Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
Poke poke! Anyone there still, or did it die?
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Same here.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Apologies. I have been dealing with the fallout of my choices and am mostly back on my feet. I'd like to restart this Wednesday, but I think I may narrate our way through this next bit so we can get back on track.
Are there any thoughts on recruiting anyone else? We have a 4 man party now, but another player may be of use.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Good to hear that, GM! :) I'm ok to recruit someone else. The good thing is that we have all the areas covered.
Caesare Montoya |
Same here. On I side note we have a Wizard, Cleric Rogue in disguise, Fighter in disguise. So we have the good old party. Only thing that could really shine would be paladin or bard ... or skald ;-)
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Indeed :) A paladin could be a wise choice.
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
You're assuming a Paladin could get along with a half-vampire who's more interested in honor than whether the kiddies get fed. :)
If I might suggest, since we have the basics covered, it might be good to get someone who is doing something unusual that doesn't cover what we already have.
Bard (most any type), Druid (Nature magic, shapeshifting), Shaman (or any of the other new classes) might also work well given the story line so far.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
A ranged shaman ;)
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
If it's too much trouble, you could just let us bring our characters up to WBL out of Estvarian's stash. :)

Almost done here. Monday is deadline for my bachelorthesis, and while I do need those posts to not fall into a major burnout, my mental flexibility, especially for numbercrunching, is limited. My shoppings are almost done, let us continue, and I will sneak in a post every day.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
I will be at the GardenCon in Geneva from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th August, with little time to post. Four days of PFS, yay!
I'll try to check my games on the morning but please bot the prof if needed!
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Hi there, folks!
Are we gonna let this game die? I'd really like to go further in the game :)
I just moved out, so I must admit that I was kind of glad this game didn't move for some weeks, as these days have been crazy.
Were you waiting on us, GM?
cheers!
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
Risbeth is out dealing with the werewolf, so I've not been able to post anything.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Just a little head's up to let you know that the next days (until Monday evening) will be hectic for me.
I'll try to post at least once a day but I'm not sure to make it. Please bot the prof if you need to.
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
Risbeth pokes the GM about the question she asked in OOC comment in the game thread.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
GM snores and makes grunting noises.
I need to read over the dhampir racial information. I expect to do so over this weekend. Work week's been busy.
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
The information doesn't say one way or the other, that's the problem.
The new FAQ about their abilities says that they are alive, but react to negative energy as if undead. That means if you target undead with a channel, a dhampir takes damage, even though they are alive. So it seems for targeting, they are undead. That means it can go either way. Either they are undead that are marginally alive, or they are alive who are so undead that they react as dead. Either way, the whole 'detect living' that mindless undead have has just as much a likelyhood to work as not work, so it's really up to the GM. The ways I've seen it handled are :
A) They are alive, and get the worst of all worlds, they get hit when people target undead, but everything undead considers them alive.
B) They are alive, but because they are targetted as undead by channel, they show up as undead to detect undead and other mindless undead consider them undead.
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
Before I file Risbeth away again, just to confirm, the death effect did not stem from Negative Energy? I only ask because it was described as black energy.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Ok, then. I didn't know that Raise Dead couldn't bring back the characters that suffered from a death effect.
The question is: will we be able to gather 20'000 gp?
Or shall we find a church of Sarenrae around?
I sense the lack of interest in Risbeth after having died from a stupid save or die spell. But that's the game. I'm not exceptionally thrilled as well myself. Can you (Caesare and Sonny) try to work things out a little faster to see if there's a possibility for us to come back?
Risbeth (aka mdt) is by far the most active character in this game and is our engine, our locomotive, as we say in french. This game without mdt would be mostly inactive.
So, that what I think: either Sonny and Caesare rock the land as soon as you can to find something to bring Risbeth and the prof from the deads or the game will suffer and slowly die ironically.
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
I will admit a distinct lack of enthusiasm at this point in time. I have never liked SOD's, and Pathfinder went a long way toward removing them from the game at lower levels, making them SoS instead. I honestly don't have a lot of enthusiasm for continuing a game where at random the GM will throw out a TPK that depends on a flip of the coin, not anything the character's did or didn't do.
As a GM, I never use SoD unless the PCs do first (and warn them).
