The Totemist

Alternate Classes: Druid and Summoner

A totemist is an arcane spellcaster with an affinity for animals. Forming a special bond with an animal companion, the totemist can evolve them as she grows in power.

Basic Rundown: Start with the Summoner class and get rid of the Eidolon. Instead, choose a druid animal companion (see Core Rulebook page 53/54). Treat the companion as an Eidolon base form and progress them using the Eidolon progression chart as levels are gained. The animal companion will gain its latter advancements as normal. The animal companion's INT score is always half that of the Totemist.

Get rid of the Summoner's Summon Monster Spells and spell-like abilities and replace them with the Summon Nature' Ally Spells of the same level.

I realize there will be a few tweaks needed to balance this out. Any ideas are welcome.

Looks good in principle. You'd have to compare base values for animal companions and eidolons, and probably remove some of the eidolon's starting evolutions to make up for that animal companions have more specials than base eidolons.

Spells would also need looking at. Perhaps allow a choice of spells from both the druid and summoner lists.

@Arcanemuses: Yep, the MCA threads are good, but you could go right to our MCA wiki and check out Elghinn Lightbringer's Beast Summoner that does exactly what you have described.
