Questions about teamwork between players

I decided it would be awesome if I could get someone and me to make characters built around helping each other to make an unstoppable team. But I am not entirely sure if/what rules cover this.

Here are my main questions:
1. Am I even allowed to plan on being at the same table as another player and build a character to work together?
2. If I am allowed to do this can I use my pathfinder society account for the characters but at the table I play one character and he plays one character?
3. Would using this strategy be considered cheating.

If this helps I will give a summary of this idea.

Their will be two dwarves one named Pain and one named Gain (no pain no gain). They grew up together and spent years training to fight using teamwork. Pain is a barbarian and Gain is a Bard. When they are in combat Pain will stand between Gain and the enemies while fighting them back. Gain will use his bardic performance to boost Pain (and other allies if they are in range)then shoot arrows at enemies. If Pain gets injured Gain will heal him with cure light wounds.

Thank you for reading, I am also open to suggestions as to how I can improve this strategy and make it better (even if it isn't society legal I can still use it in non society games).

Just try to play games together with your friend. So long as you stay reasonably close in level you should be able to plan on playing together your entire career. We have a group of 3 Half-orcs locally that do this (named Rough, Tough, and Buff).

You must each have your own account, though.


And using strategy, particularly on as simple as the one you suggest, is certainly legal.

And a team of half orcs named Rough, TOugh, and Buff just sounds awesome (don't worry I wont steal).

Thanks, yeah when comes to organized play I try to be careful. I wouldn't want to throw off the whole system.

Believe me, there are much more optimized sets of PCs, including a whole party that only plays together.

Husband & wife PC pairs.

Local full tables.

Building not just complementary PCs, but building with the Teamwork feats, or other 1-2 punch type feats.

Some examples:
A trio of Rogues building with the Gang Up feat and high ACs in mind, so they will almost always get flanking and sneak attack when they work together.
A pair of PCs, one with a high crit range weapon, the Desnan Butterfly Sting feat, and a high Initiative modifier, and her ally, who is slower, built with a high Strength, and a 2-handed weapon with a large Crit multiplier...

I have played with a pair of Half-Orc Barbarians, set as siblings, both with the Half-Orc feat that raises their Rage modifiers to +8 to Strength and Con.

I currently am running for a pair of players who have "related" PCs, one is a Brawler/front liner, the other is a Face/support type, who orders the front liner around...

And we won't play "Summon David" by mentioning Summoner/Eidolon pairs, or Druids and their Animal Companions...

There are plenty of people that make team-based characters and only play them together. Most organizers will allow you to table together as long as there's not some crazy conflict that comes up because of it (i.e. over limit with both, you were last to RSVP).

Each player must have their own Society number. They're free, after all, and it's for tracking players as well as characters.

Regarding #2:

You can't play someone else's society character. If the GM tries to report the session, your character will be 12345-01 and your friend's will be 12345-02, which will probably get kicked back as an error.

Just have your friends create their own accounts and plan to play certain characters together. A lot of friends and relatives do this--it's not a problem at all.

My husband and I try to have a couple of characters in each tier. We usually end up pairing off characters because of theme, personality, or abilities. Sometimes, we specifically build characters that we only play together, like our teamwork-built two-weapon fighter sword dancers who are also a professional dance duet or our twin bloodragers with Amplified Rage. Sometimes characters evolve together because we coincidently end up playing them together.

If you really want to play strategy, just plan several tactics that your characters together. If you end up not playing together that day, just explain your regular tactics to the group and see if there's anyone else in the party who can fit your friend's usual role.

(I have an Honor Guard cavalier who introduces herself with the phrase, "Just stay next to me, and I will protect you." Mechanically, any adjacent ally gets +3 AC, and she can use Bodyguard to boost them by another 7. She has to explain her build and tactics to each table she sits down at, but it usually works.)

Now that I think about it, alot of my players come in pairs. I got twins that play (and GM now), I got a father and son pair, and I recently picked up a boyfriend/girlfriend combo.

The twins are planning to make twin characters that work well together. They wanted to make Inquisitors, but they really just ant characters with teamwork feats.

Teamwork feats were pretty much invented to allow and encourage this. It doesn't always work in PFS because you might have to sit a different tables due to logistics.

It's always good to split up if needed, because your table getting the optimized bonuses is not worth having a team go in under-prepared or without a healer, tank, or whatever. We serve at the pleasure of the Decemvirate, so sometimes we have to work under less than optimum conditions.
