I will say this is one of those many situation where having a character creation session is preferable. SO many incompatibility issues are solved by sitting down together and hashing out what you want to play and how you want to play it as a team.

True, but my last regular group, though they did the char-gen session... Still had the mentality of "This is what I'm going to play, you guys build around me."... Each and every single one of them. My fiance and I wound up having to build characters to cover gaps in the party (sneak-thief and support, specifically). Then again, these were all people who were outcasts from other groups in the area.

Sometimes, a char-gen session just doesn't work. Or, my personal favorite, is when they agree, then come with entirely different characters.

I'd love to find a group that supports the team mind set. Unfortunately, it seems all the groups in my area are full. Please don't say PFS, My fiance and I can't stomach their house rules.

Sometimes though, I think the 'mis-matched pc' is more of an attempt at proof of concept, or the player was jonesing on a particular concept. I've been guilty of that a few times. Android Nanite sorcerer, exiled Kyonin prince (Elf) 'tainted' sorcerer (cross/wild blood Envenomed/pestilence), stuff like that. I, at least, work darn hard to make it fit. Helpful GMs help alot.

Ahhh... the ego problem. Unfortunately there is no way to pleasantly fix that one. There is a saying "With pride comes a great fall" Ultimately these people will just alienate everyone till they are either broken of their ego or all alone but right (at least in their own mind). I don't envy you having a whole table full of them. At least you and your fiance can build together as a two person team. That will at least give you a measure more survivability than the others will enjoy as lone wolves.

Isnt the key problem just that people have different ideas about fun?

My idea of fun is a grimdark low-magic 5 year long 1 session per week roleplaying slog of epic proportions where the final sessions are the crashing crescendo of destruction and twisting plot points finally coming together as the last mysteries and challenges are beaten by the players and their hard earned high-magic items wrought with great difficulty by themselves or found, each item worth entire campaign of adventuring.

Yet as GM I have never sprung an adventure of this kind on my players because I know for a fact that most of them do not have the desire to play such a campaign.
If I had to make an educated guess, I´dd say my extended player group consisted of the following:

Myself, who prefers deep and lengthy story with a lot of mystery and difficulty. If I tried to say what kind of players I am it would be a lie because no-one can be their own judge of character.

A friend of mine, who prefers deep story and difficulty as much as I do, but prefers them in moderately sized chunks so that he might change up his character every now and then and tackle an entirely new challenge.

A second friend, who likes the idea of deep story and mystery, but when his feet have been planted firmly on the roleplaying dancefloor becomes a powerful moving force of chaos that embodies the ideal of "Lets just poke it and see what happens!".

A work buddy who prefers imaginative stories with a tinge of mystery, he likes to build a character that has a concept and a goal, if the story allows for the character to follow his morals then he can play forever.

A third friend who likes to play a superior character on a background of plebs, he spends a lot of time building something with nuclear bombs for hands and prefers seemingly difficult figths that he can then steamroll through. If there isnt enough combat he quickly becomes disinterested.

A friend of a friend who likes character building in general, who greatly likes an interesting story and interesting characters. In game his character sometimes stops contributing because the player likes to sit idly and watch the story unfold, because the story in general is more interesting to this player then playing the game.

A friend of a friend who likes a good story, but really likes winning, and gets caught up in revenge or defense if his character is hurt or wronged. To the point of dominating a story to get revenge on a minor character. He enjoys roleplaying, but only if his character is on the winning side, even if losing occationaly is part of the story.
.

The point is, all of these guys enjoy the game differently, whether its by the edge of their seat waiting for whatever happens next, or solo choreographing past victories in their heads. Some of them sometimes have detrimental effects on a game, othertimes it is greatly enriching. (For example the sore looser, the moment when he finally sunk his axe in the skull of the ultimate villain of campaign X the victory celebration enlivened the game for everyone at the table).