At higher levels, 15+, it's not that big a deal, it's more of a gold tax. But at this level of the game, there's not really a lot of ways around it that aren't basically GM fiat and hand waving. Which would be better served, IMHO, fiat/hand waving the SOD away in the first place.
Just my $0.02 worth.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Indeed. Well now what is done is done. We knew we went to fight against a big bad necromancer. That's a usual tactics of necromancers to use death effect spells. Also this spell had our names on it since "Circle of Death" can't affect creatures whose HD is 9 or higher...
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, I feel a lack of enthusiasm but I still want to go on playing this game. I like my character, I like our party as it is and I like the scenario. :)
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
I honestly don't know how many more times I could have typed NECROMANCER without also typing NECROMANTIC SPELLS. The guy just admitted, bragged even, of wanting to bring the setting's most evil dude back from the dead.
Circle of Death. You may read the spell if you'd like. I don't aim for TPKs, but I also don't aim to softball the challenge. You rolled poorly. Your character died. If you want to walk away, good bye. I wish you well. If you want to complain about the challenge after you walked through the werewolves, I don't know what to tell you.
I have dealt with character deaths in the past by offering the player a choice: attempt to raise your character or try a new one. Sonny is the literal priest of a goddess who answers his prayers. If he asks, she will send an avatar who will offer you a deal: if you want the characters raised, there will be a price. Price will be determined via roleplaying and won't be gold pieces; it will require you to roleplay.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
Wow that's more than I expected.
Thanks, GM :-)
Risbeth Von'Hogmede |
The problem is, we had the warning much to late to prepare. We only have one person who could cast the one spell that gives you any real defense is Death Ward. Which our cleric could have prayed for, if we'd had a day or two warning. Coming across the necromancer in the city already, we had no way for him to get Death Ward. Even with Death Ward, we'd have still lost Risbeth and the Prof.
I don't mind my character dying if I do something dumb, or I make decision to put myself in harms way to protect others. But random 'roll a die and get 15+ or die' is pretty sucky as a game goes. It's not about difficult, if you'd thrown 8 people at us and I died, oh well. This is about everyone having fun, challenge is part of that fun, flipping a coin and 'oh well you die' is not part of the fun.
And afterward hand waving it with the goddess handing out a free resurection to be in debt isn't really fun either. It's basically negating the entire statement that you won't 'go easy on us' because you really are, you're negating the effects of your own SoD spell. Which really comes down to a situation where the GM saps all the fun out of the game, and then makes up for it by GM fiat afterward.
I'm think I'm done. Thanks all, had fun while it lasted.
Sonny Wright |
Sorry for the delay. I was trying to come up with an appropriate prayer. It was nothing lengthy. Never believed it was the amount of words said but the heart behind them.
I am in to the bitter end. I'm guessing we will be looking for a new tank though. We'll see what comes next.
Prof Augustus Tournesol |
I don't know anyone who could join us. My IRL pathfinder friends are currently playing Carrion Crown and I'm GM'ing. :)
As for the level up, I'll try to make it either today or, most likely, tomorrow afternoon (Europe).
If we don't find a tank, the prof might build one (craft construct anyone?) xD
Jing the Bandit |
Yosh, it is I...a person. Hello and salutations, Sonny has reached out to some players in other campaigns and I have answered the call of expressing interest. I have seen that we need a tank and have been trying to wrap my brain around character creation without knowing anything about Carrion Crown other then what is provided in the Player's guide.
I see that we are building a 9th level character...I believe 20 point buy but other then that I have been smashing my face against the character profiles to attempt to come up with the character creation rules.
I have built a preliminary character based on what i have seen...that said, I shall proceed to list the books and paizo pamphlets I've used thus far to make sure everything is kosher.
Books: Ultimate Combat, Animal Archive, Advanced Player's Guide, Blood of Fiends, Faiths of Purity.
Let me know if anything thus far sounds bad. I am looking at currently using two archetypes that don't screw with each other...(Mad Dog and True Primitive to be exact.Barbarian Tank is my thoughts.CG of course)
Caesare Montoya |
I think we overused the word tank. More like someone to keep nastys away from the prof and can deal some decent damage. Sonny is a superb healer, the prof our arcane support and me the skillmonkey using reach. We lack the one who can deal melee damage and take a few hits.
As we are in ustalav the more victorian normal the less obvious. But that is for sure not mandatory
