That's right! No effeminate knickers for Nik, but leather pants --oh yeah!
Of course given the technology and cash available to him its either leather or wool. He really doesn't have much choice.
Haha, Jessa was referring to any kind of underwear, implying perhaps that Nik "goes commando". Probably enough to make the young ranger blush.
Niklaus Wright |
"Ach, he's like all these fellers; ya give 'em a piece o' yer mind and they scuttle away." Jessa says contemptuously, "Nothing to worry about. Y're safe, Nikky-boy."
Now Nik glowers briefly, " Yeah, but ..." . Shaking his head, he turns away to look for a new napping spot.
On the Zoom question, Jessa seems to be more or less the party's focal at this point. At least she's been the most out-going. She's said Eichandar's harmless, he's probably in. After all we have a good bit of the voyage to talk. But if Eichandar wants to stay on the outside for character reasons, that's good too. Up to him really. I imagine we'll get some combat together on the trip. Nothing like a DnD fight to bring folks together.
edit: sorry about talking about you in third person Zoom. After all you are right here. Not very polite of me.

When I asked about background material, one of you suggested Greyhawk Gazeteer. I found this here on the Paizo site. Does any of you have an opinion on its relevance/quality? Did the setting change much from AD&D to 3E ?

at $4 the price is right. I just don't want to be working from an inaccurate world view.

Having bought the original Living Greyhawk Gazetteer for $27 several years ago, I would say that for $4 dollars you are getting a good deal - the map portion is what I may be curious about in terms of appearance.
I would agree with Fabes - it provides a fairly udpated background of the world of Greyhawk through 3.5 edition (considering it was the original AD&D world - that's quite a bit). As Radavel mentioned, it doesn't include the current campaign, but I believe for our purposes it would provide background for our characters more than a direct reference (but of course our DM may have other plans).
Being something of an old school D&D player, I found it great to read - it does for Greyhawk/Oerth what has been done for many other campaign worlds - it gives you a broad overview and complete pictures of the whole world. The thing to remember about this world is that, unlike many game worlds, it started in a piecemeal fashion - I don't think the designers at TSR were shooting for such a comprehensive setting - it just grew out that way. It makes the world both very organic and somewhat odd at the same time - parts and pieces were kind of mixed and matched at first and it could be confusing to know what was going on. Still, it makes for some interesting mesh of traditional fantasy and midevalism.
Still, it remains a good baseline for getting to know the world. I know Wizards tried to increase interest for a few years with several additions that updated several regions with further deatils, including:
*Player's Guide to Greyhawk
*Several adventure modules - with at least one involving Mordenkanen and the Circle of Eight. There were also a few that revisited famous Greyhawk sites; and now there's the Castle Greyhawk one.
*Some bigger expansions updating several of the more famous villains/factions - like the Scarlet Brotherhood, Slavers, etc.
*I recall that Dungeon had a mini-campaign (similar to the Adventure paths) that involved solving the problems of the nation of Sterich over 3 or 4 issues.
I feel like maybe I'm geek rambling too much, so I hope that helps at this point.

By the way, in my last post I kept talking about the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer. I just realized that there's a also a smaller version called just the Gazeteer - which I think Wizards put out as sort of a gamer's primer to get you interested in the bigger game world materials. Not certain if it is has been put out - given that it's basically a short term summary of what's in the bigger book. I have copy I picked up awhile back.

"So yous two go off gallivantin' off whilst we do all the leg work, is that it? We'll make sure y' get the best seats, milord." That was perfect, Fabesminis. Absolutely perfect.
Still haven't had a chance to read the Greyhawk pdfs. My regular work laptop wasn't available. So I had to borrow an old one. I was going to read the pdfs on the trip to Pittsburgh. The borrowed computer had no Adobe reader, no wireless card, and the hotel had no wireless receivers to loan. Oh well. Sometime this week. How's it with ya'll?

I'm a little worried now about the dissapearance of Psionic Fox. We've had no posts since the 18th and he hasn't posted anywhere else since then either. I do hope he's ok.
In light of this and the fact that the party really needs a Arcanist of some description we need to think about replacing Eerion at some stage.
I was going to suggest carrying on as is until the party gets to Cauldron and then talk to our 'subs bench' to see if any of then fancy playing a wizard or the like. At the rate we're going this gives Psionic fox a while to re-surface before we have to make Erion an NPC. I will keep the character around whatever happens - Psionic Fox did a really good job of creating a character I wanted to see develop.
What do you guys think ?
Flamifur |
Also, whilst I'm navel gazing and bearing in mind that this is the first PBP I've run do we think we're going at a fast enough pace, etc ?
I'm trying to give everyone some chances to interact with NPCs as much as they want but I am aware this slows down progress. Some feedback on this would be good. For instance, do you want me to make more of it skill check based so the pace picks up or are we ok with it as it stands ?
Let me know.
Alex Martin |
Concerning Psionic Fox, I'll admit I'm also starting to get a little worried - I keep wondering if he lives in the San Diego area or something like. Sorry if that sounds a little over-reactive.
I'd hate to replace him, but I can see where you have enough going that running him as a constant, active NPC would be problematic for you. I do agree that maybe we should ask one of alternate folks to at least start prepping a character.
My suggestions would be someone we meet on the caravan road, but won't be active until we get to Cauldron proper as you mention. Otherwise, if we wish to delay it a little more, maybe a Cauldron "local" to help join the band?
Still, I'll say I hate to have Fox miss out because of something like a busted PC.

