Filge on steriods

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Okay, can someone clear this up with me since I seem to be missing something. Filge is a 3rd level wizard and unless the term "necromancer" actually means something, his spell list is wrong.

A 3rd level wizard starts off with the ability to prepare 4 - 0 level / 2 - 1st level / 1 - 3rd level spells. Since Filge is so intelligent, he gets a bonus of 1 - 1st level and 1 - 2nd level. This brings his total to 4/0, 3/1, 2/3, so can someone please explain to me how he is capable of preparing 4/0, 4/1, 3/2! Does he have two syringes of extra spell storing in his back pocket?

2nd - ghoul touch, scare, spectral hand = 3
1st - chill touch (2), mage armor, ray of enfeeblement = 4
0 - disrupt undead, touch of fatiguw (2), ray of frost = 4

Now all of this would make sense if he were a 4th level wizard, in which case he would be have a CR4, he would be 4HD and his Will would be +5. Also, you guys must have rolled his hp pretty well since a wizard is 1d4.

1st - max hp (4) + con bonus (1) = 5
2nd - roll (4) + 1 = 5 (10)
3rd - roll (4) + 1 = 5 (15)

Any help in this area would be appreciated. Thanks.

Necromancer most certainly *does* mean something. Re-read the section in the PH about "school specialization", or see the SRD at:

http://www.geocities.com/sovelior/srd/wizard.html (and read the part about 'school specialization')

You must have missed the fact that he has the Toughness feat, adding 3 to his hp total.

L1 - max (4) + mCon (1) + feat (3) = 8
L2 - avg rounded down (2) + mCon (1) = 3 (11)
L3 - avg rounded up (3) + mCon (1) = 4 (15).

Looks like Filge has exactly average hp, like almost everything else tends to.

That I why I love this game so much, there is so much to be learned. Thanks for clearing that up for me Nikolas. I was so confused on the spells I completely missed the toughness feat. Duh.

As far as the school specialization goes... I learn something everyday (can you tell that I have never played a wizard or a sorc for that matter). Thanks again Nikolas.

Okay, how 'bout this? I know Filge can animate dead with scrolls, seeing as how he's too low-level to cast that as an arcane spell...but just how many scrolls did he have handy?

He seems to have quite a few beasties either running around and/or waiting in the wings. Not that I have a problem with AOW. I was just wondering how a 3rd level necromancer pulled off creating and controlling so many undead. Is there such a thing as a wand of create lesser undead? Why not? Perhaps it could be presented with an amulet of command undead, or some whatchimahoozitz like that. Doesn't matter. Filge WILL tell all before the end...

He got them through Balabar Smenk. Balabar has the wealth necessary to procure whatever Filge needs in his research, which is why they have such a great working relationship

Hey, considering what goes into making a "necroturgeon", he really COULD be on steriods! After all, he's injecting himself with them....

Regarding that fight sequence in the top of the tower... I can tell you what a difference a cleric capable of high powered turning can make. One game, cleric couldn't turn worth crud, second game, clerics were making the undead run like little children after an ice cream truck. Turning really made the difference for one party when dealing with Filge.

You know, I was wondering a little about Filge's stats and abilities, thinking he had access to stuff he couldn't cast or create in the first place. After reading all these posts, my mind is more at ease. Good stuff!

Yeah, that was a difficult battle with 3 of 6 PCs/NPCs in negatives.. the poor cleric only managed to turn the skeleton..

Which brings me to another thing.. skeletons are 1 hd.. if a cleric was 2nd level.. wouldn't the skeletons be destroyed? Thereby ruining all chance of burying Alastor's relatives?

The enchantment holding the bones together and animating the skeleton is destroyed. The bones themselves are not destroyed.
