: Your connection to the storm manifests in several ways.

Thunder & Lightning (Su): Starting at first level, whenever you cast a damaging spell with the Electricity descriptor, you deal an additional +1 sonic damage for every 2 sorcerer levels you possess.

Stormchild (Ex): At 3rd level, you gain resist electricity 5 and resist sonic 5, and treat wind effects as being one step less severe. At 9th level, you treat wind effects as being two steps less severe and gain blindsense 60 feet against concealment from natural or magical fog, mist, or weather effects.

Thunderbolt (Sp): At 9th level, you can command a stroke of lightning to strike from above in a 5-foot-radius cylinder 60 feet high. The thunderbolt inflicts 1d6 points of damage per sorcerer level; half of this damage is electricity and half is sonic. A Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier) halves this damage. Creatures failing their saves are deafened for 1 round. At 9th level, you can use this ability once per day, at 17th twice per day, and at 20th three times per day. This power has a range of 120 feet.

Elemental Movement (Su): At 15th level, you gain a fly speed of 60 feet with average maneuverability.

Storm Lord (Ex): At 20th level, you are one with the storm. You gain immunity to deafness, stunning, and wind effects and gain blindsight 120 feet against concealment from natural or magical fog, mist, or weather. Once per day, when attacked with an electricity or sonic effect, you may forgo your saving throw and absorb the energies of the attack, healing 1 point of damage for every 3 points of damage the attack would otherwise have dealt.

The first level power is more somthing that should have been a arcana. It is one way too good compared to other level 1 powers and not really as good as the arcanas it leans against.
I Fail to see the niche for stormtouched when there is a stormborn bloodline. I would rater make a wildblooded version and twist the theme a bit more.
Now it looks like you just took the best from two bloodlines. That is what crossblooded is fore.

Well the niche I want to fill is a storm based caster that doesn't turn into things. I don't want to be a whirlwind, I don't want to turn into lightning, etc.

I just want a sorcerer that is at home in a storm, which requires stormlord, imo. But I don't Want to be an Archer or ray specialist, so all of the storm born bonus feats are worthless. I don't want to play a gish, so I don't care about enchanted melee weapons as an ability.

I want a sorcerer that uses a pure storm theme, which means all damage he does should be electric or sonic. It would be nice to have a little bit of energy admixture as a bloodline power just so his lightnings have accompanying thunder.

As far as crossblooded dedicated goes, I don't want both arcana at the same time, I don't want double the bonus feat choices, I just want bloodline powers that fit a single theme, a bonus feat list that makes sense, and to not transform more than a druid with ADHD. And for that I should lose 1/6th of the entire power of the class?

Frankly the Elemental bloodline looks like what you want (though the last note is a thing).

With this one, going down the list...

Feat list honestly looks a little... too custom built. Sorcerer feat lists have a lot of chaff in them. Kinda sucks, but it is what it is. I see no feats that are actually outright bad for a Sorcerer, possibly barring the nigh-mandatory Skill Focus, while I can't name a single existing Bloodline without at least one headscratcher option. That list is almost identical to the Djinni's... with the aforementioned headscratcher pulled for a very solid feat.

Arcana is what it is. Almost wasted but hey.

Yeah, the first-level power is insanely overpowered. To a one, the first-level powers are about granting Sorcerers additional options; something to do in combat that isn't casting a spell.

After that you're hitting basically Stormborn + Flight. Which... frankly makes me echo Cap. Darling.

What you want is Crossblooded. And yeah-- losing the spells known can bite (losing the progression actually bites harder, mind, but hey). But the immediate response to "this bloodline plus this bloodline is what I want" should, generally speaking, be "let me combine them legally" not "let me try to game my way around the drawbacks of combining them". Because what you created is literally Crossblooded Djinni + Stormborn, but with a better feat list, a worse arcana, and a pseudo-arcana that is arguably better than the arcana you lost anyway.

Yes. Crossblooded's penalties suck. Everybody who loves Sorcerers winds up dealing with them though-- and sometimes, for much harsher reasons than "I don't want to turn into lightning via a completely optional power".

If you want to turn this into something new and interesting, well, there's some room for that. You'll have to work for it, because there are already three electricity-oriented bloodlines (plus wildblooded on two of them), but it can be done. It just requires more work than this.
