Appearance Spoiler:
Tierney is of average height, slim build and has chalky white skin with an unhealthy, flaky appearance. Extremely close inspection reveals that his skin is made up of tiny scales much like those of a lizard but it has a rubbery texture all the same. When Tierney speaks or tries to demonstrate expression his face does not move as one would expect, it seems almost mask-like in its stillness. This makes it difficult for him to convey feeling and for observers to interpret his intent. The overall effect is to make others uncomfortable in his presence.
He wears his black hair long to conceal his pointed ears and the rough protrusions near his temples. Whenever possible, he wears a hood or soft leather hat for the same purpose. The sclera of his eyes are dark gray and almost completely conceal his irises and pupils. If he were to remove his ever-present gloves it would show that his fingers have no nails. Worse, he has two sets of teeth; the first appear perfectly white and straight; Tierney can withdraw this set to show the unmatched jagged and yellowed teeth behind them. These second teeth often fall out and are replaced in a day with an unfailingly sharp but otherwise randomly featured tooth.
Personality Spoiler:
Tierney appears detached and isolated for the most part. He seems vaguely uninterested in his surroundings and is typically quiet but he will make clumsy attempts to ingratiate himself to others at times. Outlook on the world: Spoiler:
Tierney is somewhat self-centered in his belief that he can only depend on himself now that Lorenxo is dead. To his way of thinking the world is a dangerous place and those who let their guards down deserve their fates. Somewhat paradoxically, Tierney prefers the open dangers of Sharn to the less obvious threats elsewhere. He believes that living in another environment might lead him to relax himself too much. Eberron Bio Spoiler:
Tierney and his twin brother were the last of four children born to a woodsman and his wife who were refugees during the Last War. He was a sickly child and his parents feared that he would die in infancy as their other two children had. In fact, when food was scarce they debated if it was worth it to feed him as much as his brother. Both his mother and father hardened themselves to the possibility that Tierney would die at any time and, as a result, they were distant and showed little affection to him. Tierney, in turn, felt no attachment to them.
When Tierney was nine years old he took to the sickbed again. This last illness was supernatural; it took the nails from his fingers and the color from his skin. When his fever soared it would often bring darkness inside the family tent. His mother fled from his bedside until Tierney's father returned. They came to believes that the boy was possessed and ultimately cast him out. Tierney survived in the lanes between the tents of the encampment and often attempted to gain his family's acceptance again simply for shelter but he was rebuffed each time. It is likely that he would not have survived the coming winter if he had not been discovered by a fellow refugee named Lorenxo Uade. Lorenxo was a Brelish swordsman who marched into New Cyre with a displaced mass of refugees. When he found Tierney wandering the encampment he entreated Tierney's parents to give the boy over to his care and they were only too happy to be relieved of their unwanted son. However, Lorenxo revealed to Tierney that he more than just a swordsman; he was a magus, a learned man who had traveled far and seen much in his life. He recognized Tierney as a tiefling and saw great potential in him as an apprentice. Lorenxo was old and sick as a result of combat in the Last War, where he barely survived a cursed magical gas attack, and wanted to pass on his craft but had no son to whom he could teach. Tierney became a son to Lorenxo and studied magic and swordplay at his side for many years. His health was bolstered by care for the first time and his mind and limbs developed marvelously. Yet despite his great intellect, Tierney could not fathom the deeper intricacies of the magical arts as Lorenxo had hoped. And where his father wielded myriad weapons expertly, Tierney was only able to truly master the wakizashi out of all the arms that Lorenxo schooled him in. Sadly, as Tierney grew to be a strong man, Lorenxo grew sicker with each passing season. Curatives, poultices and healing magics only offered temporary respite for the old man. Tierney spent the last summer at the side of his father's sickbed in the city of Sharn, where Lorenxo had come to study the stories coming out of Cyre about the Day of Mourning. Lorenxo bequeathed to Tierney what little he had left after paying the healers who had attended to him at the end. When Lorenxo died Tierney was left with no family and no objective goals. For the past several weeks he has worked as a bodyguard to Jurgens, a magician acquaintance of his father who also studies the tales of the Mournland. However, Jurgens became disillusioned by the lack of verifiable information on the tragedy and by the inquisitors of the Silver Flame interfering with his work and has decided to leave Sharn.
