Miniature Shape Question

Miniatures

I was looking at some pictures of various people's maps and game tables and I saw some had mixed bases (Circle and Square) and others clearly had one or the other.

It made me curious:

Do you mix base shapes?

Do you care either way?

Do you rebase to make the minis match your collection?

Does your feelings change with the larger monsters?

Please discuss.....

I have a few square holdouts, and some custom irregular shapes for monsters with weird bases.

I prefer the round ones, it's easier to rotate them without causing grid issues. Why rotate them? So the pointy bits don't knock into walls or other creatures.

Yes, on washers.

Sometimes. :)

Mine are mixed, because some of my minis came with round bases, some square, and some are Reaper DHL figs with broccoli bases. I also have a ton of round bases from Warhammer 40K so use those sometimes if I need a spare, but I also have a crapton of my favorite math tiles which are 1 inch plastic squares, so... yeah. And most of my larger bases will be made out of those squares, because I do not want to spend a lot of money on hard to find circles, and because I have the resource of the squares right in front of me (400 come in a box, so I won't run out for awhile).

THAT SAID, I will try for some degree of consistency where possible... a friend of mine asked me to paint the figures for the party we're playing in in his campaign. One of the figures I already had glued to a round 40K base, so I just glued the rest of them to the same kind of bases so the party has unity.

And because of the squares I have, most of my NPCs and monsters more and more are showing up on them, so it may look more consistently squarey over time.

But generally... I don't mind all that much. Some minis I may only ever use once or twice, I'm not going to worry about it. And I also have minis I need to use up. It's not like wargames where you need to use a standard size. My players don't really care and I think some of them probably think I waste my time painting minis at all.

Besides, a lot of times my table will have some fully painted minis, half painted ones, tokens, dice, skittles, and coasters representing monsters so it's all a mish mosh anyway.

Now of course, if I were to ever submit something to a contest or make a diorama I'd make sure everything looked consistent but that's a different situation.

And if I had nothing but time, money, and space, and I was the kind of person who was then thus able to make these massive 3D dungeonscapes with Hirst arts molds and so on, I'd probably put more effort into making the minis look uniform because it would be a whole part of a massive thing. And I've got nothing but props for folks who make that effort. But that is an investment in many ways that I am not willing to make for many reasons.

I like magnetic bases but the only ones I have are square.

All the miniatures I use have round bases. I do have a D&D Miniatures Gargantuan Black Dragon with a square base that I would use if I ever had the opportunity.

Mine depend on what the miniatures primary use is-

Minis for RPGs get round bases.
Warhammer fantasy minis get square bases.

I use whatever fits my game, but I won't rebase a model for an encounter.

Personally I prefer more square bases for larger miniatures (so you don't have those weird corner squares uncovered but still counting as space). For smaller ones, either is ok, but I prefer round ones (they don't catch on each other as much).

No preference. Half of the bases are circle or square, the other half just have what the mini came with (I think of them as shadow bases-wider at the feet narrower in the middle). I will only rebase them if they need a new base to stand up on their own. Or if it is a really cool mini such as Demogorgan for Savage tide where I had to add piles of skulls and a fiendish oyster.

Right now my minis have mixed bases... but the inconsistency is starting to bother me. I am probably going to be choosing a base type soon.

They're mostly square bases right now, so I may end up just sticking with those.

I only use square bases that are only made of metal. Metal minis and metal bases. Consistency is very important to me, and I am BIG on terrain boards, making and playing on them. I have an entire room dedicated to terrain and painting. Occasionally I will base a horse caravan on a cavalry base. Other exceptions include clear resin for gelatinous cubes on square metal bases, and large sized dragons, which use broccoli bases or custom bases made by me.

But, on 25-40mm figures with broccoli bases I place them inside of metal bases with a recess in them so they end up being the same size as the others in scale. :)
The only round bases I have are for various slimes, oozes, and jellies, and are metal as well.

I will never use resin. Metal straight through, but that's me. Otherworld Miniatures for the metal mini freak!
