Having friends with the same crippling abandonment issues that you do is not fun at all.

Can't speak for others, but for me, it's the paranoid fear that everyone you love is going to leave you. Even though you know people aren't going to leave you behind, you take all sorts of crazy precautions to keep them around, which makes you come off as paranoid and weird. If you've got two or more people doing this at the same time, you end up with some kind of mess.

Having a series of strange, possibly hornomally based fights with wife. Sigh.

What is a hormonally based fight?

Is that like putting estrogen into the enemy's water supply?

People don't plan things these days. When I ask when something will be delivered, when I can start work, when you can meet me, or something else to that effect, "I'll call you sometime" is not an acceptable answer. I cannot sit around staring at my telephone for days on end. I have a life outside of being left holding bags. F%+~ all of you who do this.

This again.

I'm currently out four weeks' pay because of people forgetting to do paperwork. I know paperwork sucks, but actually doing it means that you can have employees that, you know, can actually come to work and s@&$.

Instead of sitting on their asses waiting for phone calls.

Go f&+& yourselves.

I agree with this. In my book, "We should totally get together sometime. I'm a little busy right now, but we'll be in touch" is codespeak for "You're not worth my time but I'm too gutless to say it." I'm sure that's not always the case, but it is often enough.

I'm a programming noob. I'm making one of my first projects in Visual Basic for a class I'm taking. I just spent 3 hours looking for a Property for one of my Objects, not finding it, looking on MSDN to try to find out why I couldn't find it (o the horror!) and finally, finally finding it in my Property window, where it was all along. Somehow I was just not seeing it (and my Search function on Windows hadn't found it at all!)

You may need to drop a nuke on their ass.

Call the Department of Labor; remember the mutant dogs in the movie Resident Evil? If you have done labor, and your employer has not yet paid you that means they have not paid the legally owed taxes either. Oh.. oh.. the DOL will come running like a pack of mutant dogs.

This is a one-way door however. But you will get your money.

ooh.. the carnage

Spoiler:

will be beautiful to behold.

The Virginia Workers Comp Commission. It's been 8 months and they STILL can't figure out how to spell my name. Letters, calls, emails, and they INSIST I don't know how to spell my last name. I didn't realize there were that many ways to misspell my name.

My cousin is in grad school at the University of Cincinatti. He's one of their top fine arts students. He just found out that the University is going to censor his art exhibit. His undergrad in West Virginia didn't censor him, but UC is going to.
I never would have thought that Cincinatti is more prudish than West Virginia.

Well, to be fair, Sanakht Inaros isn't one of the Top 10 Baby Names in Virginia.

Getting ready to sleep for the night and knowing with certainty that the coming day will be just like the day that is just now coming to an end. In my case, another day in bed on my back or right hip dealing with a likely irreparably disintegrating S1 nerve, two herniated disks, nausea, dizzyness, depression, increasing inability to use knife/fork (or any similar fine motor control), and enough pain that 20mg/650mg of Hydrocodone/APA every four hours just takes the edge off.

yes *nod* this counts as a thing in life that sucks

On the other hand, every day brings me closer to surgery - so that's a positive.

Much the same as LT, I find myself getting ready for bed, with the fact that I have only this night and the next with my wife, before that silver jet takes me back to the war. Maybe not as physically discomforting, but certainly mentally discomforting. Here's to hoping we leave Iraq in December. Hellish as that withdrawal will be. I should know. I remember 2003.

I hope you enjoyed your time off. Your family and friends will miss you. :)

Even those of us who don't know you in RL. :P

My gaming group is about to fall apart because the host is going through a mid-life crisis and divorcing his wife. He's a real good friend, but he's being a bit of a diva, and a lot of it has to do with new online relationships he's forged. I'm sure I'll be able to find/forge a new group, but since I like this one, and I've sunk a lot of time GMing the group over the past few years, I think this is sucky.

lol...Actually, my last name is Voyles. So far they've spelled it Boiles, Voiles, Boils, Voils, Boiless, Bogles, Vogles, Bogels, Vogels, Boyels, Voyels, Bogyls, Vogyles, and as Voigles. It makes it really hard to log in when they keep changing the spelling on your name. It also gets annoying because once (or twice) a month they threaten to take me to court because I haven't updated my file. The only good thing that comes fom that is they show me how they spelled my name. Even the safety guy/worker's comp rep for the company I used to work for is amazed at how badly they screw up.

This is actually rather true. When he moves on to whatever the next stage of his career or education should be, saying he had an exhibit at his school is all well and good, but saying he had to be censored will actually increase interest. The avant-garde is a strange world.

I don't know your group dynamics, but would it be possible to have someone else host? That might take the "pressure" off your current host and the group won't need to break up.

Politics suck. At least here in the United States of Whatever they do. Choose between two effectively identical groups of rich jerks to make bad decisions for you! And charge you for it!

Can't really vouch for the situation in other countries.

They aren't effectively identical - just ask them. The excuses they make for expanding centralized power and increasing opportunities for government corruption are different.

We get some clowns, but at least with a compulsory vote in effect they can't get carried away too badly.

Everyone over 18 votes.

Everyone.

If you don't vote, you deserve what you get :p

We're working on it, but the nice thing about where we play now is that it's a central location. If he stops being the host, it's likely one or two people will stop coming because going somewhere else may be too far.

Bet he's not getting threatened to be taken to court though. Their misspelling my name is screwing up my paperwork. If they rule against me, according to the letters I've gotten, I will have to repay the worker's comp (almost $5k), reimburse the insurance company for the hospital bills (three skin grafts, three weeks in the hospital, and an ambulance ride). I've seen a couple of the bills and, yeah, it ain't pretty.

