custom magic items in society?

Scarab Sages 2/5

Can a custom item be made? My idea is an item to cast greater magic fang 1 time per day. The item creation rules call this a 6000 gp goodie. Is there anything written against doing this, assuming one has the gold and prestige?

Dark Archive

Typically if its not on a chronicle or a normal item avalible from prestige, it isnt avalible. I am not sure if the item you mentioned falls in one of those categories or not.

No.... no custom items.... unless it comes from a chronicle. No other exceptions to that rule.... period.

As rule, any and all item-creation feats (such as Scribe Scroll, with Wizards having Spell Focus as a substitute feat instead) are disallowed for PFS. That being said, it probably wouldn't be out of the question to see some sort of special magical item being offered in a non-boon chronicle sometime down the future.

No. There are too many possible exploits in the magic item creation system, as acknowledged in the rules themselves.

The "Additional Resources" section on paizo.com shows that the following are legal for Pathfinder Society:
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Ultimate Equipment
All armor special abilities on pages 114-123, except dastard, are legal for play.
All weapon special abilities on pages 134-149, except unholy, are legal for play.

I tried to find a rule that states custom magical items are illegal but failed to find any. The "Organized Play v6.0 states:

"Beyond the gear noted above, your character is restricted to purchasing additional items from his accumulated Chronicle sheets, or by capitalizing on his fame. Weapons, armor, equipment, magic items and so on that are outside of these lists are not available for purchase at any time."

The Additional Resources state that the armor/weapon special abilities are legal and you can buy magical items up to your Fame Restriction. I don't see how custom weapons/armor using the legal abilities are illegal. Am I missing anything? Is the "As rule" stated by CyrusC2010 just a house rule and using custom items are just "bad form"?

How custom?

You can put together a mithril +1 flaming shocking Gnoll bane great sword. That kind of "customization" is allowed.

You cannot make a cloak of elven kind of protection, even though there are guidlines for making one. Since it doesn't appear on any lists

Guide page 8: Neither the craft feats nor the item creation section of
the magic items chapter in the Core Rulebook are legal for
play. Additionally, except for specific examples cited in
this guide or the Pathfinder Society FAQ, crafting of
mundane items is not allowed in Pathfinder Society.

The customization rules are in the item creation section.

So basically you can use the tables to buy custom items:

Armor (Core Rulebook Table 15-3)
Weapons (Core Rulebook Table 15-8)
Potions (Core Rulebook Table 15-12)
Scrolls (Core Rulebook Table 15-15)
Wands (Core Rulebook Table 15-17)
Select Wondrous (Ultimate Equipment: Bracers of Armor, Bodywrap of mighty strikes, ect.)

But you cannot use the crafting table (Core Rulebook Table 15-29)

Correct. That is because there are no hard rules for creating customized item. That table is only a guideline, and it can result in things that are not balanced by the table's cost.

More or less.

Armor (Core Rulebook Table 15-3)

You can use all legal types, special abilities and materials in any combination.

You can upgrade TO specialty armor but you can't upgrade specialty armor. For example, Your masterwork hide armor can become +1 hide armor. Which can become +2 hide armor, which can become rhino hide armor.

Your rhino hide armor cannot be upgraded to +3 Rhinohide armor, nor can your +3 hide armor be made into +3 rhino hide armor.

Since celestial armor doesn't have a specified metal, there is no upgrade path to celestial armor.

Weapons (Core Rulebook Table 15-8)

See armor.

Potions (Core Rulebook Table 15-12)

All potions are at minimum caster level unless bought otherwise on a chronicle sheet. Be sure not to get a personal only spell (like see invisibility)

Scrolls (Core Rulebook Table 15-15)

Minimum caster level.

Wands (Core Rulebook Table 15-17)

Minimum caster level. Fully charged only unless found on a chronicle sheet.

I want to say no metamagic but i can't find the citation for it.

Why can't specialty armor be upgraded? One of the Golarion specific books allows it. Does PFS have a rule against that, or is it not allowed because PFS sees it as an alternate rule?

5/5 5/55/55/5

PFS has a rule against it. It basically drops out of the inability to determine what the cost of say, +3 rhino hide armor SHOULD be. There;s no way of knowing if all that charge stuff counts as a +1, half a plus, a flat cost, etc.

It's covered in the Stickied "How to Upgrade your Gear in PFS" thread, as well.

You can build towards a specific named magic item, so long as a clear upgrade path exists (for example upgrading a +1 Greatsword into a Frost Brand), but you couldn't continue to upgrade it further, such as making it intoa Vicious Frost Brand.
