Kind of.
As technology moves us away from a world where a man's physical strength was an evolutionary advantage so, men have "lost their edge." The more "information based" world that we are moving into, does appear to play to women's natural strengths.
So rather then men becoming as you put it "an endangered species." Patriarchy is most likely going to diminish and fade away.
This is not as "great" for women as it sounds - certainly not in the short term.

Perhaps its just that all the intelligent attractive ones are openly gay now? :-)This is merely conjecture based on my personal observations. :-)

Bah! I still spend my workday schlepping 70+ lb. boxes!
Although, I do have a lot of female co-workers...
I didn't read the whole thing very carefully, but I did notice that they base most of their findings on sex-based pay discrepancies on managers. 'Cuz you know where men and women make exactly the same amount of money?
That's f$~@ing right, in the UNION!!!!!!!!

Gay men, standard-issue men, we're all part of the men's club.
We've gotta stick together or the weemenz will make us go extinct by removing seats from the clothing section of department stores.

Lord Fyre, are you hinting that people ought to be careful of what they wish for?
Not quite.
What I am saying is that the shift in social & economic power between the genders is making it appear that “men are in decline.” The Comrade Anklebiter’s excellent article shows that things haven’t changed as much as it might appear – but the changes are very real.
From that article:
According to a 2011 poll by the Pew Research Center, 77 percent of Americans now believe that a college education is necessary for a woman to get ahead in life today, but only 68 percent think that is true for men. And just as the feminine mystique exposed girls to ridicule and harassment if they excelled at “unladylike” activities like math or sports, the masculine mystique leads to bullying and ostracism of boys who engage in “girlie” activities like studying hard and behaving well in school. One result is that men account for only 2 percent of kindergarten and preschool teachers, 3 percent of dental assistants and 9 percent of registered nurses.
The masculine mystique is institutionalized in work structures, according to three new studies forthcoming in the Journal of Social Issues. Just as women who display “masculine” ambitions or behaviors on the job are often penalized, so are men who engage in traditionally female behaviors, like prioritizing family involvement. Men who take an active role in child care and housework at home are more likely than other men to be harassed at work.
Do note that the statistics given don’t specify the genders of the sample. Taken at face value, it would lead to the assumption that the definition of “maleness” is being enforced not just by other men, but by women also. I would love to know if more detailed information on this is available.
This seems to support my earlier point that “women are being just as culturally/socially confused as men are.”

When you need a tire changed, or when your immediate halcyon genteel surroundings suddenly and inexplicably are plunged into something more akin to medieval interpersonal relations, we're still nice to have around.
I do, however, often feel like an Edo period ronin.
Until somebody needs a tire changed.
And I remember the old ways.

This......whole "your point is anecdotal ergo moot" thing never ceases to amaze me though.
Why, I was having a conversation with somebody in meatspace just yesterday, and they gave me an anecdotal snippet, some sorta window into their life and experience, and I totally was able to resist explaining to them that their observation had no basis in scientific fact. (Though the thought did occur to me;.....I had a good chuckle over it).
This helped me avoid turning a relaxed social situation into something tedious and blase.
I guess, though, a thread on the internet, on a f*~#ing gaming forum......yeah, those are high stakes. Best to keep the conversation totally based in scientific certainty.
Ephemeral musings just simply won't do.

There's such a thing as a Masculine Mystique? That news to me... Sounds silly. *
*= I'm not trying to be argumentative or what not when I say this. It just does sound silly.
It makes more sense in the context of the article. :)
However, have you heard the term "machismo"? It is the same idea. There really is social pressure on men (especially younger men) to prove their "manliness" (and "straight" sexual orientation).

Some people have called me an effeminate man, and others have mistaken me for a woman online.
I have mixed feelings in regards to that, and I find it funny how some things "manly" just equate to stupid at times.
Then again, I might not be aware of what others consider manly or womanly, since I frown at the "male vs female" mentality as a whole.

My body odur was once described as Masculine mystique. I think she meant to say miasma, oh how we laughed(once she got down wind).

Given that roughly 50% of new births continue to be male and the number of male humans on earth is growing, I see no reason to anticipate their extinction.
Also, men are not a species.
Grand Magus obviously went to public schools.
HEY!!! I was valedictorian from my JHS and Pre-K(The ones you shouldn't be proud of, but what the hell)!!!!!!

Machismo just means you don't kiss or bottom when you haves sex with another man.

That is Grand Magus' go-to insult. I find it rather offensive, but couldn't pass up turning it around on him/her.

Here is an article going the other way. It explains why the advancement of women in the work place seems to have leveled off.
Interestingly, women can be just as “bad” about this as men. This shows how deeply rooted this is in our culture.
And the article provides a scientific way to analyze your own preconceptions.