It sucks when you can no longer paint minis without the help of a magnifying glass. Just started my wife's mini and just painting the hair gave me a headache.

Getting played.

Having your stuff get thrown in a trash can. I mean I if I cannot dig it out I would rather have someone steal it and be happy with it then being thrown in a trashcan where no one uses it.

Your wife goes through a pretty crappy pregnancy, but then your beautiful baby boy finally arrives and everything is good.

But something isn't right with him, he can't eat properly, he doesn't sleep well, he is sick and unhappy and there's no clue as to what is happening.

So he has months and months and MONTHS of tests, consults, investigations and a year later he has 3 weeks in hospital because he can't breathe properly and then we find out that he has a nasty, life-threatening lung condition which puts him on 24*7 oxygen and actually might help, maybe... but that isn't the whole story.

We then find out he has a genetic disorder called Niemann-Pick Type C.

And it will kill him before he hits double figures.

But not before he loses everything that makes him our little Thomas. Alzheimer's for children they call it. But dementia is at the end of a horrible chain of debilitating and progressive neurological crappiness.

THAT is something in life that sucks.

Your place in the group is secure, and we're all willing to put the game on hold. If you think another night would be better, let us know. If you don't think you'll be able to rejoin, talk to us first.

I want to finish the campaign with you in it if possible, even if that means buying a laptop and running it half-live, half-remote. There's plenty of tools out there I can look into, if you need to stay home.

Don't try to rush back before you're ready. It's been good to step back and be a player for a change; I didn't realise how far behind I'd got with so many things, and I've been able to use the time to sort out some long-overdue crap.

I pray you can keep strong to shoulder the burden life gave you.

Thanks guys.

We've been living with the possible prospect of this disease for a few months, but it only got finally diagnosed last month. Since then we've been going through the whole denial-anger-bargaining-depression-acceptance cycle.

Not sure we're at the end of that yet. Can you go through it a few times before getting off? Dunno.

Anyway, we've got some great support from family and friends (Snorter and the rest of my gaming pals are among them) and the other kids help pull us through, as they just love their 'little brother with the tubes' and don't allow us to just sit and cry.

At least until they go to bed anyway.

But hey, he's still doing ok at the minute. He is still developing and learning new things, and he is HAPPY - despite his breathing problems.

And sometimes that is enough.

Thanks mate. It's quite a step to put this stuff online to be honest. I almost did it when we first found out, but it was too raw. Still is pretty bad, but I can at least talk about Tom until someone asks if he'll get better...

I would give anything to be a 5th level cleric.

Probably; if you keep having to get further evaluations and second opinions.

You want someone prepared to make a diagnosis and stick to it, so you can start preparing for the future, and apply for the help you'll need.

It took several referrals to get a diagnosis for Alex, and even now, they won't commit to saying where on the ASD spectrum he stands.
It was a relief to get what official recognition we did, so we can show we're not imagining it, or setting unrealistic expectations.

Having an older child, like Sophie, who is physically and mentally healthy, and performing well at school is also tremendously liberating, as we can show that we are not bad parents, and Alex's slower development is not due to neglect.

You have three older children, who are all healthy and happy; it's clear you both look after them all well.

Thanks Bob. The kids look after us it seems sometimes!

I always knew you had it hard with Alex, but after our recent events and looking every which way at disability and what it means for parents of children who aren't 'normal', I have the utmost respect for what you and Sarah do, every day. I hope we do as well when Tom is on the downturn. You are a credit to your family :-)

Oh gosh, a vent thread.

Things in life that suck:

1. My Mother-in-Law, the bride of Satan. Ignorant, selfish "ankle" (that's three feet below a woman's naughty parts using the naughty c-word), whose wanton drunkness and essentially prostitution in my husband's youth led to a host of personal problems with him culminating in him developing Ulceraltive Colitus, and persist with some dogged depression that strain our now long-distance marriage today, but more on that later.

2. The Norwegian public health system. Their half-trained and ill paid doctors and surgeons nearly murdered my husband. Their inefficiency in diagnosing his UC symptoms led to him being placed on medication that actually progressed the disease, so that by the time they made the correct one, he was already rotting from his insides, and required emergency surgery - which the surgeon botched, leaving him almost literally half the man he was.

3. The Norwegian welfare system. They've shuffled my husband's case around for 5 years on the cheapest available option for him to "live" as he's been coping with his new disability. 2 years of fighting tooth and nail finally got them to consider permanent disability, but only after he's tried working. He's working now, and will likely be on evaluation for a period of at least 9 months before they will even consider negotiations for his contract. In the meantime, he's living in filth with terrible, terrible people that strain his sanity and the limits of his ability to cope with everything because he cannot afford his own place, and moving back in with his parents would actually be worse.

4. The Norwegian Immigration office. Despite several doctors testifying to the fact that I provided my husband with care equivalent to that which the public health system were unable to afford and which he clearly needed to function, they denied our claim for family reunification. Reason - my disabled husband, see above, does not earn enough money to sustain us. Waited on the edge of our seats for 18 months for the decision, watching refugees and immigrants from elsewhere settle, refuse integrate, and continue with their lives as though they were entitled to a prolific breeding program on the welfare dime.

The absolute horror of being caught between two countries. My marriage to the world's most wonderful man consists of Skype dates and gaming to amuse ourselves in this prolonged period of separation. My husband is sick, and has no support other than myself, and all I can do is watch him tear himself apart from a distance, unable to help.

And the kicker to it is, if we had absolutely no integrity, or care for any potential offspring, we might have tried to become pregnant and negated the bulk of this problem. And we might be together today, a family, and have some manner of support. Instead, I am in California, my former life here in absolute ruins, with no real desire to reach out for any of it, and my husband is in Norway, the only place he CAN live with all of his health problems...
