I need some new players for our RotR play by email campaign. The group is still in the beginning of the first module (just entered the Glassworks), and currently consists of a human half-Varisian cleric of Shelyn, a human Ulfen ranger, and a halfling bard.
I'd like to recruit people who can write well (so we'll have a fun story to read when it's all done) and who can post at least daily.
We're using the Pathfinder rules, but only Core races and classes (archetypes are probably OK, but please check first). You get two traits, and in addition one of the feats from the Player's Guide if you're a Varisian native. 25-point buy for abilities.
You don't need to post any crunch here, just a concept and character background. If you get picked, there's an RTF sheet to fill out on our Yahoo group under Files. Our website is here.

I'd love to join. Based on your current characters, I'd submit:
Calvio Vakarr, a native Varisian Wizard, who has recently returned from Magnimar where he studied under a local mage. He's a local lad who remembers the Recent Unpleasantness and escaped to Magnimar to put some distance between himself and the memory. Unfortunately his father has just died, leaving him with debts to the Sczarni to pay. So he's come home to settle debts and perhaps put the unpleasant memories behind him. Unfortunately, he's come at a very bad time...

Sounds great, James! Our Yahoo group is linked to on the front page of our website, otherwise here's the link as well.
I'd like for there to be some way to link you to the Heroes of Sandpoint right off, so you can jump into the action. As it is, the town is beginning to panic due to rumors that a goblin invasion has begun, and the Heroes are at the Glassworks, with rumors that there are goblins there, or possibly the Sandpoint Devil.
Perhaps he was on an errand to deliver a scroll to Lord Kaijitsu at the Glassworks for the Sczarni when the current hysteria began, and he finds the doors locked, except for one that's been bashed open... Any other ideas are fine too, of course. :)

I wonder if you would allow the Thassalonian Specialist variant. I'm thinking of making him an illusionist, so it's definitely within his nature to need some sort of rare alchemical ingredient that he could obtain from the Glassworks. Or the scroll delivery would be perfect as well, given his debts and his desire to work them off as soon as possible.
Would it be okay, given his Sandpoint childhood and his Thassalonian yearnings, for him to know Thassalonian as one of his bonus languages?

I'm thinking of an overly curious human rogue who has taken note of the heroes of Sandpoint and followed them to the glassworks. He's in the habit of leaping first and looking second, and never met a piece of magic that he didn't want to take apart, eventually going for Arcane Trickster.
He's a local in Sandpoint, very young and often at odds with the established authorities due to his tendencies toward sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. If that sounds good, I can start fleshing him out a bit more.

Ok, here is the background.
BackgroundLlanathor "Quickfoot" Teladrathil is a young elf of 110 years. His hair is long, black and fine, and his eyes are a striking, tawny-gold color. His parents arrived in Sandpoint just before the Late Unpleasantness five years ago as hired thespians for the Sandpoint Theater. While they managed to avoid the horrible fate of so many at that time, they could not resist a debilitating flux that sent them to an early grave. Without much in the way of options, Quickfoot, as he soon became known as much for his light step as his lack of caution, survived by taking on a mix of odd jobs around the theater from Cyrdak Drokkus and pawning most of his parent's possessions to Ven Vinder at the general store.
Without his parents, and because of his inability to process the grief of their loss on a short timeline, Quickfoot took to wandering the town in the evening hours, his elven sight allowing him to see much more clearly than many of the town's inhabitants. He also took to snooping on many of the more interesting residents, even going so far as to enter into their homes uninvited, through locked doors! He has been verbally chastised by Ven, Crydak and even Sheriff Hemlock, but is often back to his old tricks in less than a month.
Since the arrival of the Heroes of Sandpoint, Quickfoot has become thoroughly enraptured with their deeds, and seeks to get a better look for himself. He has followed the Heroes to the Glassworks unseen, and even now is working up the courage to enter the building behind them.
Quickfoot is curious, impatient and confident. He is quite intelligent, but not very wise and often finds himself in over his head. As the character matures, I think he will become a bit more cautious, and come to see the value of advance planning.
Character ConceptAs I said before, my plan is for Quickfoot to go Rogue 3/Wizard 3 / Arcane Trickster X. If possible I'd like to use the Admixture sub-school of Evocation from the APG with Enchantment and Necromancy as opposition schools. I thought that some of his parents possessions (Spellbook, and a ring which will become his Arcane Focus, and maybe Elven Chain) could be purchased back from the general store when he gets some gold for an organic way for him to begin his arcane studies. If there is another wizard in the party, even better.
Thanks for reading, and I hope I make the group.

