In a pinch, you could buy a blank flip mat and cut it up.
What I really want is something like Colorforms that you can stick to flip mats. Monsters, NPCs, and terrain alike--oh, and area of effect shapes. I.e., something easy to use, easy to store, and doesn't slide/fall off the mat.
Magnetized maps would work too but I'd rather something that might work with the existing map line.
I loved the idea of D&D's map tiles, with the different size and shape terrain cut outs, but while the cardboard was nice and sturdy, it takes up space and slides every which way.

Check these out. This is the sample pack, but they have tree packs, boulder packs, water packs, etc.

Non-stick shelf liner works wonders for sliding tiles of all types. It's pretty cheap too.
