Path: Trickster
Yeah, Archmage was probably the easy choice to make, but as a mortal with access to information like Nethys has, and godly powers, how could anyone NOT be some kind of Trickster? Plus Tricksters get access to Path Dabbling, which is very Nethys, AND Tam's background of getting by on things other than magic lends itself well here, I think.

Background:

"Tam Devlin was born into a family, and indeed a dynasty, of powerful wizards. Worshipers of Nethys as far back as anyone can remember, the Devlin family made it a point to add only seasoned and proven spellcasters into their ranks. In kind, the children born into the Devlin family were unquestionably trained in spellcraft from an early age, and even the least talented rose to prominent and well respected positions within the Temples and Universities they called home.

For that reason, Tam was quite a surprise, and at first at least, a disappointment. When he came of age and began, as his father before him, to be taught the way of magic, nothing seemed to stick. Try as he might, and the boy proved to be clever indeed, he couldn't coax a single spell from the air. His forms were perfect, his syllables precise, and yet-- nothing. To his parents credit, they worked to never let Tam feel ""less"" than his cousins, who'd begun succeeding at the tasks Tam himself couldn't accomplish. That said, he yearned to be able to cast as his family did, and he spent much of his time in the Temper, praying to Nethys for a boon.

That, he knew, was a waste of time, even though it did make him feel better. The clerics of Nethys were well proud of the fact that their god didn't send visions, so Tam knew he'd not get an answer to his questions. Determined to be some sort of productive to his family, not all of whom were so good at hiding their shame as his parents were, Tam worked hard to succeed as a mundane student at the University. He learned what he could, focusing on the mechanics of spellcraft, even as he couldn't work magic himself. He learned of magic creatures and rituals, fully expecting never to see them in person. He even took up the quarterstaff in an effort to gain closeness to his god, and truth be told, he developed quite the talent. The staff brought him a great deal of joy.

An opportunity presented itself, a year into his advanced studies, and Tam found himself attached to an archaeological crew, setting out to investigate previously undiscovered ruins. For some reason, the priests and mages had been unable to scry on the area, and this unsettled the casters to no small extent. Chosen for both his knowledge of the arcane, his talent with a weapon, and his willingness to go where magic wouldn't be a help, Tam joyfully signed on to the expedition. Unbeknownst to him, some of the powers that be considered him a more expendable sage than any of the sage-mages.

Tam's adventure had started off casually enough. He proved his worth decoding puzzles, and defending the group from all manner of temple defenders. The gear he'd outfitted himself with-- a long overdue family inheritance from his point of view, had proved invaluable. And yet, two months into the expedition, Tam found havoc. While helping shift some rubble that had closed off a path, a quick cave-in left Tam separated from his party. Trapped in the darkness, Tam was forced to blindly try and find a path around. He did not succeed in that, but he did find something...

As he trailed a hand on a wall, cleverly hoping to be able to find his way back to where he started, Tam suddenly felt the ground disappear underneath him, and he fell into nothing. Tam fell for what seemed like hours, and he tumbled as he tumbled blindly, he called out to his God. Eventually, miraculously, Nethys answered. Tam suddenly found him self in a brightly lit cavern, no longer spinning or falling, and his eyes were perfectly adjusted. In fact, his sight was better, different, than before. Looking around the cavern, he saw strange auras coming from the piles of goods and gold scattered throughout the cave. Looking down at himself, he saw similar auras coming from his own gear. He was seeing magical auras! This was incredible! Looking around the cave, he noticed one item more incredible than all the others: a simple wooden staff sitting of a pedestal in the corner of the room. Was it a sign? A gift? Abandoning all the other treasures for the moment, Tam moved to the staff and picked it up. As he touched it, he felt a jolt, and he screamed!

He was falling throught the chasm again, though this time it was lit, and he was falling UP! As he did, his mind was filled to the brim with magical knowledge, and he felt his very soul being touched by SOMETHING. Nethys? Whatever it was, he felt comfortable and safe-- relatively safe anyway. As he reached the top of the chasm and set foot back on solid stone, he watched the chasm itself finally disappear. He was back in the darkness, back alone and lost. But this time was different. Staff still in hand, he snapped his fingers instinctively, and LIGHT came into being. Oh yes, he thought. This was good. This was very good.

With his newfound magic at his disposal, Tam rejoined the group in short order, and told of what he'd found. They spent the rest of their expedition in search of the cave, but never managed to find it. They left the ruins on schedule, having learned and looted much, but never having found Tam's mysterious cave.

Upon returning home, Tam was studied and studied by the most powerful and wizened sages at Nethys' Temple. No one could find any explaination but the one that Tam presented to be plausible, and so it was taken to be true. Given a small amount of time and practice, Tam soon found himself among the more powerful in his family, and quickly rose to prominence. He was no wizard, sure but his powers as a sorcerer were undisputed, and gifts from Nethys were not to be shunned."

Appearance & Details:

Tam is tall, well-built, and handsome, with moderately long brown hair and glowing blue eyes- testament to his Arcane Sight. He's covered the left half of his face in a swirling, beautifully complex pattern of tattoos, copying his God's most common depiction. He's always seen with staff in hand, and clothed in fashionable robes fitting a respected man of his station.

Tam isn't afraid of much, but he's generally worried about NOT knowing things; he can get anxious and over think things if he's particularly stressed.
