1)So we will never see feats or a feat tree devoted to one sorcerer bloodline?

2)Even though Ultimate equipment is setting neutral is there any chance of Numeria "sky metals" or tech in this book?

3)What about a "Ultimate faith" or "Ultimate divine" type book? or maybe a gods and demi-gods type book?

4)have you seen Game of thrones? if so do you like it?

5)Will we ever get a way for sorcerers(or oracles) to add spells to there list known that fits there bloodline/mystery? examples: celestial bloodline- with delay posion, holysmite, aid, holy aura
Fey/verdint bloodlie with more plant based spells
stone mystery with more earth and acid based spells

6)Do you have a favorite movie that has one or more dragons?

7)Any chance of sorcerer bloodlines that are related to other classes like the arcane(wizard) and mystro(bard) bloodlines? I would love to see ones for witch, oracle, and druid.

1) Unlikely, unless we do some sort of all-out sorcerer sorcebook that looks ONLY at that class. And since that'd be a product that only sorcerer players would buy and one that players of the other 19 or so classes would NOT buy... that's a sketchy type of book to publish in the first place from a marketing viewpoint.

2) Unlikely. Ultimate equipment will be about equipment... not the things that you use to make equipment. The book's still in outlining form, so that could change, but we won't be including any Numerian sky metals in there at all, I would suspect. Because it has to be world-neutral.

3) Also unlikely. The gods are world specific. They're the ONLY part of the core rulebook, really, that aren't open content. A book that's all about religion and the like would, by definition, NOT be world-neutral. As it turns out, this is a topic we've actually covered very very often in our various books, between the significant deity articles we publish twice per adventure path, the 64 page Gods and Magic book, or the three Faiths books we recently put out in the Player Companion line.

4) I have. It was brilliant. Might be my favorite TV show ever.

5) Unlikely, since what defines a bloodline, to a large extent, ARE its powers and spells. That's valuable. Allowing those to be swapped around and changed dilutes the use and power and personalty of the bloodline to begin with.

6) Favorite dragon movie = "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad"

7) Nope, because sorcerers are sorcerers, not bards or witches or druids, and class choice is not something you pass on via genetics.

For my 40th birthday party I decided to run a day long game. My idea is to request from each player ahead of time to choose a character from any genre or medium and mash up the 8 players in a scenario.

I'm undecided on what kind of scenario/genre to use. (doesn't have to be something printed). Anything come to mind as something that could work in a long afternoon? (8-10 hours)

Also if you got to play in the game, what character would you choose?

Dear James,

If you would ever like to self publish a book, as an almost graduated graphic designer, I officially volunteer to do your layout, graphics and typesetting. Unfortunately I am better at photo manipulation than I am at sketching monsters. As for a related question, do you have any reccomendations for finding freelance work as a graphic designer in the gaming industry? I suspect volunteering (go Pathfinder Society of Georgia!) and learning digital art (in progress) help in that regard.

I also wanted to ask if you have any advice on running/designing encounters at high levels. I am currently co-DMing Legacy of Fire (with Alorha on the boards), and our players are a very very optimized party. They are currently level 13, nearly 14, and about halfway through book 5. We are intentionally over leveling them, in order to have some fun with the higher levels, and so they can potentially face the *spoiler*. In short, Alorha and I have to convert to PFRPG and bump encounters up 2-4CR. We are starting to run into the problem that encounters tend to be 1 round cakewalks or potential TPKs. Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thank you for maintaining this thread, I know it can't be easy. Also, thanks for making Pathfinder a game that emphasizes lore and story just as much as it stresses rule balance.

PS. Apologies for the dinner at GenCon that was such a long walk away. Neil and Greg didn't quite tell us just how far away your hotel was. Hopefully we will get a chance to reschedule next year.

Thanks for the offer! I'll keep that in mind if I ever decide to go the self-publishing route with it.

As for freelance work as a graphic designer in the gaming industry... alas, I don't have any recommendations. At Paizo, all of our graphic design work is handled in-house by full-time employees, and I'm pretty sure that's how it works at WotC as well. Not sure about ALL of the game companies out there, so you might want to look around there, perhaps? Not really helpful advice, alas... :(

As for running high level encounters, my best advice there is to get to those encounters organically; if you're familiar with a party's play style because you've run them up to high level from 1st level, it'll be a lot easier to prepare for encounters since you'll have a better idea of how they're likely to behave. And once the PCs get to high level, don't worry if they start acting like that—aka; if they're doing well that's good. Not every battle needs to be a life-or-death struggle, and if the PCs start feeling like they're unstoppable now and then, that's kind of fun for the players, since it makes them actually FELL like they've become more powerful. The best way to handle higher level characters who seem to be smashing through every encounter is, in my experience, to stay dynamic during play. Feel free to add more monsters to an ongoing battle if the PCs are doing fine, or to apply the Advanced template to monsters just before a battle begins, or even to max out hit points. It's best to NOT use progressively tougher monsters, though, since that does increase the chance that they'll be hit with something that they just can't handle.

