Beyond Tabletop: Pathfinder tools (beta)

Product Discussion

Hello, fellow Pathfinders! I wanted to let you know that Beyond Tabletop is in open beta, which is free for anyone to signup and use.

http://www.beyondtabletop.com/

Beyond Tabletop is a set of tools for RPG players who want to enhance their in-person game sessions with cleanly designed, easy-to-use online character sheets and maps. It currently offers two products - a battle map, which is designed to accommodate many RPG systems, and character sheets, which are built for the Pathfinder system.

Take it for a test drive and let me know what you think!

Only this message:
"Oops! You don't have access to this sheet."

Oh no! Sorry about that. That error occurs when you try to access a file on our site that your logged in google account doesn't have permissions to view. It could be that your login didn't work, or maybe you're trying to access someone else's sheet?

I would try going back to the homepage, clicking login, making sure you've granted authentication to the Beyond Tabletop app from your google account, and trying it again.

I also followed up on email so you can let me know if the problem keeps up.

Nope, I get this error when I try to create a new sheet. Or a new Map:
"Oops, it looks like you don't have access to this map."

I accepted the two questions about authentication and I don't know how to review that. Maybe you could point me in the right direction?

The Exchange

Dotting for interest....

@Jeremias That's super weird! Try going here:

https://security.google.com/settings/security/permissions

Find Beyond Tabletop and revoke access. Then go back to http://www.beyondtabletop.com and click the login button again. Once you land on the dashboard, click the + Sheet and see if it still happens.

If it DOES happen, then try refreshing the page a few times and letting it load. We've never run into this error before, so we're still trying to figure out what's going on.

Lastly, if all that doesn't work, go to https://drive.google.com and find the Beyond Tabletop files you created listed in your documents. It should say something like "Beyond Tabletop Pathfinder Sheet." Right click on one, click share, and when the window pops up, share it with my gmail account (I sent you an email with the address). That will help me see if the sheet is busted or if there's something going wrong with the account.

Sorry again for the troubles!

It works. A silly thing, stemming from the fact that I have two google accounts... More detailed description in the mail.

The sheet looks slick and easy to use. Also, using google it usable on my tablet. Especially the battlemap I will use a lot of times, because this is great. I plan to enhance my gaming room with a beamer and this has great potential.
Great work so far, I look forward!

That's great news! Thanks for the feedback.

Recommendations and things to look over:

For the section with the dropdown list of pathfinder classes there should be an option to write in a class that is not listed due to someone playing a class that Pathfinder is playtesting or a 3rd party class, or any other Prestige class not listed.

Now you are probably going to say that the system automates the save based on the class you choose. My solution for that is to allow the player to be able to select if that class has a good or poor save progression for certain saves. By simply selecting good or poor your system still gets to do the math, instead of the player having to manually change the base save every time they level up.

I gave myself armor at +9, and it shows up as 0 on the "combat" tab. Furthermore it does not even add the armor to my overall AC. I even took the armor bonus down to 0 and my AC in the "combat" and "overview section never changed. It does take dexterity into account. The same thing happens if I choose a shield. Dexterity is taken into account, but the max dex on armor is ignored so it seems like you need code to connect the armor(armor, shield, etc) to the rest of the sheet.

PS: I think it is easier to have most of the sheet on one page instead of across several tabs, unless you intend to eventually make the "overall" tab give the player most of the information they need in one place.

I don't know what else is supposed to be automated so that is all I have for now. Now I will look at the battlemap.

Now I will look over the battlemap.

The battlemap was pretty simple. I do have questions.

1.How do I use images of tokens in place of letters?

2A. When trying to add a map how how do I get it down to a certain size such as " 80x80"? <------I actually know one way to do this, but many people may not so you should probably provide instructions on how to do so. Your method may also be easier than mine, that is another reason I will stay quiet about my method for now which involves using photoshop or GIMP.

2B. What do you mean by the image should "contain four 40x40 squares."?

@wraithstrike Thanks for your feedback!

For the armor, you'll need to check the "Equipped" checkbox for any of the calculations to your stats to take effect. That's something a few people have already been confused about so I think what I'll do is make new armor and shields equipped by default.

For the classes, a lot more than just the saves calculate based on class. I will definitely be adding support for more classes as I develop the sheet, so for now class selection will be limited to what's in the select dropdown.

The Overview tab should show you just about everything you need to use once you fill out a sheet. Scrolling vs tabbing is a personal preference, but maybe we can add that option somewhere down the line.

In regards to the map:

1: Just enter a URL for your background image into the Image field and the token shape and letter will disappear, using the image instead.

2A: Right now the map background is designed to be used with "tiles," repeatable images. You can definitely put a whole map in, as long as each individual square is 40px x 40px. We don't have any resizing tools, but if it's something a lot of people ask for, we'll see what we can do.

2B: The text description there needs an update. I was showing the default background image which is four alternating-color squares that are 40px by 40px, totaling an 80px x 80px image. You can definitely use a larger image but to achieve the basic tile effect the default image does, those are the instructions to follow.

1. So people will have to save their image online and then link to it?
Most people have their images stored on their computers. People are lazy when they are online so this extra step may not go over well.

As for the armor the option to not equip it is good. I just missed the "equipped" check box. I see it now.

2A. So no whole maps? This feature is for building your map by section?
For an example of what I mean by dropping an entire map in check out roll20. I want to be sure we are not talking past each other. A youtube video may help people also since some people learn by seeing rather than by reading words.

I was not asking for you to resize an image. I was saying that most people do not know how to resize an image to fit your software so you may want to tell them how to go about doing so. However if you could fit that into your software I guess that could also work.

1. We aren't going to offer storage for images because it's expensive and other companies already do it much better than we could for free. Lazy people (like me) can use the default tokens and shapes to give their players a rough idea of what the battle landscape looks like.

2A. I think we're talking about the same thing. However you're right, I should upload a video explaining background images since the terminology can get confusing. Thanks you!

I figured you were not storing images due to the money it would cost but then I was "Infinite Storage" on your site so I was confused. I am assuming you were referring to storing the link.
