Chronicle Sheet Reporting: Trail Rations and Water

Silver Crusade

Hail Pathfinders,

This may seem very non-issue to some, but as Society rules mention that the core rules require players to follow them, I believe it warrants some discussion.

Trail rations, while only 5 sp/day and waterskins being 1 gp in cost, has me wondering about each scenario I go on. Excluding Absalom-based PFS adventures, unless it is assumed we don't stop in to a tavern or watering hole in that part of the town.

The chronicle sheet requires that we report any items bought or sold. Are necessities for living such as trail rations and water (based on days within adventure or time spent traveling)required to be included in these costs? This will be exceptionally important in regards to Season 3 when we start traveling across the planet to Tian Xia and the like. But even in the Inner Sea region, that is still many, many days travel by land and sea. Food and water are necessary on such journeys. The food costs stated above start to stack up fast.

My purpose for bringing this up is not to add another step to the wrap up of a scenario, but it's something that's been nagging me since I joined the Society over a year ago. I assume it is waived, as it's never been discussed, but would like some peace for my conscience about this ruling.

If my character spends money on stuff, he pays for it. I've seen very little that has been more than a one day adventure, but I don't have a huge play history. As for waterskins...these aren't consumable. It's a canteen. You pay for the canteen, but the water is free in most cases. :)

Pay the monthly lifestyle fee (1,10,100,1000GP) and it takes care of all that.
It exists to prevent worrying about issues like that.

No set amount of time occurs between scenarios, therefore lifestyle costs make little to sense in the organized play environment.

Rule of thumb for society play is that tracked resources like rations and water may come into play during a module (and should be tracked accordingly), but between modules, it's basically hand-waved (you're put up by the society and don't have to pay for such trivialities).

There was only one time I specified that I used rations instead of eating the provided food and replenished them at the end of the adventure. Most of the time I don't worry about it.

I only call trail rations and water into question if players want to use these items for something besides their intended use. Otherwise I handwave it if players ask me about purchasing provisions for their mission. I assume the Society covers the expenses of travel, room and board. The slot doesn't include time to track such minutiae, and Josh was always against the campaign turning into "Living Barbie". However, if a player tells me they want to feed the hungry otyugh some of their trail rations and try to befriend it, then I want to see where the food is on their character sheet.

Pathfinder Society doesn't pay us anything, so I'm assuming they at least take care of room and board, especially assuming we stay in Pathfinder lodges most of the time.

Also, bookkeeping isn't fun and we already do enough of it in PFOS, I think it's ok if we overlook a few gold pieces for food and water.

As a GM and a Player, I do not worry about this. Too much recordkeeping makes the game dull. I assume that the Pathfinder Society can at least spring for lunch.

Thanks all. I'm in complete agreement about the bookkeeping. I didn't know that about the waterskin though. I'd figure one would need to replace such a thing, but I could be thinking of wineskins. Never had real world interaction with such a container of liquid. But hey, it's fantasy!

Heh. Hit a few of the tourist markets, and you can find various types of more-or-less accurate waterskins/wineskins.

As to wineskins, the "skin" itself, won't need to be replaced, you could even use it as a waterskin and vice versa. The expense would be involved in purchasing wine to refill it. And that cost is a bit of a variable, depending on the quality of wine you want.

Waterskins, unless you are in a special adventure (LG had one I played in) are not likely to be tracked. Heck, my 9th level character carries an empty waterskin with him, and just uses one of his Clerical Orisons, Create Water, to fill it when he wants to have a drink, or give water to someone else.

Rations can be a bit more problematical, but, as a GM or player, I would only consider tracking the actual time passed during an adventure, not things like the X number of days spent in box text travel. Spending it on a ship? Covered by the money the Society paid to hire your place on the ship. Hired as caravan guards? Part of your pay is going to be food & drink in moderation.

Then again, past a certain point, I can see a significant number of PCs not having to worry about it. Clear spindle Ioun stones seem to be a fairly popular purchase....