And no worries abou the Gen Con dinner! We ended up in a hotel that was about a mile from our booth, and walking that mile twice a day with an 8 hour shift of standing around or running demos or doing seminars was pretty exhausting. The problems that caused us to end up in a far-away hotel this year have been resolved, so things should work out better next Gen Con. So if you all are going next year, let me know and we'll try again!

Why is there a spell called monstrous physique III that allows you to turn into Diminutive and Huge monstrous humanoids when there are no diminutive or huge monstrous humanoids?

Because we keep inventing new monsters at a rate of about 6 per month, and because we do bestiaries of 300+ monsters every year, and because there's a lot more monster options beyond even that if you go beyond Paizo publications.

Similarly, the monk gaining the ability to penetrate creatures with DR/lawful was pretty lame before we put out Bestiary 2, but now there's all sorts of monsters that a monk can use that power on... if only against qlippoth.

1)Can a Kami take human form? if so physical or incorporeal?

2)Can a creature with DR hurt(bypass the DR) of another creature of it's DR type or species? for example can a werewolf harm another werewolf or a fey harm another fey with natural attacks.

3)In nature poisonous animals are immune to there own poisons(and the poisons of there species), are creatures who are not immune to all poisons, immune to the poison of the same creature as they are?

4)What are the chances of a witch's hex granting poison use, improved version of child scent(like that works for virgins, bloodlines, races, royalty, etc.) or one for shapeshifting?

5)What level would you make a spell that can summon a 5th level fighter ghost with ghost touch weapons and armor?

6)Since summon monster/nature's ally spells are not getting updated, what are the odds of getting some specialized summoning spells for Fey, Azatas, Proteons, Aeons, Magical beast, Humaniods, Dragons, etc.?

7)Why not give Hags a hag subtype?

1) Generally, no. Kami can take a physical form that CAN be human-like in shape (but isn't always so); and some kami might have the ability to cast spells like alter self, but as a general rule, no, they can't appear as humans. That's not what they're into.

2) Nope; not unless they specifically have a power that lets them do so. That said... monsters generally do a lot more damage with natural attacks than people do with weapons, so while they'll still be hitting DR, more damage will get through anyway.

3) That makes sense to me, but that's not part of the rules. It's certainly how I run things in games I run though.

4) That depends on if a designer of new witch hexes thinks up those ideas. I think all three of those would be pretty cool hexes, though.

5) A 5th level human ghost fighter is a CR 6 monster, and it takes summon monster V to summon CR 6 monsters. So at minimum, 5th level. Probably higher though, since arming that ghost with ghost touch weapons would be giving it gear in excess of what a CR 6 monster should be armed with in the first place. So probably 6th level... maybe even 7th level, since being incorporeal is ALSO a significant advantage.

6) Those odds are 100%. We already did some for new devils in "Rival Guide." There'll be more here and there as we continue publishing new spells (the next batch I can think of is due out in "Book of the Damned III: Horsemen of the Apocalypse").

7) Because hags are monstrous humanoids, and monstrous humanoids, unlike humanoids or outsiders, don't generally have racial subtypes. Night hags are outsiders, of course, but the fact that they cross types makes it EVEN WEIRDER to give them a racial subtype. So far, the only class of monster's we've crossed that boundary on, I believe, are the oni.

I have designed a monster for my home game that exists essentially as a parasite that matures within a host, then escapes violently (think chestburster) and migrates to the nearest source of water. It never fully controls the host body while maturing, but it instills a desire in the host to remain near bodies of water and also drives the host insane over time. These creatures have been established in the game world as a kind of "proto-aboleth," and may possibly be the larval stage of true aboleths.

With all this aboleth-themed goodness going on, what other kinds of creatures (from the Bestiary and Bestiary 2) would you recommend for me to include in the adventures as allies and companions to monsters such as these? I'm particularly interested in lower-level threats (since a full-blown aboleth is CR 7 and I've pegged these "proto-aboleths" as a CR 3). Thanks!

That's a pretty significant question that could see me spending hours pouring through monster books... so I'm going to have to pass on a detailed analysis. I'd suggest skum and faceless stalkers to start, though. Beyond that, humanoid cultists and more or less anything with the aquatic subtype.

James, for more sorcerer archetypes, what about a new series for the Companion line, focusing on 3 classes at a time? Something along the lines of the following:

Full Arcane - Sorcerer, Wizard, Witch
Medium Arcane - Alchemist, Magus, Summoner
Full Divine - Cleric, Druid, Oracle
Medium/Weak Divine - Inquisitor, Paladin, Ranger
Warrior - Barbarian, Cavalier, Fighter
Skill - Bard, Monk, Rogue
Odd - Gunsligner, Ninja, Samurai

Or maybe if you omit the "Odd" category you could do three releases, one for the Arcane classes, one for the Divine classes, and one for the Skill monkeys and Warrior-types? That way each book would appeal to at least a third of the player base?

Also, can we please, please, PLEASE get some more Oracle curses in print, including the full version of Mute? It's like the only major crunchy bit I'm not just rolling in options for at the moment, even factoring in 3rd party PDFs. (Are there even any more out there besides the ones in the Super Genius Guide, which I already have?)

