Campaign Setting with Toolkits

Product Discussion

One of the more interesting things I discovered while working on Obsidian Apocalypse, is that when you build a campaign work, you never really know how people are going to use it to play their game. When we built Obsidian Twilight (the predecessor to Obsidian Apocalypse), I thought of it as a zombie apocalypse setting but others thought it was a post apocalypse good versus evil setting. While even more thought that it would be more gothic / classic horror.

The reason is that people have their own interpretation of the word “horror”. So that is why we have a “generic” setting for Obsidian Apocalypse plus four custom toolkits that you can make your own custom setting and people have really responded to it. So I am wondering, is this something people would like to see campaign setting do in the future: One main “generic” concept of the setting a several toolkits to customize it any way that you might like to? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Surprised no one replied to this yet.

I've found that I get more mileage out of a toolkit approach. Whenever I've designed homebrewed worlds for my home games, the 'light' touch seemed to garner a bit more favor with the folks that I've played with. Come up with a basic setting, then jot down a lot of bits and pieces to slot in where I need them to be in the adventure. Nothing quite as large as Obsidian Apocalypse (Which I love, btw, and hope to get a group where I can run all 4 kits for maximum 'Crap has hit the fan!'), mind you, but bits and pieces.

Granted, I've got some other settings designed from the ground up. For example, I've got one I designed from literally the creation of the universe, with detailed bits of every era from the beginning of the planet's forming from a nebula of pure magic. Despite people able to play in any era and time of the setting, they seem intimidated by it.

So, yeah. I say go for the toolkit approach. I know for me and most of the people I know, it's the preferred way to go.
