AVP... why didn't anyone warn me?!?

Movies

I just saw Alien Vs Predator.

I can't say that I was disappointed with the movie, because I didn't have any expectaions for it.

But when the movie was over, I felt like I did at the end of the new Planet of the Apes and The Time Machine: I felt like I didn't accomplish anything by seeing the movie. It was like eating instant grits. How often have you said "man... these instant grits are great!"

These movies all looked better than their predecesors, but ultimately didn't have anything to add to their respective heritage to have any, as the French say, "I don't know what."

But my friends have read a lot more than I have on both the Predators and the Aliens, and they didn't seem to be as non-pulsed as I was. And on the way home, they wanted to know why I was so "blah" about the experience, but I couldn't really hit the nail on the head. Some of my thoughts are:

Sometimes it tried to be a suspence/thriller movie... but it wasn't suspenseful, or thrilling.

Sometimes it tried to be an intelligent movie... but it wasn't that intelligent.

Sometimes it tried to be a heroic save-the-planet for our children, and our children's children (although we all know that children shouldn't be having children). And... no one was heroic.

Sometimes it tried to be a sci-fi movie... but all I thougt was "yeah... I like Stargate's alien-worshiping better. A lot better."

The incubation times of the aliens is substantially different than the previous movies. And there seemed to be a lot more aliens than there were humans. (Aliens can only incubate live creatures... right?)

I've never seen a predator run from a fight... especially since he KNEW HE LOST!! Now, you could say that somehow he didn't realize that the alien spider thing got him, but that just goes back to the "not being intelligent" statement above.

Or that the other predators that had been monitoring the whole situation didn't realize that the predator had been impregnated. Or that the predator's incubation time was SUSTANTIALLY longer than any of the other incubation times.

Or that the... oh, never mind. It's just too much to go on about.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN DAWG KINDA LIKE THE LAST STAR TREK MOVIE JUST RE HASHES OF THE PREVIOUS STAR TREKS I left AvP the same myself because i had great expectations for this flik and came out thinking what the h...!! shoulda waited to rent or at least barrow itv from someone! if ya aint gonna do it right let somebody else handle it!

I saw it at a free screening. I still left wanting my money back!
(Just kidding; it was pretty good for free.)

I know what you mean. The plot holes with the previous films were fairly bad. I don't know why it is that Hollywood spends so much on Sci-fi effects and then completely ignores continuity and storyline. The only thing I did think was possibly kind of cool was that the Predator ship at the end might have been the one that crashes on that mining planet from the original Alien. Although I seem to remember the dead creature with the hole in its chest being a lot bigger in the first Alien movie.

Here's how I new the movie would be bad:

Paul Anderson. His name in the credits = utter crap.

No Stan Winston. The guy freakin' INVENTED the Predator, and they don't have him on the design team? That's insulting.

Saw was way better anyhow. Go check it out.

Or if you're REALLY hankoring for some AvP goodness, just play the game.

Well I can see that I am the only one who loved this film. In evbery ones attempt to blast this film I wonder if anyone actually paid attention to what the director has said in the interviews. Oh and let us not forget that it is a prequel.

By any chance did he say: "Don't expect too much."

And really if a movie's worth or lack thereof hinges on an interview that occurs outside the film, well once again, "don't expect too much."

Now this does not in anyway invalidate a person's like or dislike of the film, but it does narrow the audience.
