Running RotRL soon, need advices.

Rise of the Runelords

I will start this campaign soon.

The party will be 6 players. I don't know their classes yet, as I did not determined which classes allowed.

Medium or slow xp advancement ? Was thinking of adding modules. Not sure yet.

Should I go with a 15pt buy or 20pt buy ? I was thinking maybe go with 18.

Which races fit better for player characters to make in the campaign ?
For cavalier orders, which ones would fit in the campaign ?

Fast advancement. Six players will slow down advancement anyway.

18 points sounds okay.

Don't allow Drow Elves. They haven't been sighted above ground yet so only elves know they exist.

Don't micromanage. use 20pt, it's easier. Before banning stuff, ask them all what they want to play. Let them discuss amongst themselves what roles they want. THEN nix things you don't like.

- Medium advancement if you're going to put in a lot (you're dividing xp by 6) otherwise fast advancement or just level them when they need it.

I don't recommend Drow (same reason as Tangen101) and goblinoids (big bads around Sandpoint) UNLESS you or a player have a specific plot hook you want to use (for the goblinoids).

Classes? anything. Sandpoint is place where people go to not be found. HOWEVER, if you're not ready for it, a gunslinger will be a shock for you past the 1st module and definitely at the 3rd module.

Do NOT suddenly pull out houserules in mid-game.

Everything Tangent101 said. I would stick to the core races. I'm actually running rotrl right now, and I just did Players guide and advanced players guide, with items, traits and archetypes from the Legends of Varisia book. So far it has worked quite well.

Liberty's Edge

Well, APs don't occur at set years or times (Reign of Winter notwithstanding) so it's quite doable to have a drown in RotRL and just assume the related AP occurred prior to the start of the Anniversary Edition.

I'm allowing all open races from Pathfinder Society play into my game, so there can be tieflings, tengu, and aasimar.
As the adventure progresses I'm opening more races as available, unlocking them as it were. Once we finish the first chapter goblins will become available. I'm considering hammering together an ogrekin race for after Ch3.

Actually, while RotRL doesn't have a schedule, it does have a rather well-defined start date. The Swallowtail Release marks the first day of autumn, which some have placed at 23 Rova. That means as the game goes on, Varisia should be getting colder.

I have 6 players, so here's what I did (We're almost to the end of chapter 4, btw).

I don't use XP; instead, I tell the players when to level as needed (I usually stay about 1 level behind the advancement blocks at the beginning of each chapter).

I used 15 point buy for the PCs. The APs are designed with 15 point buy in mind.

For races, I allow all the CRB races, plus aasimar and tiefling. Also, for this campaign, I stipulated that each PC had to be from a different race (so we don't have another all-human party). I allowed any of the base classes except Gunslinger.

I don't any input on Cavaliers.

Hope that helps!
