Sean Astin may be cast in the film adaptation of The Hobbit?
I am keen to see a new film (non-animated) version of The Hobbit, but it would be horrible to see them try to write Sam into the film. Okay, may be as a narrator since he ends up with Bilbo/Frodo's book at the end of the Lord of the Rings.
Has anyone heard anything about this?
Edit: Sean Astin will be reprising his role as Sam in the film adaptation of The Hobbit.

According to reports I have read, te end of the first Hobbit film will end just after the slaying of Smaug. This leaves only about a 25% of the actual source material to fill the second movie. It's not just Sam who is slated to appear in the movie, either. It's quite a few of the hobbits ad probably some of the non-hobbits as well. I believe that Dominic Monaghan has already confirmed that he will be playing Merry in at least one of the films. Buzz within the interwebs is that the second film will act as a bridge/prequel between the end of The Hobbit and the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring, going into the backstories of all the members of the Fellowship. I for one am excited to see an eager Boromir set out for Rivendell while his brother is sent to the front lines at Osgiliath and Cair Andros.

This being Hollywood, Bilbo will be played by Bruce Willis, computer-altered to look like a Hobbit. He kills Smaug with a pair of automatics while yelling "Yippe-ki-yay" and dodging the flaming breath (he only gets a bit singed). Instead of dwarves, he's accompanied by Angelina Jolie as Lydda, the "hawt" female hobbit love interest.

Shouldn't they fill it up with unknown english actors who will then go on to star on terrible shows immitating Lost and Heroes?

But the good news is Smaug will be played by a CGI Arnold in a triumphant non return to the silver screen!!

I heard that he declined because he thought TLotR books were "rubbish" but I don't know how reliable that is.I'd hate to think that though I like Connery and it would be a shame if there was no place for him in my NWO.

Has the whole Peter Jackson thing been resolved?
Peter Jackson is executive producing the Hobbit and contributing to the screenplay (along with his wife). The movie will be directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth).
The legal issues were resolved behind closed doors, although I assume they were to Jackson's satisfaction.
Jackson's comments regarding why he isn't directing it were something to the effect of "I've already done 10 years of it, I want to do other things". In the next few years he has The Lovely Bones (an adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel) and a TinTin movie (apparently a much loved character outside the U.S. that he is partnering with Spielburg on). He is still signed to produce a HALO movie for Microsoft, but that has been stalled for a bit, as Microsoft could not find movie studios willing to partner with it.
