Today, sometime between 13:40 and 14:35 Pacific time, I will be presenting Pathfinder Online at the Who's Got Game Innovation Showdown at GamesBeat 2013.

There will be live coverage.

Each company will have 4 minutes to present. The order has not been shared with me, but we are likely to go first as we're the first company on the website list.

Our presentation has 2 minutes of business theory, and 2 minutes of video produced from in-game footage of Milestone 3.

Tune in and watch me explain why the Age of the Sandbox is dawning!

Reminder set... :)

Military time? We're ignorant Americans I don't know what's going on?

OK... so 1:40 PM PST... right? I think that's right. Looking forward toward it Mr. Dancey.

I think so.

This link should give you a countdown to the start of it; http://goo.gl/4rmgGX

Let us know when/where the footage is archived. I can steal a moment from work to post, but not for watching a video stream.

I want two minutes of video HashTagExcited.

Definately military... definately American... definately not ignorant ;) At least when it comes to military time. =D

Honestly I would favor the 24 hour clock as opposed to the modern 12 hour. Being raised on the 12 hour it would take some adapting for me, but the 24 hour cycle would make times so much more easy to work with. No more... was that 7 AM or PM?

About to begin...

I just saw Ryan setting up :)

Ooh! Alpha testing in Q1 2014!

Goblin Squad Member

Nice presentation, Ryan. It's a shame it was such a short timeframe that you didn't get a chance to even touch on the PvP nature of the game.

Goblin Squad Member

The number of questions answered in the 4 minute presentation was quite impressive.

All the AM hours stay the same except midnight is 0 hundred. Past noon (which stays 1200) all PM hours are the hour plus 12, so when you see something that's 1300 or greater just subtract 12 from it.

Very potent business presentation angle.

It would have been nice to have fitted in some of the social aspects behind what makes mmorpgs tick, and hence profitable or ask the EVE player judge asked: How to grow bigger? Perhaps beyond the scope of 4 mins.

The Pathfinder footage, especially the earthenworks + perimeter spiked wooden wall was very cool! GJ on Milestone 3!

And G'luck Ryan!

Wow 4 minutes of crazy! Hard to talk for just a few moments. I could take up an hour of their time!

Feel free to take up an hour of ours ;) If public eye is important, I am sure we could storm youtube or something.

When this thread went up, the ceo of wargaming was actually talking about the huge amount of analytics they're doing (about a team of 25 mathematics gurus daily iirc). I suppose EVE does similar behind the scenes work "on what makes people and groups of people tick" and the design changes causing reactions and monitoring that? I was reading about these guys: ninjametrics recently also.

I think THAT is a really good idea.

Missed it as I was working... is it up anywhere?

You'll have to forward to ~3:23:00 to see Ryan.

Strangely I can't get audio...still, the settlement is huge and beautiful! Can't wait! Looks like a lot of fun!

And gathering resources in the River Kingdoms will be much tougher than here in Agon. Sure there are ganker and harvester hunters here, but it will be really tough in PFO because in addition to the threat of PvPers there will be monsters angry at your party's activities! That'll be extra challenging!

Sovereign Court Goblin Squad Member

The audio is definitely on the quiet side for me too. I need volume cranked up to max on my laptop just to hear the girl ask Ryan questions.

Goblin Squad Member

Looking better every peek Guys!

I liked the music, Ryan.

Looks like we can even see some example quests in the video (in the top right window during gameplay).

A couple of quests (?) are listed, for example at 3:26:15 you can read the text:

"The Ripping Chains goblin tribe is attacking!
Goblin Scouts Killed: 0/30
Stolen Supplies Recovered: 0/30
Recover Stolen Supplies
Kill Goblin Scouts

The Ripping Chains warchief is on the prowl!
Defeat Warchief Raask: 0/1
Find and defeat Warchief Raask"

I expect that's the status of an Escalation, rather than traditional Quests.

The winner::

The plush toy game

That's some fast talkin'! Good presentation, and you got out the essentials in that small window.

Could be. Hopefully a dev can comment on this.

Goblin Squad Member

I was wondering what that was my resolution was too poor. "Help/persuade Chieftain Goblin attack x" quest is the one I'll take!

On the topic of large dev teams in software projects such as themeparks is it another problem that the more coders the more overhead cost of organising and communicating between them, which probably increases the budget even more? I mean big IT projects have histories of going over budget don't they?

I especially appreciate the use of the double-colon "::" :)

Sovereign Court Goblin Squad Member

Starting to think that Nihimon must be correct about it being an escalation. Earlier in the video only the first part ("The Ripping Chains goblin tribe is attacking!") shows, so that hints at an escalation progressing. Either that or the character picked up a second quest along the way.

Great vid! Animation(the character and the environment seem to blend together very well when the character is running) looks great.

I hope you create bigger trees, like old trees, to have variety in the landscape. Now all the trees are around ten years old and that really isn't exciting and it looks also dull when your on a palisade or start looking up. So plant bigger trees with bigger trunks and trees that are also higher to make the landscape more alive. Maybe the trees don't have to be as big as in Ashenvale, but close :P. So I'm asking more variety in the sizes of the trees, but especially I want bigger trees with bigger trunks.

I would imagine the old forest (eastern half of Echo Wood at the very least) will have large stands of ancient oaks and other tress that have been there for hundreds (or thousands) of years. There are a number of druidic groups that are secreted away in the woods tending the forest and creating potions and salves from the plants. They would most definitely protect the woods they call home, so yes, your forest will most certainly look older when you move away from a freshly planted settlement.

Cant watch the video on Ipad, Iphone or Lumia 920 devices.

I could watch it on my Surface Pro but even at max volume I can barley hear it (the female judge has some good questions).

Loved the video of the past MMMO models, the people running, the look at the armors/clothes and the wide shots of the settlements! Well worth the 4 mins, I am emailing all my friends the link! :)

Goblin Squad Member

Ryan,

when you answered the judge's question about learning from EVE's design error in the entry-barriers for new players, I thought you might frame your answer with the higher order issue that this is one of many lessons learned from EVE's design errors (and successes).

I think PFO is analogous to Blizzard and Sony pre-WOW: someone hit gold, but as innovators made some serious missteps, and second player in the market refined the gold part to capture a dominant share of the marketplace. Just like WOW is EQ done right, PFO is aiming to be a kind of EVE done right.

CEO, Goblinworks

@Mbando - you're exactly right. That would be a better response.

You feel free to steal that as you continue to evangelize ;)
