Paypal

Just recently got back into RPG, and Pathfinder. We are about to start the Skulls and Shackles AP, so I went to buy the paper mines for module 1 and found that you don't take Paypal.

Why?

I have no desire to get into debit/credit cards, and I can't get the paper minis elsewhere by the looks.

Big downer, as there were a few things I was looking at maybe getting in PDF in future.

If you live in the US, Paypal has an option to make a one time use credit card number that draws directly from your paypal account (looking at their account, that ability may have been suspended for their paypal debit card which does the same thing). I don't think this is available in all countries, however.

They've said the requirements placed on them by PayPal are not compatible with their base subscription model.

Here's Vic talking about it from a couple years back. It's been brought up every now and again, and it really always come back to this same issue.

Maybe PayPal could be a payment option for individual profucts but not subscription or other ongoing things?

We'd have to limit it more than that; ultimately, the number of products that we could ship under PayPal's spec is a relatively small percentage of the total number of items we offer. This would lead to frustration when people check out, as we'd be forced to communicate unexpected things like "If you want to pay with PayPal, you need to remove [list of items] from your cart." I think the dissatisfaction and annoyance generated for customers by that would not be worth the additional sales opportunities that it would present.

Vic, would it solve the problem with PayPal if the shopping process with PayPal worked in the following way:

When someone makes purchase through Paizo shop and selects to use PayPal the shop interface converts the purchase into equal amount of gift cards being added to the buyers account (of course it would require appearance of big note describing the process with checkbox for "I agree to the following way of purchase" - possibly with option to agreeing to it in account settings to avoid seeing it every purchase paid through PayPal).

The transaction with PayPal is done immediately as buying gift cards of equal value and adding them to the user's account - would it solve the problem with delay between making order, sending order and drawing money from the buyer's account, which, IIRC was the primary reason for PayPal transaction method incompatibility with yours?

Part of the legal disclaimer received before purchase would be note that due to method used the money will be withdrawn immediately and in case of canceling the order before shipping it won't be returned and instead kept on Paizo account as positive balance.

Food for thoughts about possible solution.

You have an interesting idea (though instead of redesigning the checkout process, I'd just say that the only thing you could buy with PayPal would be gift cards). I'll see if PayPal's terms would support that.

THAT would be real cool.

Yes, but it would still require buyers to know that the only thing they can buy with PayPal are gift cards... What would be best would be a button in checkout process [buy equal value of gift cards with PayPal] that would save the current transaction and open a separate transaction for gift cards of equal value payable with PayPal (with possibility of increasing the purchase beyond the value of already selected merchandise). It would be nice if the process could be automated so once the authorization is confirmed and you receive the money from PayPal the initial transaction is automatically completed (i.e. the gift codes are added to balance and pay for the selected merchandise).

Of course, being able to buy gift cards with PayPal would be a great start.