I'm actually of the opinion that between APG, Ultimate Combat, and Ultimate Magic that we've got enough archetypes out there, honestly. There's room for a few more here and there in Player Companions and the Campaign Setting line, but those will have more world flavor than the generic ones do.

More oracle curses is something I'm seeing a lot of (although I haven't bothered to cross-check to see if that's just one or two or three folks posting the request over and over in different threads). But those aren't really things we can make an entire book out of; they'd have to be a smaller element of a larger book, and we've pretty much already done the three books that they'd make sense to show up in (APG, UC, and UM). We'll see, though.

Also, rogues and bards HATE it when they're called skill monkeys.

A question about teleport.

What happen when you teleport to a moving object?
(I know that the whole planet is moving, but better avoid that can of worms)

To make some example:
- you see a stagecoach running and try to dimension door on his top
- you scry a ship and try teeporting on its deck (technically you should fail unless you have an idea of where the ship it is as to teleport somewhere "You must have some clear idea of the location and layout of the destination.")
- you know very well the layout of your friend ship and try teleporting there without scrying it, but you don't have a clear idea of where it is (it should fail for the reason depicted above).

The interaction of several spells with moving objects is a thorny subject.
What will happen if you cast wall of force on the deck of a moving ship?

Sorry to give you this kind of nightmares, but maybe you should consider them before the final layout of the pirate AP.
It is the kind of stuff that can make or break a AP.

You have to know the location in order to teleport to something. If you want to teleport onto a ship, you need to know where that ship is. If the ship moves, then the teleportation attempt fails. My suggestion would be simply to have it fail on the spot, but you could certainly say that you teleport into the last spot you KNOW the ship was at. If, on the other hand, you know where the ship is (say, via scrying), you CAN teleport to it normally.

Spell effects that are stationary, like a wall spell, remain stationary even if you cast them on a moving object... UNLESS the moving object is large enough that it can contain the entire effect of the spell created.

You're correct, though, that a section that talks about how effects like that interact with ships is a good topic in one of our several nautical-themed articles we'll be putting into Skull & Shackles.

As for the comment about using galleys on ocean voyages... it's an interesting one, but it falls prey to the typical assumption a lot of gamers make about clerics (or any spellcaster)–that they're as common in everyday parts of the world as they are in adventuring parties. This simply isn't the case. Not every ship has a cleric on it. Those that DO can certainly do better in the category of drinking water, but that's not the assumed baseline.

What artwork is that?

The rivers and the lake can indeed take boats... but only when the rivers aren't frozen over. Whether or not the rivers are frozen likely depends on whether or not the queen wants them to be frozen over. So when there's important river trade that she wants coming in and out of Irrisen... then yes, the rivers are not frozen, but when there's invaders trying to get in there via rivers, the rivers freeze.

Thank you, James! You're awesome!

The artwork in Inner Sea World Guide looks like it is navigable but there are chunks of ice in it and a lot of the shore of the lake is frozen (which makes sense). In the Whitethrone write-up in Cities of Golarion though, what it does show of the lake is completely frozen save for around the Palace.

Change from what? This is a new thing for Pathfinder—it didn't exist in 3.5. Are you talking about changes from the beta to the final?

In any case... the difference between spell-like abilities and supernatural abilities is that you can dispel magic a spell-like ability and they provoke attacks of opportunity—supernatural abilities generally don't and are thus more powerful as a general rule. The bloodline abilities were made mostly into spell-like abilities to ramp back their power.

Dragon78 wrote:

Because sorcerers are supposed to be casting spells, not fighting in melee. An at will claw attack would encourage sorcerers to be played in a style that we didn't want to be the encouraged play style—there are other options for that. In addition, additional attacks of any type are very powerful... and so we wanted to limit this option as well.

Where do you live? Animals do seem to be able to perceive things leading up to certain events.. like the earthquake that struck this region of the country the other day. Erratic animal behavior prior to earthquakes has been documented.

Are you surprised that people don’t really comment on the short movie quotes at the bottom of the Credits page of the sixth instalment of each Adventure Path?

Whose idea was it to do those?

Well damn, I'm sure I'm not the only one that never noticed. Bloody good catch.

They're not all from films.

Sic Semper Tyrannis isn't, and if The runelords will return is from a film then I want to see it.

Oh snap. I just opened up my book 6 of Kingmaker to check that out. Very cool. :)

I want to see that too! When it comes out let’s go and see it, my treat ;)

In the mean time ... have you ever watched the end credits from a 007 film?

The other is a pretty famous quote ... I am happy to wait and see what James says about it.

Chicago suburbs, and while some people around here did feel yesterdays' quake, the initial incident with my cat happend last Thursday, so I don't think it's related...but a good theory.

I believe these are all from Shakespeare.

Sic Semper Tyrannis = thus always to tyrants Julius Caesar
Quisque suos patimur manes = Each of us bears his own hell Antony and Cleopatra
