How can you have a monk that uses a shield?
When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a monk loses his AC bonus, as well as his fast movement and flurry of blows abilities.
He is only doing a 3 level dip into monk, I would assume 2 levels of this would be MoMS so he can pick up Crane style the other level just to meet the BAB requirments for HV. Using his shield in his primary hand and offhand free would qualify him for the style use. He wouldnt need Flurry of bows then
I think the better way would be to only take one level in unarmed fighter for the styles, this would be less of a set back for your channeling.
Im assuming your looking for crazy defenses, thats why your after HV shield and crane style.

I didn't say anything about Crane Style. Yes, I know it exists, and could be part of a certain build.
Actually, I guess the 3 levels of Monk comes from the fact that the feat Monastic Legacy requires the monk ability Still Mind.
I forgot to mention this. I assume a multiclass unarmed build like this would center around Monastic Legacy, but its not a requirement.

This build does require a Headband of Inspired Wisdom and a specific order to take the monk and cleric levels.
It allows for some AoO's and 7 uses of channeling negative energy. A worthy NPC, I think.
