Tiny characters and reach weapons

3.5/d20/OGL

I've toyed off and on with the idea of running a tiny sized N/PC.

I know that a tiny sized characters reach is 0ft, which means to make a melee attack they have to enter an opponents square provoking an attack of opportunity.

I'm wondering if I'm right in assuming that a tiny reach weapon would give them a reach of 5ft, enabling them make an attack without having to enter an opponents square.

tiny glaive 1d6
tiny longspear 1d4

ranged
tiny heavy xbow 1d6

speaking of which, Does a ranged weapons size affect it's range?

I know a "normal" character packs more melee punch but I was looking at this from a little more of a RP angle.

Great idea. I don't have my books with as I am out of town, but I would rule it that way until I learned otherwise.

I can't recall seeing anything about this. Although it would seem appropriate that the range would be less, rules don't match physics.

Sorry if this isn't much help.

It seems reasonable that reach weapon would give a tiny character 5 feet of reach, but I have not been able to dig up a rule to supporting it. As for range, it's silly, but size does not affect range (even though a giant's shortbow should shoot further than a halfling's long bow).

I think that would be a DM call/house rule, though a pretty reasonable and straightforward one.

Like Daigle said though, rules do not match physics. Heck, the rules aren't even internally consistent. If they were, small sized characters would have zero reach and we'd be having this discussion about them rather than tinies.

Reach Weapons

Glaives, guisarmes, lances, longspears, ranseurs, spiked chains, and whips are reach weapons. A reach weapon is a melee weapon that allows its wielder to strike at targets that aren’t adjacent to him or her. Most reach weapons double the wielder’s natural reach, meaning that a typical Small or Medium wielder of such a weapon can attack a creature 10 feet away, but not a creature in an adjacent square. A typical Large character wielding a reach weapon of the appropriate size can attack a creature 15 or 20 feet away, but not adjacent creatures or creatures up to 10 feet away.

* My emphasis *

Not really mathematically correct since when you double a zero you still end up with zero, but it makes sense that you would get at least 5' reach out of a tiny longspear.

Page 149 of the PHB(Big and little creatures in combat) indicates that tiny creatures do not threaten AOO's unless they carry reach weapons although no specific mention is made of what reach it gives them exactly.
So I'd say yes, a glaive or guisarme gives a tiny creature 5 foot reach.

I can remember reading about this topic yesterday in one of the books I have but for the life of me I can't remember where so I'll keep it at this.
