Background:
Yuri Magrar was born in Golushkin Hold in 4609 AR, the second son of Volken Magrar. Volken was one of the many thanes whose family was sworn to Clan-Chief Golka of the Golushkin Mountains in western Brevoy. The Magrar family held a position of special prominence among the Golushkin Clan, ever since Toren Magrar, Yuri's grandfather, had been declared Ambassador to the Far-flung Brethren, a new and essentially ambassadorial position created by the Clan-Chief in 4519 AR and tasked with making contact with other dwarven holds across Golarion. Thane Toren made many important trade connections, allowing Golushkin to export its substantial annual production of iron, nickel, copper, silver, and tin beyond Brevoy. This position would bring the family great wealth and prestige within their small community, and brought the thanks of the Clan-Chief. Volken Magrar was a close friend and companion of the most recent Clan-Chief during his youth, and his wife, Yuri's mother, was the daughter of the Clan-Chief, further strengthening their ties.
Yuri had many siblings growing up, and he was close with all of them, but his closest relationships in his youth were to his sisters Tarna and Ingra. His elder brother Gari spent most of Yuri's youth serving in armies in Brevoy and elsewhere at his father's wishes, hardening his fighting and leadership skills for when he would have, had things gone differently, one day led their family and served the Clan-Chief as a strong vassal. Tarna was Yuri's constant companion at the temple of Torag, although her dedication to the god was greater than any other their family, while Ingra, never as intellectual or wise as her siblings, followed the two constantly like a shadow, and managed to pick up a few things along the way in regard to both divine and arcane magic. Yuri had a sharp wit that his sisters enjoyed, and both he and Tarna were always highly protective of Ingra. Yuri was a precocious youth. At Golushkin, both divine magic-users and arcane ones (few as they were) gathered at the Torag's temple, and it was there that Yuri spent most of his youth, learning everything from weaponsmithing to spellcraft. Soon his knowledge surpassed that of his teachers, and in 4651 AR he left Golushkin, traveling to Tar-Kazmukh in the Five Kings Mountains to continue his education at the famous arcane library there among the Blue Warders. He studied there until 4691 AR, and still prefers to wear the simple blue robes and cap of the Tar-Kazmukh librarians whenever he can, as opposed to the noble outfit his station now sometimes requires. In 4691 AR, Yuri joined an adventuring group bound for Numeria to seek out an ancient dwarven stronghold, said to predate the Rain of Stars. He was a natural leader, and gravitated towards command positions in most groups he worked with; he was known for being occasionally harsh, but always fair. He never found the stronghold, and many of his companions died over their eight year stint exploring the strange ruins found in that nation, though he did gain a great deal of adventuring experience, as well as wealth during his travels. It was during this time that he developed a strong respect for the goddess Brigh, until he came to consider himself a follower of both she and Torag. In 4699 AR, during a stop off in Hajoth Hakados for supplies, Yuri received word of the Vanishing. It was not until he returned to New Stetven that he learned of the full extent of the disaster: not only had House Rogarvia of Brevoy disappeared utterly, but Golushkin Hold was incommunicado as well. Yuri spent the next nine years making attempts to contact or break through to Golushkin, largely with the support and funding of his cousin on his mother's side, Toval Golka, the ward of Lord Howland Garress, but even with Yuri's considerable mastery of conjuration magic and his cousin's money, he met with no success. By 4709 AR, funds for and interest in the project were running out for everyone save Yuri. Driven half-mad by his failed attempts to contact what remained of his family, he was contacted with tragic news by his sister Ingra via letter from Tar-Kazmukh (she had met and married a merchant from that city when she was visiting her brother at the library years before, and moved there long before the Vanishing). Their sister Tarna was dead, slain by orcs while adventuring near the Worldwound. Yuri was taken aback by the news, as he had been so focused on his missing family that he had completely disregarded those of his family who remained alive in the world. Tarna's body had been recovered by her companions, and apparently she had asked to be returned to Golushkin if she died. Funerary arrangements were made, and she was to be buried in a cairn in foothills of the Golushkin Mountains. Yuri expected his sister Ingra and her husband to attend the funeral, but he was surprised at the sight of ten other dwarves, all that remained of the Magrar family, all in attendance. His uncle, one of his brothers, and many other members of his family had for various reasons been away from Golushkin during the Vanishing, and now they had all come to pay their respects. Yuri made a sudden decision the night before the funeral, and rode for Highdelve, where he roused a cleric and brought him back to the foothills. Instead of a funeral, there was a raising of the dead, as Yuri spent the bulk of his family's remaining gold to bring Tarna back to life. It was on that day that Angrod, Yuri's uncle, declared before all that Yuri should lead the family until such time as his father or brother were found. Yuri seemed a changed dwarf, accepted his new position, and promised to lead his family to a new home, from which they could plan their efforts to someday learn the mystery of the Vanishing. Originally intending to perhaps establish a stronghold in Numeria somewhere, when Yuri heard of Chalm Surtova's proclamation he saw a great opportunity for his family. He determined to lead his small band, along with their herd of ponies, to Restov, to seek a position under the new charter. He did not know what their future held in the River Kingdoms, but at least Yuri knew that whatever happened, his family would be there. For Yuri, after all that had happened, that was enough. ------------------------------ "Magrar Family Tree" Toren Magrar (4448-4650**) married Polga Ulvanark of Janderhoff (4451-4650**) and had two sons: Volken (4522-4699*) and Angrod Magrar (4530). Ingra Magrar married Azagnar Davaast (4590), a merchant from Tar-Kazmukh, and had two children: Volken (4666) and Azala Davaast (4669). *- Disappeared during the events of 4699 AR, when all communication from the outside with Golushkin Hold ceased.
------------------------------ Appearance Yuri is fairly tall for a dwarf, at 4'4”, but he is not as stocky as most dwarves at only 140 pounds. He has thick black hair that he pins behind his head in a ponytail, and a long but well-kept black beard. Since his promotion to leadership of his family he often wears the clothing of a dwarven noble, with black velvet and red silk robes lined in gold trim, along with numerous rings and other jewelry, but he much prefers the simple blue robes of the Blue Warders of Tar-Kazmukh. He is never seen without his crossbow, a weapon he forged in his youth, and he typically also carries his adamantine heavy pick. Personality Adventurous, stubborn, rational, absent-minded, lonely, industrious, sarcastic, restless, impatient, eccentric.
