Silly roleplaying perception DCs...

Advice

OK. I'll admit. This will be a silly thread.

My life oracle overheard a shoanti shaman accusing one of her party members (a shoanti from a different tribe) of being "only 12 years old" because he hadn't accomplished anything.

She took this quite literally, so she knows he's embarrassed, and is trying to protect him without his finding out.

Here's what I have so far:

Life Link: Honestly, I think he's out of luck. It's a supernatural ability, it has Medium range, and it has no save. So she can slap this on him while he's asleep and he's stuck with it until she decides to remove it.

Endure Elements: This one is harder. She already casts it on herself every morning when he's asleep, so what's the DC to notice that someone is casting a spell a second time when you're asleep? I was thinking 10 (whispered conversation) + 10 (asleep), but a DC 20 to notice she's casting the spell twice instead of once seems pretty low for a sleeping barbarian.

Endure Elements: We're traveling through coastal mountains and then a temperate forest. What's the DC (if there is one) for him to notice that the temperature is always "perfect"?

I know it all seems very trivial, but the GM and I are planning on playing this "12-year-old man" to the hilt, so we want to get all the DCs right.

Well....
"To provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice."
So "10 (whispered conversation)" doesn't seem to apply.. If you have been casting spells over and over again I would say that the DC would be impossibly high if character were sleeping and it being a harmless spell. However they might be more able to notice once awake. I would say the perc DC might be the saving throw DC +10 being harmless just to notice when waking. However in extreme temps when it is being used it might come up again as a different DC....This is becoming alot of work....DC+10-(perc or survival bonus of barb)....

Hows that?

Yeah, that's my issue: To hear someone casting a spell when you're asleep is a straight-up DC 10, which is WAAAAY too easy when it's one of your party members who ALWAYS casts in the morning.

She does all her morning rituals at dawn while he's still asleep, so he's accustomed to hearing her casting. That should increase the DC significantly. But what does "significantly" mean? 10 seems about right, but a DC 20 Perception is pretty easy. Ah, well, we'll try it and see how long it takes him to catch her in the act. The saving throw comes into play already, since Endure Elements does have a Will save, so adding it to the Perception roll seems off.
I suspect the dead giveaway is going to be when he spontaneously starts healing damage. That's hard not to notice. So it may all be a moot point.
But I'd like to have as much fun as I can with this before I get caught.

I like your DC mods for noticing that he's got Endure Elements on himself: He's a barbarian with lots of Survival, so far less likely to notice that it's very pleasant all of a sudden.

Thanks for the ideas!

I know it's a silly thread, but HE'S the one who declared to a rival tribe that he had "done nothing" to earn their respect! Not my fault my 100-year-old aasimar from the Celestial plane is bad at metaphor! :-P

Invest in bluff so even if he DOES notice, you can explain things away.

"Sorry, did I wake you? I think I stuttered that last time around the spell didn't take, looks like I need to try again, just ignore me, I can't focus when I'm being watched..."

"What do you mean it's too comfortable on top of this mountain? Clearly you're just too tough to notice the cold. In fact, I think you're as tough as you are brave. Who's a brave man? You are!"

Get a metamagic rod of Silent Spell. I'm sure if you ask your DM nicely and only use it for these hijinx, maybe it'll be included in the next loot drop :)

Also, maybe instead of casting it while he's sleeping, arrange other things to cover the sound. "Hey BSF how's your battle cry go again *abracadabra* no, no, the other one *hocus pocus*, thanks, I'm just going to do some dishes *clang clang clatter clangalakazamclang."

By the way, your aasimar isn't 100. It's been confirmed that the ages for the planar races were listed incorrectly and they follow normal human lifespans.

GM permission. She was on the Celestial Plane for the first 102 years of her life, and the GM agreed that she didn't age past her age of maturity while there. So she hit about 18, stopped aging, and continued existing for the next 84 years in a state of semi-stasis.

Now that she's on the Material Plane she's aging normally, as per the rule updates.

EDIT: And considering the other house-ruled modifications to aasimar in this campaign (no Darkvision, no resistances), I think asking for an increased lifespan wasn't a big ask.

Cool, cool, I just wasn't sure if you were aware of the clarification that was made.

OK. You guys are awesome.

What else can she pull on him?

Secret Bless spells while he's trying Skill checks? Bull's Strength while he's performing feats of strength?

Let's turn this into, "Silly things a Life Oracle can do to make a barbarian's life better without his noticing that she's doing them..."

Unfortunately, bull's strength comes with a range of touch, so you'd have to do this one before your buddy attempts the feat in question. Maybe a "go get 'em!" styled butt-slap, or a friendly hand on the shoulder?

Don't forget the -1 per 10 feet modifier. Cast from as far away as range, visibility and line of effect allow. Or Metamagic Silent it and then there is no check at all.

I'm not sure you even need to worry about perception. Just lie about what you're casting, or don't even admit you are casting at all, just say you are offering up a generic prayer. Unless Thrud there is trained in spellcraft he hasn't got a hope in hell of knowing whether you are telling the truth or not. Get in the habit of occasionally slapping Thrud on the back in a friendly way, and you can get over the touch difficulty problem.
