Diabolist Entry Requirements Clarification...

As the title says. I am slowly crafting a character working towards Diabolist and I am wondering something. The -general- concenses is that in order to enter Diabolist you need to not only have lesser planar binding or lesser planar ally on your class skill list, but also must be able to cast it using your own spell slots AND have the gold to pay for the services of the conjured devil. This would mean that, for a wizard, the minimum level of entry would be 11. However, on the additional resources page, it states that to take Diabolist you must have the spells on your class spell list, which, if taken at face value/RAW would mean that you could enter the class as soon as level 5 provided you had a level(s) in a class that had lesser planar binding or lesser planar ally on it's class spell list and the requisite skill ranks. Thus, my first question is which of these two scenarios is the case? Do you need to actually be able to cast the spell, as per the forum posts, or do you just need it in your class spell list as per the additional resources updates?

Also, I have another question. If it is the former, and you do need to be able to cast the spell and have the gold, is it only clerics who need to have the gold? I ask because Planar Binding, unlike planar ally does not require any gold to have the bound fiend perform services. Instead, it simply requires a charisma check. Thus, I am wondering, since only planar ally demands any gold to make the fiend do something does the gold requirement only apply to clerics or are wizards, sorcerers and other arcanists forced to have the gold as well just as if they where a cleric with planar ally despite the fact their requisite spell, planar ally, has no gold piece requirement for service?

If anybody could clear these concerns up I'd be grateful.

I'll answer the first question and let someone else get the other. You need to be able to cast the spell and have it on your spell lists.

I'm unsure on the second, as I haven't really looked into it.

There's also a long thread here that might have answers to any other questions you have.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. I figured as much since I read through some of those posts earlier but I just wanted to be sure. As for the gold, I could not find any answers to that in any other threads since nobody every really brought the topic up, hence why I asked it here. Logically, the gold requirement should only apply to clerics since, as stated only planar ally requires gold for extended service and thus in a logical world arcanists, who would not need to pay gold normally, shouldn't have to in this case either.(I mean, to be technical even if every class "must have the gold for the service" the GP amount for an arcanist would be "0gp" since it is assumed they would be using lesser planar binding, which has no GP requirement for any service, even extended.) However, you never know with rulings like this and thus I would appreciate the clarification on the gold thing before I decide to blow my gold on items and realize I need it to enter the class despite the fact I'm an arcanist entering with lesser planar binding.

the additional resources document is explicitly clear on this PrC now.

You must pay the gold for planar ally, I suggest getting a lemure, or other very few HD devil to spend the minimum amount of gold. Planar Binding casters need not pay the gold cost.

Prestige Class: Diabolist; to qualify for the diabolist prestige class, lesser planar ally or lesser planar binding (or a similar spell) using one of your own prepared spells or a daily spell slot, and the spell must be on your class spell list

Ok. Thanks for the heads up. Glad to know I DON'T have to pay the gold since I plan on going into Diabolist through wizard and thus will be paying a lot of gold for 10 levels just to get spells. Also, I assume you need to physical cast the spell, not just be able to cast it, and if so must your DM record on your chronicle sheet that you cast the spell before you take your first level in Diabolist?

actually that part is hand-waved, since it's repeatable it's assumed to be done in downtime.

but sorc's need it as a spell known.

Dark Archive

Yeah, but since I am not entering as a sorc I don't need to worry about that. While being forced to buy all your spells while leveling in diabolist kinda bites, wizard overall is mechanically superior to sorc for Diabolist and I prefer prepared casting to spontaneous. Also, Infernal Binder and Diabolist is a match made in heaven and there is already an infernal bloodline Sorc from House Thrune among the society by the name of Aspexia so I want to enforce a -bit- of diversity among the society's members of house Thrune...

Yeah, the only thing for wizards is "in your spellbook"
