Riding Skill with Various Mounts

3.5/d20/OGL

The Riding skill states "You can ride a mount, be it a horse, riding dog, griffon, dragon, or some other kind of creature suited to riding."

I've always had the players select what type of mount they are trained in, be it horses, griffons, dragons, etc. If a character want to learn to ride a different type of mount I had them re-select the Riding skill for that particular type of creature (mount).

Thus a character who could ride horses, griffons and dragons would have three separate Riding skills, at different ranks.

I'm curious as to what everyone else does, please tell.

Hi Eileen!!!!

I do not separate riding skill by creature type. You either know how to ride and keep your balance to a degree, or you do not.

Hi Freehold DM, nice to see you. Thanks for your input. I'm getting interested in the next edition and so I'm dusting off old characters. Right now I'm re-writing them for 3.5, thus the question above. When I was a teenager playing 1st edition, my brother DM'd and for some strange reason I had non-weapon proficiencies for Riding air-borne Pegasus, another for griffon and another for hippogriff which he gave out as free, though I have no recollection of riding such creatures.
