Pretending to be Something Your Are Not.

Advice

I tried to search this up, but just could not word it correctly enough to find the answer. So here it is.

I want to make a blacksmith/artificer/wizard that uses construct armor, but I don't want anybody to know that he's using construct armor. So I came up with the idea to have him act as if he were a "fighter" basically a soldier/merc, act proud, confident, noble, etc.

My question is this: What skill check would be used to act that way, and what opposed check would be used to see through it?
I was thinking either Bluff or Perform (Acting) vs either Perception or Sense Motive
? any ideas?

Lol. Cool idea. Disguise may have something to do with that as well. Not really sure how that would work out but Bluff makes total sense as well.

Honestly, it will probably depend on the GM you are playing under. If you were playing a character at my table I would probably say Disguise for when people were trying to ascertain your profession due to sheer appearance. Bluff for when you had to convince someone through deceitful roleplaying dialogue.

That's kinda what I had in mind too, my GM seemed to like the idea of using Perform (Acting). Or perhaps instead of making the check, somehow calculate a DC based off of my skill (whichever we end up using)

This is pretty obviously the Disguise skill, but Bluff could be needed when he opens his mouth. Taking a multiclass level to gain all of the appropriate weapon and armor proficiencies would nearly negate the need for skill checks to deceive.

I am firmly against using Perform (acting) because when using this skill correctly, the other creature should know it is being entertained.

That's exactly what I was thinking when it came to Perform (Acting). Acting to perform an entertaining standup is clearly not the same as acting deceitfully and outright lying to convince someone of your profession. Disguise + Bluff are the two you should be aiming at. But if your DM insists that Perform (Acting) is the way to go there is not much you can do about that.
