Psionics without a system

Homebrew and House Rules

I don't know if this has been thought of but..

I propose a Psionic rule set that is in fact class feature based. what if psionics was just a fancy way of casting spells? check this...

magic:

psi cast spells drawn from both arcane and divine spell list similar to the witch, and similar to the witch a psi has its spell list at the end of its class features. also certain spells have a symbol that denotes them as augmentable (see below)

psychic reservoir:

psi have a pool of points like a magus' arcane pool or a ninja ki pool with roughly the same amount of points a psi can use these points to activate psionic surge (see below) or activate an augmentation (see below).

psionic surge:

by spending psychic reservoir points a psi can boost a spell by his surge die which increases in potency every two levels like sneak attack damage i recommend d4

augmentations:

every three levels a psi gains an augmentation essentially a chosen ability like an alchemist discovery or a magus arcana. these augmentations can be applied to spells in a psi spell list that has the augmentation symbol (see above).

-------------------

these are standard class features that the three base psi can have (excluding soul knife) and with a few modifications could compliment spellcasting as seen as psionics.

the psion would have features similar to the wizard schools. the wilder would get the sorcerers treatment. and the psychic warrior a blend of psi and magus.

Good idea. I always find it strange that Divine magic and Arcane magic share some spells and casting schools, but that Psionic class have their own, strange and (on my opinion) unbalanced power list.

Wilders even looks like a kind of sorcerer - bard hybrid in the way their power is explained (ecstasy, feelings, rage, etc.). When can easily turn psion in funny archetypes or new class sharing the same spell and school with other classes, with a few unique effect thanks to psi surges and augmentations.

my idea is augmentations are additional effects that customize a spell on the fly ie 'obscuring cloud' could add 1d4 rounds of concealment to the area of effect like a cloud of smoke from a fireball or evaporating myst upon discovery of an illusion effect. also think of both benefits and penaltys to spells or inposing conditions or altering energy types. certain augmentations can only be gained at higher levels because of their power and also they consume psychic reservoir points as apropiate to how powerful they are, like a 1-3 range. this system coupled with surges makes the the reservoir pool on par with other classes that use points. also when i said that arcane and divine spells both being available to psionics is because certain divine spells compliment psi for having a broad spectrum of utility powers. basically a psi spells are treated as neither being arcane or divine like an artifer they however are a manisfestation of the psi will but use the existancing rules of spellcasting. a dispay could be added conditional to a spells spellcasting components. also when i stated other classes as treatments like the wizard to the psion i meant that a psion casted spells like a wizard and had its six disiplines could mirror a wizards schools. same as a wilder would mirror a sorcerers spellcaster and bloodlines. and a psychic warrior could get the magus treatment. these variations for psionics being class specific features makes rebuilding psionic from the ground up as classes uber versatile. and the soul knife could get extra attention now that this testament could compliment it with minor spellcating like a ranger.

i'm also thinking that the supplement could contain a small retenue of new spells that draw on the most iconic psi powers. sorta rehashing classic psi powers as spells.

since they would be in traditional spell format other classes could have limited access to certain of the spells if they complimented the overall theme of those spellcasting classes not psionic.

The DSP stuff works pretty much like that already.
Points per day, limit on how many you can spend per activation based on your level, and so on. Even the psi schools, if you go look at the psion's disciplines.

The augmentations are half built in and half as feats [the really strong stuff] but in both cases you have limits: you expend focus [you need an action to recover focus] to use a meta, and all of the 'spells' only scale by putting in more points.

While a wizard gets to do 10d6 at 10th level, a Psion has to pay the extra points for his energy ball to actually hit as hard, equal to casting a fifth level spell in resource-use.
