~ Art of Defence ~

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

One of the Martial Arts I'm interested in is the various forms of the Art of Defence. There are several European Styles and at least one Asian style -- Tai Chi Quan (which you see in Chinese Martial Art Fantasy movies -- there might be thousand different Kenjutsu styles that are just as fluid).

All of them use the Weapon Finesse feat or Finesse Fighter feat as a base. It was really easy to build the martial art using the Martial Arts Companion for Rolemaster the Standard System. For the d20 system, it's tougher, because there isn't an incentive to rp combat in D&D. Still, shall we try it?

Art of Defence common feats:
Combat Expertise
Finesse Fighter
Weapon Finesse
Weapon Focus
Improved Critical
Dodge
Mobility
Improved Feint
Greater Feint
Improved Trip
Greater Trip
Improved Disarm
Greater Disarm
Dazzling Display
Vital Strike
(why Vital Strike? Because pictures in one Art of Defence manual show one naked combatant poking his rapier through the eyes, the heart, the lungs, and the gut of his equally naked foe).

All the various styles are arranged in regions.

English, German, Spanish, French, Italian are those styles that come to mind; and Tai Chi Quan.

All the styles of the Art of Defence use light weapons. The Tai Chi sword is a long sword that is exceptionally light and durable, for example. And the rapier, foil, and sabers are lighter than the Arming Sword.

How would you arrange these feats to replicate the Art of Defence?

(Note: I left off Whirlwind Attack because a real Art of Defence master who teaches actors who play Jedi in fan films can attack any whirlwinder the moment his back is turned. It only works in movies.)