I'll admit I'm very new to all this, but so far Flamifur it looks fine. I would say it's more our RPing mischief that are slowing things down - the interaction is giving us a chance to "warm up" to how things are going.
I think in terms of switching to skills checks or speeding things up, maybe if you read it as there's not much we are going to gain by the interaction - then proceed ahead. If you think there's something worthwhile for us to hit onto - or maybe one of us has something significant to do - then maybe some NPC actions are warranted.
For example - if you think the caravan trip will have some interesting moments you want us to experience - then by all means switch to deeper conversations. If it's more of a random monster encounter - then maybe more skill checks and less interaction?
Just positing a suggestion - please don't take it as what I am expecting. Hope that helps.
Radavel |
A suggestion - If we can play out the journey to Cauldron...perhaps we can have enough time to be certain if PsionicFox is coming back or not. Besides, at its present size, the party needs additional xp opportunities from random or not so random encounters. Also, it gives the characters a chance to bond and get to know each other's style of play before facing the menaces of cauldron. Any subs will also benefit if we play out the journey, both in terms of XP and bonding with the rest of the party.
As to pacing, I think we're doing fine...but I have no objections to speeding up.
Flamifur, you're doing fine. I was in fact surprised when you said that this was your first time running a pbp.

I'm happy how things are going, the begining of an adventure is always a little slow to start anyway! As for Fox, I say we wait a week and see if he shows up hopefully!
Just a thought here, I am always curious where people are from when I play these pbp. Knowing might also help out if a person disappears for awhile and we see on the news that that city is having some problems like San Diego is having and might explain why they disappeared!
Well anyway, I am in Seattle, Washington, USA and yes it does rain here a lot..heh

I think PsionicFox said at the start of this thread that he is from the East Coast of Australia.
I'm in the Philippines by the way. So when most of you guys are sleeping, I'm slaving away at the office. But we just had a long weekend on account of the Barangay Elections last October 29 and facing another long weekend starting November 1, so you can't see me complaining.

I'd like to give Psionic Fox the best chance possible to continue. I think your plan is sound to carry on as is until we reach Cauldron. If you don't want to DM-PC Erion he could stay in port taking care of his concerns here and catch up in Cauldron. If the caravan trip is mostly low-level combat his absence shouldn't hurt us much and we've got extra combat types anyway.
The pace is fine, I like interacting with the other PCs and NPCs. I'd kind of like to get out of port and on the road.
Edit: I'm near Boston, MA, USA. Eastern time zone.

Oh. My. God.
I have just had the most INSANE three weeks.
We've had this guy at work (my direct superior), act like a total jerk, I've been pulling REALLY long hours, AND the jerk just got fired (meaning I'm currently doing his job at the moment too.
Thank you all for your concern, but hopefully things have died down now, and I can resume my regular posting schedule. I'd go into more detail, but I am absolutely exhausted at the moment. When I return to consciousness, I'll catch up and jump back in - assuming I'm still welcome, of course...
Again, sorry folks.
Erion Gilor |
And I have awakened.
I'd like to start off by saying 'thank you' to you all for your concern and patience with me during the last few weeks. Once again, I feel I must apologize profusely for my disappearance, but I am very glad that you all had the grace to wait for me to return. I should be able to post most days, and likely not more than once a day (unless its a quiet weekend or something). Of course, this limit only applies to IC posts. OOC I can probably post more.
Secondly, I feel honored to be part of a writing group who thinks so much of me, and my skills a writer:
I will keep the character around whatever happens - PsionicFox did a really good job of creating a character I wanted to see develop.
Never before have I received praise for the way I write, and I just wanted to say that I am very glad to have returned in time - as this has been one of the most fulfilling DnD games I've ever played, and we haven't really done anything yet!
I'll cut it short here, but I'll say this again.
Thank you. Thank you all.

I've Just had a mad 2 days which (included my computer deciding to try and destroy itself again) which is why I haven't posted.
I'm so please Erion is back in Psionic Fox's hands and I'm, obviously, even more glad Psionic Fox has surfaced !
I'll get everything going again tomorrow morning (GMT).
Probably time to make stuff dangerous...............

I can assist I think' said a gentle voice from the shadows and the tall, androgenous figure of an elf was next to them, clad for travel with muddied boots. 'I have a piece I'd like to see used - it's not totally mine but enough of it is to be of use.'
I have a question - if the book is meant to represent me, what the hell does that quote mean?
Yes, I know, I'm harping on the initial post again - but it was so well done, and I just have to ask!