I'd be interested. How does PBEM work? I imagine it'd be a similar pace to Play by Post?
You look to be short a strong frontliner, so if you're still recruiting I'd love to throw my hat in. Given that we already have a few Varisians I might play a Dwarf from Janderhoff or from The Lands of the Linnorm Kings (or perhaps he's lived in both). Preferably a fighter, if that'd fit.
He'd be loud, close-minded, thoroughly greedy and overly proud of all things Dwarvish. A stodgy traditionalist to the end. He'd have only been living among humans for a short time and have not entirely settled in. Hopefully this should open up a lot of roleplay opportunities with the rest of the group. :)
As for the hook, let's say I've been travelling south from Kalsgard in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, en route to Magnimar. After felling a Goblin of his own in the attack on the town (a fact he's inordinately proud of) he's been poking around town and asking questions, hoping to take the fight to his racial enemies and rout them out of their nests.
I'm an Australian, but as a student (and on my summer break, no less) I've plenty of time to post. I've played plenty of PbPs here on the boards (I'm currently in two) and have no trouble keeping pace.

Sorry for the wait in replying - it's been a busy day!
Psychicmachinery and Twigs, welcome aboard. While I'd usually prefer to keep our group at 6 players... I guess we could squeeze in one more. So welcome aboard to you too, GrumpyCelt. :)
That closes up the slots we have available for now. Thanks guys!

Yes, it's much like pbp. The main difference is that the posts get sent to your email address (assuming you've chosen that option, of course). Since it would take forever to roll the dice, I do that for the party, so you can focus on roleplaying.

That sounds fine. A dwarf will be welcome in the group. :)

I'll go through my books tonight to get a better handle on it, but he will be a single class cleric, but mechanically balanced as part healer, part meat-shield. He is in "town" for the Shallowtail Festival. And it amuses me to play him against type, he not some rage machine but an huge hippy with a mouth full of fangs. Think more someone who wandered off the set of Sesame Street than something out of a Liefeld comic. Still, when need be, he can layout damage. He just comes from an oddly happy home life.
Grumpy RPG Reviews |
He was either a foundling, found, "adopted" and loved by a Varisian couple, and the Varisians read like half Hollywood gypsies and half Hollywood hippies to me. They raised in a loving environment, albeit with a knowledge the world is a tough, hostile place.
Alternately, he had a horrible background and at some point went through a change, much like Jules from "Pulp Fiction." "I'm trying to be a Shepard."
I like the first version.

Hi there Rotolutundro (I'm hoping correctly spelling that will win me instant favour...)
I'm new to Pathfinder, and to PnP RPGs in general. My town on the south coast of England has no real opportunities to RP with real people, and after years of reading Campaign Settings and designing my own worlds, I want to take the plunge. Reading the Pathfinder Core Rules was what did it, I love the system, and... if you have space, I'd love to be on board.
I'm a prolific writer (my day job is a scriptwriter and theatre director, so it goes with the territory), and though my play experience is limited I understand the rules as well as any other newbie who might come along.
Got space for one more?
Jason Wire |
Great! Well, not great that you lost a person. but great that I can play :D
I'm really happy to try anything at this point, so what's lacking in the group as it stands? Ideally I'd like to stay relatively core as I'm a bit of a newb, so ideally a Fighter/Wizard/Rogue/Cleric, but I don't mind being adventurous if it comes to it.
Your call!
Aaaaaaand how are we going about character builds? I've been reading the APG a bit so am toying with some very light tinkering with alternate features/archetypes, nothing too technical though.

Great! Welcome! I've been enjoying immensely it thus far, though the format is very different from Play by Post or tabletop and is going to take some getting used to. I've also figured out I can reply with my phone, so I'll be posting a lot more. :P
The cast page here might be of some help to you, jasonwire. We have a fighter (myself), a cleric, rogue, ranger, bard and an illusionist wizard. There's room to double up anywhere, and I love having two fighters to a party, but another full caster such as a sorcerer or druid might also be a good fit. Essentially it's the difference between a strong frontline and strong magic support. Also any melee-character you play will benefit from Bergi the bard's inspire courage. What do you think, Meister GM?
If you want any help with your character just post in this thread and I'll be happy to lend what aid I can.
Jason Wire |
Hmmm, you know what, Twigs... You've inspired me to be a little more ambitious. Given you're only proper arcane caster is an Illusionist, I think it might be fitting for a damage-centred Sorcerer to get in on the act.
I'll start generating a character. How are we generating certain things? I know it's a 25 point build, but are we taking the average starting wealth or rolling on the table?
And also, if you're at the Glassworks are we still Level 1?

