Modifying Core System for Steampunk

Homebrew and House Rules

Hi all,

I'm getting back into GMing d20, and I want to use the Pathfinder system to run a steampunk one-shot with the group I play with...

How would you modify the [b]core[b/] system to accommodate this setting? I do not want to use other books or supplements, if possible...

Here's some of my thoughts/questions:
1. Make many metal armors and medieval weapons exotic weapons, and thus need a feat to wield...
2. I want to use firearms, so I may need to port in the firearms from the 3.5E DMG. Additionally, from an old Dragon magazine article, firearms halve the AC of metal armor and ignore the ACs of nonmetal armor.
3. I want to minimize the appearance and use of magic... I'm considering prohibiting spells beyond the 3rd level. Instead, when a spellcaster gains a new level with spells beyond 3rd, they are allowed a metamagic feat, that allows them to utilize higher spell slots...
4. Artificers can be mimicked by wizards that choose item creation feats instead of spell levels... The items are machine that reproduce spell effects... This may need to thought about some more...

What do you think?

The Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting has guns (they come from Alkenstar).

I recommend picking up the PDF for the Iron Kingdoms Character Guide and the Liber Mechanika (also IK). It is a rich setting with a great steamy feel. There are Arcane Mechaniks, Gun Mages, Bodgers... and lots of guns. Alchemical replacements for lots of magic. It is a great setting.

That's cool, but does it have stats for the weapons, i.e. damage, range, etc.?

Sounds interesting... I'll check it out!
Still, I don't want to inflate the number of resources needed to run a basic Steampunk game. I'm wondering if one could make some changes to the Core Pathfinder ruleset to approximate the genre...

I would second this recommendation, IK is awesome and sounds like it would be a good fit for what you want. Some of my favorite books.
