Description:
Spoiler:

A slight, wiry man, Sal does not present an imposing physical presence. His mop of flame red hair and scruffy beard are his most distinguishing features, with his mixed heritage giving otherwise less defined characteristics than those of his Keleshite peers.

Personality:

Spoiler:

Quick to listen and slow to judge, Sal tries his best to help people understand each other's viewpoints.
In light of his own sins, and following the path of the Dawnflower, Sal will abide most characters if he can see an ember of good to be kindled. However, those who show no remorse provoke a burning anger in him, acting as an external focus for his own guilt.
Because of his own mistakes, Sal is careful not to judge others too rashly. However, this caution can cause problems, leading him to delay action longer than is prudent. A particularly serious but ambiguous case might very well lead to Sal being nearly paralyzed with indecision.

Backstory, Short version:
Spoiler:

Salman grew up in Qadira, son of an Andoren merchant and a local woman. He went to study at the church of Sarenrae but had difficulty finding purpose. He didn't have the charm, grace or divine bond to be a Paladin, cleric or dervish. He was encouraged to train as an inquisitor and mentored by Nizar Karim, head of the local inquisition. Frustrated at the slow progress Nizar permitted, Salman took the opportunity offered by Haroun Samara, the local church patriarch, to begin a secret investigation. Blinded by his arrogance, Salman unintentionally exposed an anti-slavery ring, resulting in Nizar and several slaves being executed. Seeing Salman's sickening guilt at this, Haroun dispatched him to the north on the pretext of investigating the strange goings-on in Ustalav. Clear that this was an assignment without end, Salman has spent a number of months hunting demons and other corrupting evils. It was during one of these hunts that Salman had an encounter with a Sinspawn which drew the attention of Professor Lorrimor.

Backstory, Long version:
Spoiler:

Born in Katheer to a comfortably off family, Salman had a stable upbringing and solid education. Salman's father was an Andoren merchant who fell in love with a Qadiran woman while trading in Katheer. They settled in her home city and raised a family. Salman grew up in Katherr, but travelled back to Andoran with his father a few times to visit friends and family and grew to admire the freedom seen there. His father's fierce political views on slavery and equality no doubt also played a part.

Though his father tried to encourage him into politics, Salman's lack of natural charm and status as son of a foreigner made that impossible. After a good general education Salman instead became attached to the church of Sarenrae as an apprentice. Salman learnt the non-magical healing arts and begun on the path to becoming a cleric. He learnt the prayers, performed the ceremonies and tried his best to study hard the subjects at hand. He even practised the dance of the Dawnflower with the Dervishes, but lacked the natural grace to reach beyond the mechanics of the performance to the emotion at its heart. Despite his efforts, he did not develop the deep personal bond with the goddess of his peers and his progress faltered. His mind left unsatisfied, he found distraction in solving the puzzles put in front of him whilst working as an assistant to the healers.

One such investigation, finding the common cause of sickness of a number of seemingly unrelated people, drew the attention of Nizar Karim the local head of the church inquisition. Salman began training as an inquisitor.

Pleased to finally be putting his mind to work and promised a life of demon hunting and rooting out corruption, Salman took to the training with relish. Over a number of years Salman learnt the arts of an investigator: learning to recognise and understand the languages of evil creatures, studying the methods of cultists and witches, training to read the subtle hints of deception in a speaker's voice and learning the basic styles of Qadiran combat. Salman enjoyed his training but became frustrated with the slow pace his master permitted. After assisting with various mundane investigations (priests with light fingers, rebellious teenagers claiming to be cult-members...) he was approached by Haroun Samara the patriarch of the church in Katheer. Haroun congratulated Salman on his progress and asked him if he was ready to undertake a difficult investigation into true corruption of the church. Swollen with pride and pleased to finally be recognised with an investigation of his own, Salman agreed. Haroun told him of graves concerns about Nizar and Salman was put to work trying to find proof of his master's corruption.

Salman followed his master discretely in the evenings and kept a log of everyone he met. He followed him several times to a disused building in a quiet part of the city. Struggling to see through the dirt and grime on the windows Salman could only make out that a number of people were present each time. After a few hours, Nizar would emerge and head home and several other figures would leave the building and all go in different directions. Salman tried following a few of these men and women, but their destinations seemed random. Convinced he had uncovered some conspiracy, Salman returned to Haroun and laid his evidence out. Haroun reacted with glee and agreed they should interrupt one of the secret meetings and challenge those present to explain themselves.

Just a few days later Salman saw Nizar heading out for a meeting and gave the signal to Haroun. After following Nizar to the disued building Salman was met by Haroun, who had with him hard looking men in city livery. Salman, Haroun and the men entered the building and caught Nizar by surprise. About a dozen people were present, both men and women and of all ages. Three or four children could be seen, hiding behind their parents legs. It was just as Haroun smugly announced his presence to Nizar that Salman realised, with a sickening knot forming in his stomach, that these were slaves. Nizar was arrested for helping the slaves escape, and he and the slaves were put to death. Salman, distraught at what his arrogant mistake had cost, was desperate for a way to escape from himself. Haroun, realising where Salman's sympathies lay but unable to dismiss him after his "success" instead gave Salman orders to head to the north to investigate rumours of demons and corruption. Seeing the pretext, but racked with guilt and a desire to get away from reminders of his betrayal, Salman agreed. He left his family and his home, with a small sum from the church for provisions, and headed north, unsure if he would ever return.

On his journey to the north hate and guilt burnt inside him. Hate at himself for his stupidity, his mistake. And hate for Haroun for manipulating him, for betraying Nizar to further his own career. Salman has attempted to ease his guilt by providing simple healing and trying to help people understand each other. He strives to prevent petty jealousy and conceit from giving rise to any more terrible crimes. While he has been humbled and avoids judging people, Salman feels an uncontrollable and searing anger towards those who show no remorse for their crimes. In part this is because of the threat such individuals pose to the community, but also, deep down, Salman hates them for doing something he cannot, for freeing themselves from their guilt.

Salman has spent the last few months hunting demons and corruption in Ustalav. It was during this time that he encoutered a Sinspawn. He survived the fight, but it could not be called a victory. Soon after, Professor Lorrimor, without explaining how he knew of the fight, began questioning Salman about the creature. Charmed by the Professor's manner, Salman did his best to help as he could, before setting off again in search of evil to redeem, by blood if necessary.