Ooooooooookay.
Meklok is a Shoanti-born young man, born to a family known for its predilection for sorcerous offspring. His gifts manifested early, though with no great regularity, and were tolerated as a harmless and, one day, possibly useful quirk. Of course, they weren't nurtured, as standing from afar and throwing arcane missiles is no job for a true warrior.
So it went for the first 16 years of the boy's life. Though never a greatly talented warrior, he was brave and endured the trials of life on the Storval Plateau as stoically as the other youths of his clan. Until he turned 16.
From that point, his powers manifested more powerfully. The coloured lights that he often playfully sparked at his fellow youths never did any damage, but on this occasion, tragedy struck. The lights burned into the other boy's chest, hurling him backwards, never to rise. Meklok was beaten for his recklessness, but it was plain this was an accident. The clan accepted, after a long few days of punishment, that he had paid his dues.
One year later, however, his latent arcana manifested itself in a manner the tribe could never countenance. In a typical youthful fight over a particularly buxom girl, Meklok struck his rival across the face. The blow knocked the larger warrior lad to the floor. When he rose again, deep gouges crossed his cheek where a bruise should have been. One glance at Meklok's hands showed horrendous talons curving out where his fingers should be.
That night, as the clan leaders debated what to do with the wayward boy, Meklok was confined to his tent and charged upon his honour not to leave it. The debate was not straightforward. Though a direct and sometimes brutal people, the Shoanti recognised that these things were not by Meklok's design. Could they allow the boy to live whilst also assuring the safety of their people?
They never got the chance to decide. Convinced he would be killed, his mother (who carried a faint Abyssal taint herself) slit a hole in the back of his tent and spirited him away to her birth tribe. From there, she gained supplies and mounts before fleeing for the lowlands, always only hours ahead of the spreading news of her demonic child.
Eventually, they settled in Riddleport. Here, where sensible men don't ask about backgrounds, the mother and son survived and, to an extent, prospered. Meklok learnt to use his gifts with more precision, moulding his coloured lights into effective weapons. Though safer than back on the plateau for the family, power groups in the city soon started attempting to coerce the young sorcerer into serving their interests.
The answer to how his mother had been earning money to feed them both (a topic avoided in the family hovel) was answered when she was found dead, murdered by one of her clients. Now 22 and devoid of any reason to stay in the city, Meklok struck out for the south, to Chelian-owned territories, reasoning that Magnimar was the closest place to find both a living and an arcane mentor for his now-slowing progress. When he passed through Sandpoint, he learnt of two intriguing things; the upcoming Swallowtail Festival, and the presence of Brodert Quink, an eccentric academic reputed to know tales of the sorcerous empire that onces covered Varisia.

The site Twigs linked to (thanks Twigs!) has the character generation information under Rules. Everyone is still first level.
It seems it's all full but if a spot opens up, I'd love to play. I have a concept in mind for a Master of Many Styles Monk (archtype from APG)
I think I'll keep the group at the number it's at now, but if anyone drops out I'll post here again. :)

Eh? Ninja?? I am confused :(
Hmmmm, ok... Two ideas come to mind. One more realistic, but possibly already being used by someone from what I read above, and one more flavourful but very much dependent on your say-so.
Both ideas start:
After a brief meeting with Quink, the old gnome is interested in talking to the Shoanti youth. His abyssal taint and Shoanti blood are as tantalisingly likely to be an indicator of Thassilonian heritage as he's likely to study in the near future.

I think we'll go with the first option, since the tunnels are actually supposed to be a fairly well-kept secret. (Btw, Quink is human, not a gnome.) He's not the only one to be sent to the Glassworks on an errand today, but hey, coincidences happen.
At the moment the town is panicking - word is there's a goblin invasion, though no townsfolk have actually seen a goblin if you press them to admit it. All the doors to the Glassworks are locked but one, which has been battered down with an axe.
